View Full Version : Wharfdale 750s
Is there a code to make the Wharfdale 750s multi region, or do I have to get it chipped?
I know there is a code for the 750
But not sure about the 750s
If there is & anyone knows it please would you tell me.
Thanks
Vern.

Hmm, six months ago it maybe was a good player. But since there are now a few discs that don't work on it, Toy Story bonus disc and Gladiator (2nd Disc) and people have reported dropouts in the sound using DTS I could no longer recommend it. Especially as there are 'brandname' players around for the same money. e.g. Pioneer 530 - £180.
BTW the hack for the 750s can be found here - http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/wharfedale.html#dvd750Shack
I think this bad publicity for budget players is unfair.
I have a 750S and its fine and a nice easy region hack (handles RCE with ease).
As for these problems. They are nothing to do with the makers of the player. Both Toy Story bonus disc and Gladiator Disc 2 break the standard set for DVD production. Specifically they use a TOC which exceeds the specification. This specification is well known and is agreed upon by all parties (Check uk.media.dvd for details of this). As it happens certain disc makers break this rule. But it is by no means the fault of the makers of the 750S and other budget models. The makers of Gladiator acknowledge this and have repressed a version of the disc that is compliant (not difficult since the R1 disc is compliant) as for Toy Story boxset Disney accept it is their mistake but refuse to repress instead they are offering refunds.
The larger TOC causes a problem with certain players as those players only have enough internal storage(some type of RAM) to hold a correct size TOC. An incorrect size one exceeds available memory and crashes the machine.
If the major companies thought that the TOC specification was too restrictive why didn't they push for a larger TOC in the spec instead of whinging later and just breaking the damn rule.
So don't go making the mistake Watchdog did and paint Wharfedale as a criminal because discmakers are idiots :)

I certainly take on board what you're saying clipper, but with the problems that the so called budget players are having - (OK so it's not really the players fault per se, but the models from Pioneer, Sony, Panasonic etc. do not have these problems), I would avoid buying one now. Especially, as I said above, you can get superior 'branded' players such as the Pioneer 530 (multi-region) for the same money - £180.
Points taken Bapapapa
Just a small response.... My info here isn't definitive, but there has been a "brand" player that has had this problem... i remember reading it on uk.media.dvd...
this was pointed out as an example as to why you can't blame the players.
I also think the 750S should drop in price to the 129-149 mark as that is more in keeping with its current feature set and abilities. Budget players are dropping in price and unlike other companies Wharfedale haven't dropped their prices. But on the other hand I have only good reports of Tesco customer services and Wharfedale themselves.
The pioneer does sound like a good bet admittedly...
But the 530 is only multi-region if its chipped. I for one feel uneasy about somebody chipping a new DVD player rather than one that can be easily hacked but then again I was always far too careful :)

Wharfedale DVD-750
1: Turn machine ON
2: Open Disc Tray
3: Push keys 0, 1, 2, 3 and PLAY
4: player should now be region free.
This is now confirmed as working.
Additional:
Macrovision code (I assume you enter this via the password control option)
17942
Let me know if this works and/or the correct sequence to enter it.

2. Press the Zoom button on your remote control
3. Press the A-B button on your remote control
4. Press the Up button on your remote control
5. Press the Left button on your remote control
6. Press the Down button on your remote control
7. Press the Right button on your remote control
8. The words Region Free should briefly appear on screen to confirm that the hack has been successful
To return this player to Region 2 playback only
1. Open the disc tray
2. Press the buttons 1, 1, 1, 1 and then 2 on your remote control, in order, one at at time
3. The words Region 2 should briefly appear on screen to confirm that the hack has been successful
There have been a number of reports that the Wharfedale DVD750s region hack may not work on all DVD750s players.
Try This .. THIS IS THE HACK I USED FOR MY 750
1 Press 'Step' WHICH I GOT IN NOVEMBER :)
2Press 'Prev'
3 Press 'Next'
This should set the player to multi-region.
If you need to go back to Region 2
1 Press 'Slow'
2 Press 'Prev'
3 Press 'Next'
In case the wording is different on your handset, STEP is also sometimes called PAUSE, try that it might work :-)
There is now an updated 750 as well as the 750s.
The updated 750 has a new DTS logo on the front of the player
The 750s player and box has 750(S) on it.
The updated 750 uses the same hack as the old one.
It`s even better now as it is only £99.99 from Tesco. Hurry stocks are limited and they will be getting no more. Just bought mine. There were about 40 left in Kingston Park, Newcastle when I left 2 hours ago.

Anybody know if that macro code works?
And can you get R1 ntsc discs to output in pal?
Cheers BOZZDUDE:smokin::bandit:
I can answer one of those...
It will output R1 NTSC discs in either NTSC, PAL60 or PAL50 (normal PAL)
Please note tho' that PAL50 has the usual 3:2 pulldown problem and the display judders quite noticeably.
Most TV's these days can handle 60hz and PAL60 is rock solid and a very nice picture.

Really could do with an answer to the Macrovision code question before Tesco run out, Bap's link suggests it doesn't have a macro hack but if anyone knows differant then post it.... please.

Ok m8 as its you :) I popped over to the site everyone says is the oracle FAQ-wise for the wharfedale machines...
http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/wharfedale.html
And it says quite categorically
"No. There is no known way of removing the Macrovision copy protection with any iteration of the DVD750 or DVD750S without resorting to a hardware/software modification. "
So there ya go... Everyone in various newsgroups quotes this FAQ every time there is a question about wharfedales so there ya have it...
Anyway you shouldn't be taping DVD's you naughty :monkee:
