you might have a bunch of links already, but http://www.flay.com is the best going online resource for lw.

http://members.home.net/lightwavetutorials/ is also cool when it comes to general tutorials. want to play with skelegons, weight maps, whatever, go there. tbh, you can gain a fair bit of info from the manuals, but the above link is cool for finding tutorials + tips. lightwave's great, and almost half the cost of Max.

heh, i don't really have any additional lightwave books as er they're hard to find in the shops.

manuals hm yeah, well, warezing is a double edged sword for this kinda of thing, i think. I don't condone it, but i realise that it's f-ing hard getting started without the software. As a piece of advice, don't go treking into lw groups and irc channels asking for tips on things which are obviously in the manual...the answers are there in the program somewhere. I've seen what happens when people do.

Eitherway, I say credit where credit is due - if you ever make money from lightwave you should buy for it asap. newtek deserve the money, especially considering its still so much cheaper than Max, and the amazing things it does out of the box. my thoughts on the subject, anyway. learn well.

yeah i know, i am gonna buy the full thing once i got the hang of it, i dload games and buy em if i like em, like to have the actual thing, thats why i got no dosh, spent it all on new games :) oops
anyway, i have been looking at 3dstudio max too, have it installed too, and maya needs win nt or above grrrr :)
i just wanna look at all of em and see which one to go with really before i start specializing.
i know how to model a bit, stuff like that, does lightwave support autocad, i can do that my dad taught me.
just wondering if theres any info out there will buy it once its proved its worth.
cheers

lightwave can import DXF files. I started off my 3d life by importing autocad-13 files into 3ds4. You can always do the acad -> rhino -> lightwave route, too. or just rhino -> lightwave.

As for Maya, er, maybe a little bit OTT, product wise. If you're keen on doing that, then you might as well try Softimage too. Truth is that you're then left trying to get indepth with 4 v.complex products, and, er, there are only so many years in a lifetime.
