Hi,

I have just got an Hitachi 505 dvd player, which I have upgraded to multi-region using the instructions here:

http://home.swipnet.se/moosenose2/dv-p505.html

can anyone tell me if a RCE dvd will now work on this player? I know little about RCE and what methods it uses but what I do know is that it stops RCE encoded discs from even playing on multi-region player. Will someone be kind enough to explain to me how all this works and if my player will work.

Thanks

Kev

The last line on that page says: "Now the region coding is removed.", which probably means it's been set to region 0 - i.e., you may have problems with RCE discs.

Have a look at http://www.techtronics.com/ttn/shop/510-rce.html and http://www.flexion.org/video/DVDLingo/RCE/ which should tell you all you need to know about RCE.

Regards
Marty

But this is never certain...

I hacked my Wharfedale 750S using the region free handset hack (there is a specific region hack but I didn't use it). So when I got an RCE disc I expected to have to switch region manually. Popped disc in and it worked perfectly on region free mode so its all a bit of a mystery quite honestly...

Best thing to do is borrow an RCE disc from a friend or buy from somewhere with noquibble returns policy

I dont know anyone else that has a region 1 player or any RCE discs and i really cant be arsed with all the hassle of refunds and the like. But not to worry, I'll just wait until a title is released over here if the R1 version is RCE, I don't want to wait 7 to 26 days for an expensive doorstop if it doesn't work :) Meanwhile, there are plenty of R1 titles to keep me satisfied while I wait.

(I'll just disappear now to order Gone In 60 Seconds & Usual Suspects :E )

Gone In Sixty Seconds??

Now that is an expensive doorstop. :D

The film is :pants:

It doesn't matter anyway, my (friends) card has reached its limit, I'll have to wait another few weeks before i buy that very entertaining doorstop :)

Oh well, back to English sites where I can use my trusty old Solo card! (I wouldn't consider Scarface a doorstop though)

Hi!

Ive sorted it out now: There was a hack I was given before which I was told would M/R my player by enetering a menu screen which displayed the meassage 'YOU SHOULD NOT BE HERE', and had various settings, and from this menu you could change the region manually.

So I tried this hack and it did take me to the aforementioned menu, but I could not alter any of the settings and there wasnt even a mention of changing region.

So anyway, I tried a different method of hacking, (the one I posted a link to above), and this worked, but I wasnt sure if RCE discs would work which is why I started this thread in the first place, but once my player was upgraded I no longer needed to use the remote hack. But just this morning I was messing with my player and just decided to try the remote hack for no particular reason, and when I got there, there was an extra menu which allowed me to manually change region anytime I want.

So I know that if I set it to R1 rather than just ALL REGION an RCE DVD will now work in my player.

After all that highly useless information :) What does everyone think of Hollow Man, and what other RCE titles are there that are A)Top quality films and B)Not yet available over here?

And thanks for any previous help offered everyone :)

Well as far as I know of 2 RCE discs

The Patriot ... I ain't seen it cos I don't usually go in for this fictional History type film...

Hollow Man... I like it and its a damned good disc... very good effects. Storyline good but flawed. I am a fan of Verhoevens genre work so I tend to give him benefit of doubt. It is his weakest genre film but I think its alot of fun in brain-in-neutral mode.

I think Im going to go for Hollow Man, The Patriot is already out over here and I've seen it anyway (I would recommend it wether or not you go for this genre), There is The Perfect Storm but that too is already available here, I'm mainly after films that are only currently R1 because of the exclusivity of owning it before any of my mates, and now I think about it I dont really mind wether it is RCE or not. I have a list which I'm currently looking at and deciding which ones I may or may not get:

Gone In 60 Seconds
Shaft
The Usual Suspects (A Definate Yes)
Pitch Black: Unrated
Me, Myself and Irene
The Cell
Man On The Moon
Scary Movie
Hollow Man
Road Trip: Unrated
What Lies Beneath
X-Men

Any other suggestions on a decent film anyone? Or just thoughts on these ones, feedback is appreciated.

Man On The Moon & X-Men - Definate yes. Esp. MOTM as it's my favorite film in ages. :)

The Cell is supposed to be crap and Gone In Sixty Seconds definately is crap. :pants:

The others I haven't seen. Although I've got MM&I but have yet to watch it. :{

Some other recently released R1s:

The Untouchables
Predator - DTS
The Sopranos - Series 1

And a couple of Criterion DVDs that have just gone OOP (Out Of Print), which means they will become very collectable soon:

Robocop - Special Edition
Silence Of The Lambs - Special Edition

Sopranos - Series 1, definately worth a look at least, is Series 2 available yet?

If so I will probably buy them both eventually

You lot really don't like Gone in 60 seconds do you?

I think its a quality film but then I am fan of sh1t hot cars, Nicolas Cage and Anjelina Jolie, if that is your kind of thing then I'd recommend it. This film looks good on DVD.

The disc quality is high and there are a fair amount of features on it.

If this film is crap then what the hell is X-Men.

I can definately recommend L.A Confidential, Romeo must Die and Final Destination, if you'd like to consider something different.

Out of print. Damn. I hope I can still get hold of the Robocop - special edition as I am pretty desperate for an uncut version of Robocop.
