Right, many of you will be aware by now (through my constant pleas for help and profuse swearing at all things computer related) about my problems with the Hercules GF2 GTS Pro and motherboards. More specifically, the voltages.
Basically, I had a KT7-RAID, which couldn't supply enough voltage to the GF to initalise every time on a cold boot. After much deliberation, I was sent a brand spanking new gfx card that I was assured would work.... and didn't.
Fine, I thought, just replace the mobo now :) Surely there will be no voltage problem then.
So, off I go to OcUKs little shed in Stoke, KT7RAID sitting under me arm, pop in, say hello, have a nosey, watch some underage wench pour drinks for the staff through the window.
Hello! says the nice friendly sales dood.
Yadda yadda. I say, look I bought this, and shove my original invoice into his ears. Oh yeah, he says, those are incompatible. I give him the KT7, and he pops round back and gets me my Asus A7V 133 to replace it. Great, I think :D Before I go: So, this will be compatible then? :)
'Yes' he assures me. I was happy, not least because I had a nosey in their office :E
So then I go home, plug it all in.....
Switch it on.....
And......
IT DOES EXACTLY THE SAME BLOODY THING!!!
Yes, its the same prob, as my other gfx card works fine on the Asus. Boots up perfectly.
Therefore I am thoroughly fed up now :) Or should that be :(
Must get the knack of working up a nice large ammount of anger for a change :)
Why, oh why, oh why doesn't it work? For the love of god, all I wanted to do was play games, is that too much to ask?
So, I am thoroughly fed up. I'm going to send the GF2 back and prolly get a different card. Of which I am not sure. The radeon looks to be the only good card to buy atm.
Its just not fair dammit, I've had this thing since last November, and all I've seen is some nice 16 colour BIOS screens (at best).
Anyway, when booting, after 30 secs or so it starts making an alternating high-low beep. Any idea what this beep means? (not mention in manual)
Not that its much matter though.
Though of course, I always look on the bright side of everything, which is I managed to spot an Everglide and add it to the bill :)
Which is spinkee. Its all hard and rough :D
Ah well, what yer gonna do, eh?
Oh yeah, I'm not feeling very well today either *sniff*

Not that this helps solve you problem but I run a GF2 on the older Asus K7V mobo.
Maybe you're just an unlucky sod.
Who knows?

could this be a power supply problem ?
I run a GF2 on my A7V133 without any problems,it may well be summat else m8....power supply as said above? have you got a quality one with plenty of wattage?I use an enermax 550w and as said all is hunky dorey.

I have a Macron 300W PSU. Surely thats enough to run a floppy drive, hd, mobo and gfx card? :{
I've heard going for 450 watt eliminates all problems like this, but what if it doesn't?
I'm sick of spending money on workarounds for something that should've worked in the first place :(
Ok I really really really........REALLY dont think its a voltage problem, the asus A7V133 doesnt have any issues with anything, the whores of the mobo world you may say(they take anything;)).
It maybe worth investing in a slightly more expensive psu m8 :/even if its the same wattage! I know its harsh spending alot of dough on a psu but they are more expensive for a reason.I think I remember reading somewhere about cheaper psu not giving a constant flow of power and causing problems especially with amd cpu's,hhmm although macron are approved by AMD so that kinda rules that out...
um possibly just a faulty grfx card?..must be cause it sure wont be the mobo.
Let me know what happens I'd like to know what it turns out to be now :)
I'll put my money on PSU or fu><0red grfx card.

The gfx card has been replaced once already, plus the fact it works fine in my other poot (which has a 230 watt PSU!).
It does draw power, as it struggles to get going (I see vertical flashes on my screen as it tries initialize). Then it gives up. It does send out a signal, as sometimes the monitor keeps switching between the 'green' signal mode and the 'orange' no signal mode in 1 sec intervals. Occasionaly (1 time in 20 like), it flickers, struggles, and actually goes, and runs with no probs afterwards.
Not fair dammit. /me stamps foot angrily.

hmmmmmm that sounds more like a monitor problem
have u checked for a dodgy lead/connector, bent pins etc.
have u tried another monitor?

