Maybe I'm being thick I don't know. I'm new to this! I have just bought the CS retail from Gameplay. Installed it and downloaded the Wireplay browser. The problem is, I choose a game to join and click 'Join Game' then the browser disappears and a DOS screen appears on the desktop - ok you may say. It flicks through connecting to the server IP etc but then says IPX is disabled and stops saying reason:WSAENOTSOCK. I still have a connection up etc but this DOS screen remains and nothing else happens.....help? I can get onto CS servers and play games by launching them direct through the CS software and choosing from the thousands of servers but why can't I get onto your servers?
PS I also had to rename the hlds.exe to hl.exe otherwise I couldn't even join a game!
Any ideas or should I slap myself for being dense?

The Counter Strike CDs were printed with a slight mistake on them.
If you edit "sierra.inf" in your Sierra/Counter-Strike folder with Notepad or similar. Find the entry for "Patch Version=1.0.0.0.".
Change this to "Patch Version=1.1.0.4.", save the file and retry.
The server checks the version of HL that you are using to make sure it is the same as the one on the server....if there is a mis-match it doesn't allow you to connect ;(
Change the Patch Version number (as it is a multiplayer version of 1.1.0.4) and Bob's your parents sibling :E
also, make sure that you are allowed to connect to the servers you are trying to join.
cs servers 1-13 are not open to every conection type (just wireplay direct and BTinternet) whereas 13-24 are open to every connection type.
btw that message about ipx is normal, it's what it should say in the console (that dos screen... :) )
champ.

Help? I've tried that this evening, I've changed the file name and checked it etc and I'm logging onto the correct servers. It just hangs on the small DOS screen. There is some red writing in the top left of the DOS screen that flicks between 84 and 96 fps? Seems to be doing something but its not starting up a game, I've waited ages!!
Any advice gratefully rec'd?
Cheers
hi,
do you get 'connecting to server....
do you get 'precaching resources' and then a 'done' in the console. if you het the precaching resources, then all you should need to do is type 'retry' (as it's just the connection to the server that's timed out while your pc was loading all the data off your hard drive)
i must admit i am a bit concerned as to you saying a 'dos' screen comes up - it should be the console, in the cs colours and everything.
also, try connecting to an internet game using the games in built browser, launch the game (not via wireplay) and navigate the menu's to bring up the server list and try connecting to any server that way.

Now I understand what I should be seeing.....I get a simple DOS screen come up, you know if you were to open one up from Start-Programs etc. I know what you mean about the console, you get the CS picture and yellow writing on the left saying its connecting etc (seen the bruv's), I don't get that far.
I have joined another game using the CS built in browser and its ok. It looks like the Wireplay browser is not detecting the CS software?I have been into setup and detected the hl.exe but I had to rename the .exe file from hlds.exe to hl.exe for it to accept it. There is also a CS.exe, should I try re-naming that to hl.exe and see if it works?
Cheers

Right... I suggest you start everything over again.
Uninstall the Wireplay browser and Counterstrike, then reinstall Counterstrike and then WP3 (in that order). Make sure when you've installed CS that you do what Reiver Blue explained above.
See what happens. Don't rename any files or anything like that. Test it out and report back to us.
Out of curiosity why did you start renaming files in the first place?

When I first installed CS and then WP3 I tried joining a game, I had been through the registration process etc but the button for 'Join Game' greyed out. So I went to the setup tab and it appeared to be searching for the hl.exe file. When I searched for it myself I could not find it. All that was there was a hlds.exe which had the original HL Lambdaabdba?? icon and a CS.exe with a CS icon. I figured the original icon looked a good bet as it didn't work so I renamed the hlds.exe to hl.exe and search again - bingo the browser liked it and allowed me to click on the join game button, thats when all this DOS business happened.
Will do what you suggest and get back to you.....

You need to make sure that the setup is pointing at "cstrike.exe" in the Sierra/Counter-Strike folder.
You're probably running the wrong executable :naughty:

Was starting to sound that way...

So instead of the setup looking for hl.exe I need to change that to look for cstrike.exe?
Will attempt this tonight after I have uninstalled/re-installed etc as per previous....
Many Thanks for the help guys!!
Cheers.
