i've decided to make an active effort to teach myself web-design and further into graphics...
any recommendations of (cheaper end of the spectrum) software, that is good, and will provide a useful foundation on which to build, expand knowledge, and maybe hopefully become good at something :)
Thanks in Advance :)

Yeah i know its cheap, but being as i cant afford to buy the software myself, i may as well borrow meh colleges software, staed of learning photoshop in the day and having to learn a similar program (thats free) at night
Sorry but have u seen the cost of quality products like 3DS Max / Photoshop / Anything by Macromedia / Lightwave
Thats completely beyond the reach of such as myself.
btw i didnt mean downloading it and giving the software companies nothing, that is low, i meant get a copy off a m8 or something.

join a college, even if its only a part time night course or something, most colleges will do you a student licence.
eg. I study 9 hours per week on web design and graphic art and purchased Macromedia Dreamweaver 3, Fireworks 3 and Flash 4 for £149 all in on a student licence.

also got office 2001 proffessional edition (mac) for £99.
Yes, I know I could have got it from a warez site for free but I like to have my main programs licensed as I sometimes make money from them.

ooh excellent, thankyou Lout, your final comment is precisely the reason I’d rather have licensed copies of software, than be an L337 H4X0R d00d :)
Thanks!

Being in the software industry myself I too prefer to buy the design software that I use.
It is a problem tho' about the cost ;(
So far I've shelled out for Dreamweaver and Paintshop Pro (yes I know most people prefer photoshop but for some reason I feel more comfortable with Paintshop) and am currently trying to save my little heart out for 3DS max.
I've tended to buy the software at places where you can pay over a set number of months which is a bit easier on the bank account :)

...and the difference between downloading and borrowing a copy is wat exactly? :P

Yeah, the initial shelling out is horriffic but the updates arent too bad for the Macromedia stuff.
3dMax scares the hell out of me! Had a play with it at college but got totally lost! A bit of overkill for most web graphics anyway (well thats my excuse). Bryce 4 is very cool though.
rofl saga m8 i couldnt live withou college the only legal way i can use 3dmax 3.1 hehe
they might be gettin v 4 soon so a cant bloody w8
bad thing is they dont have character studio ohh well cant have everythin that complicated :)
i work in truespace 3 se (free) at home go to college and work on 3d max 3.1 (quite alot of money)
then finsih me collages etc in photoshop :)
god i love my college shall be goin v soon in september lol on a graphics course with 3d intergrated into it :)
am goin for the diploma hehe v good stuff any1 else doin this course got tips for the interview????

Well unless you go and scope out those warez sites then your gonna be looking at around 30.000 for 3D Max r3, 400+ for a full version of the latest Photoshop, 200 (We're talking pounds here fellas) or more for Dream Weaver or any other half decent web design software.
Warez is the poormans saviour :)