I suspect the power supply.
My 200W supply, which came with a P75, is currently being molested by:
- 30Gig HD
- GeForce2 GTS
- 8x DVD
- 12x10x30 CD-RW
- K62-550
- 128Mb RAM (at CAS 2)
- NIC card
The last straw was my SB!Live 5.1, which I added today...now when I try to use the CD-Drive and Hard Drive at the same time...it freezes untill I eject the CD.
Hey, no one laugh at my K62!!!!
/me laughs at ghost trayns K62

Yeah
Upgrade your Mobo and chip, theres some nice spec stuff there being severely held back, especially your GeForce GTS
K6-2....................
that wont load up your porn very quickly will it!

Noooo, don't mock the k6-2...one day your chip'll be in the same boat!
Well, I've ordered some new stuff from OCUK, should have it tommorrow.
New Beast is:
- Tornado case w/300W PS...they wouldn't swap it for an Enermax 330W
- A7V133, Tbird 850, Fop 32
Getting there 'cept the 850TB, Calz/Wiija I think you've claimed to owning the new 1.2TB? Is it the rev.c/ver.c?
On thing I'm confussed about, the previous KT133 had a 133 bus...but now it's being said the KT133A has a 133 bus??? what? but specs say it's 200/266 bus? Hmmmm? what?
I suspect the KT133 had a 133 FSB, but the KT133A has a 133 bus for the processor and can go upto 266 FSB...is this right?
Well, back to the 1.2TB, I plan to get one by March...
Also, heres a list of accessories I bought(they were out of Crucial, so I spent wisely on guff!):
- Thermaltake Blue Orb(For GeForce2)
- YS-Tech FD6025 (I'm going to place this over the Fop32, giving extra airflow...I hear the Fop38 blows like a gimp, too noisy, so this solution should work well)
- copper shim
- Arctic Silver & Arctic silver adhesive
- Rounded ATA-100/66 cables.
I plan to benchmark each modification and I'll post the results on Deathwish2000's site "Daveshardware".
For those interested, I'll let you know when it's done...
Oh, for 256M RAM, is it better to have a single chip, or two 128M chips? With two 128M chips, wouldn't you get better cooling? as the chips will have twice the surface area...meaning better overclocking potential...

Hey, don't hijack my thread :P
Anyway, its not the monitor, as its just the same on the other monitor I have available.
Looks like a new PSU is going to be in the works then :(

Latest news from Dabs is me chip don't get shipped till 7th February  I'm hoping it's the 'C' revision but not too worried if it isn't, most of the current TBirds will run at 266fsb anyway I've been told :)
Not too sure about the KT133A chipset but I think the latest A revision is capable of 266fsb on the chip and 133 official but on the Asus board able to go upto 160  to the ram :)
Nice other stuff listed there too :)
I'm going for the Taisol fan which should come into the country wednesday next week, it was the Taiwaneese new year or something :naughty: and aside from that me specs are pretty sh!t hot except for the GeForce2 MX which I bought as a stop gap till Nv20 hits the streets :)
-[Raven]- you might want to check on Scans today only thing daily, they sometimes do the Enermax power supplies on special, thats how I got mine :)

Sorry Rave...yet again I've gate-crashed someones else's post!
Yeah, I wanted that Taisol fan too but impatient as I am...
...any news on the NV20? If the GeForce2 Ultra costs £400+... and the NV20 comes out this year, I can't see it being priced below £500!!! and that for the 'mx'version!!!

Well I've got nothing else to do but twiddle mu thumbs whilst I wait for the Chip so might aswell hold out for the fan I want.
Theres lots of rumours about the Nv20 pricing structure but I don't see it costing that much, they'll probably do the same as the GeForce, bring out the first card and price it sensibly the maybe an Nv20 2 then maybe an Nv20 Ultra which will cost more than your two good kidneys :E
I just want to know what there going to call it, I sure as hell hope it's not Geforce 3 :(

I would think it would be called Geforce 3 as they will probably stick to the successful brand name.
Reactor critical reckons $500 for the standard 64MB version and $730 for the 128MB ultra version.
Ghost Trayn

$500........as I suspected.
$500 usually translates into £500....!
