I have a neighbour who has a old caravan in his back garden where he fiddles and guddles around with his collection of very old pc's. He has one fairly modern pc, so for months now i've been encouraging him to get onto the internet, "Dont have a modem" says he "i'll give you my old 'un " says i.
And so its gone on for many months now, until last week i showed him on my own pc how easy it is to find, download and play your favourite music.
Now this guy is a devoted fan of Django Rienhart and was amazed as to how much Django music and information there was on the net..........so yesterday he finaly took the plunge and i installed my old modem on his pc and i registered him with lineone for off-peak free calls.
Last night sitting next to him was like watching a kid with a new train set, the smile was beaming from ear to ear, and the highlight was finding his own village website and an old picture of a past flame standing at the local bridge in the late 1930's.
When i went to bed just before midnight "old Phils" caravan light was still burning......what have i started ...:naughty:
"Old Phil" BTW will be 80 next year, do you know any older surfers:)

Gahh didn't know that, I trained with him when he took it up, can't remember his name or his Guide initials as I didn't do it for long because of work commitments plus it was a long time ago, cracking bloke  have to dig out my old buddy lists and try and remember now :(

I keep trying to persude my dad (77) to get a PC and connect to the internet. He flew spitfires and hurricanes in the latter part of WW2, and I'm sure he'd love a game of AA. He is extremely tecnophobic though ;(.
I let him have a go on my PC once, but he just froze and panicked and said it wasnt for him.

Fair enough I suppose, but a shame.

I can picture the scene.

Redkite leaves the caravan, Old Phil rubs his hands together and shouts "RIGHT WHERE'S THE PORN!"

Yeah I'm 99% sure it was BB and iirc rn was Brian. He was a well funny bloke, a real character. Come to think about it, I believe most of that batch were over twice my age at the time

I wouldn't bother trying again m8, was quite hard to keep up with other online activities as well as guiding. Minimum of 2 x 3 hour shifts a week, with 60 odd other people trying for the easy shifts (mine were either the busiest times, pub chuck out times or 3a.m. shifts :() and when you gotta work 10 hours a day as well, can be really tiring :)
Mind, that was quite a few years ago, may have changed a bit now :)

Haven't been in chat rooms in years, reminds me too much of near breakdowns in AOL chatrooms, was fun for a while though

Bluejam yer not far wrong m8  i've been backwards and forwards all day trying to show old phil the email side of things, and its been a real hoot.
But the latest news is that he's currently banned from going online by his missus cos she missed incoming calls last night from friends and family (they only have one line)
So........not to be deterred, i'm going to download Lineone Call Manager from http://www.ocmuk.com/ and hope that i can resolve that problem for him.
Has anyone any experience of Lineone call manager, which says it can divert calls to a voicebox or even take the call whilst staying online.

Sad news here guys, yesterday i spent some time with Old Phil installing MS messenger, so that he could message me when we were both online. He eventualy got the hang of it and returned a few humourous messages early yesterday afternoon.
Last night about 6.30 i wandered down through his garden with a friend (who ironicaly is an AA player) to visit him and as Phils caravan light was out we assumed he was in his house, but as we passed the caravan we heard moaning, and after opening the door of the caravan found Old Phil sitting slumped in his chair having suffered a stroke. He'd lost the use of his left leg and his left arm, and clearly his speech was impaired. He could'nt even reach the phone next to his pc, or switch the light on, and had been sitting there since 4pm fully aware of what had happened to him.
He's now in hospital and the latest news is he's comfortable.
I'm gutted, but thats the sad reality of life for you.
I dunno yet whether he's going to make it but if anyone feels minded to email him then old Phil's addy which i set up for him is oldphil78@hotmail.com

AOL Chat was my life for a good two years Samson

I actually counted down the days from my 17th birthday until I was the minimum age to be a Guide, hmph! Got accepted first time etc, over the moon, couldn't keep my mouth shut, told a Guide who i thought was a friend, who in turn, opened their mouth, hey presto! Thrown out of the guide program and banned for a year, pfffffffft.

To be honest, i've hardly chatted since, feel like such a stranger sometimes. I loved being able to help others with both AOL related stuff and anything else that cropped up, Guiding would've been perfect. I was set to become the youngest AOL UK Guide (apparently they don't usually consider anyone under 21 ish?), and I blew it  Gutted didn't even come close.

Kitey, so sorry to hear about Phil, I'll mail him later and say hi, we can't let something like this come between him and the internet, we need to sort his priorities!
