Will fast compile in about 15 mins but havent got enough ram to full compile it, or at least I think thats the problem.
No errors at all just gets slow after about 35k on making scales.....very slow :(
any ideas on what else it could be?

u using basic or advanced compile setup?
on basic setup lighting and vis take hours and it seems like wc isnt doing anything...
specially if u got lots of water :)
if using full compile add
-bounce 0
to hlrad parameters
goes A LOT quicker

Actually, bounce calculations don't take too long, as the radiosity patches are already calculated.
I'd recommend trying a compressed vismatrix. As for lighting, not really much you can do about it. You want a good looking map, your gonna have to let it do its work.
The compile tools are heavily dependant on ram. When you run out, it uses the swapfile. But at that point, things just suddenly slow to crawl, as its not efficient enough. Thats why your limited to 65535 light patches ( :E ) otherwise the memory usage can reach 2GB
I'd say find someone on here with a monster machine, theres always someone who wouldn't mind leaving it running overnight to do it for ya. Also, compile times are based alot more on how much ram/available memory you got (your processor isn't used that much at all tbh). Something I always do on Final Compiles is to start windows in Safe Mode.

Bah, don't use WC to compile, use Cads batch files..
Heres settings.... :)
HLCSG.EXE -estimate -skyclip venice.map
HLBSP.EXE venice.map
HLVIS.EXE -estimate venice.map
HLRAD.EXE -estimate -smooth 80 -bounce 6 -extra venice.map
system is 1 Ghz Athy but only 128k ram. Might blow my wad next week (oooh eeeer) and get another 256k, been thinkin about gettin some for ages..
Bounce doesnt take much time.

Try
HLCSG.EXE -estimate -high venice.map (you don't need -skyclip in the latest version, as its enabled by default. -noskyclip is used to disable it)
HLBSP.EXE -estimate -high venice.map
HLVIS.EXE -estimate -high venice.map -full (-full is very important, its a new set of code in the latest version that has more rigourous vis checks)
HLRAD.EXE -estimate -high -smooth 80 -bounce 6 -extra venice.map -nomatrix
Nothing there that will speed it up, but -nomatrix may speed up your rad processing as it uses less memory in total, therefore you'll get further into the compile before it starts using the swapfile.
I also really recommend that you compile in Safe Mode.

Hmmm considering you've only got 128k of RAM, I have 256Mb on my PC... hehehe :P
Seeing as you're already compiling in an MS-DOS window, there's not much you can do to make it speed up, "Make Scales" will slow down/stop once you've run out of RAM.
> Find someone with more RAM than you and pay them to compile your map ;)
> Try some larger -chop values with the RAD (see ZHLT manual), that may or may not help

-estimate isnt used for HLBSP and -high is default settin anyway so you don't need em...
If I put in -full in HLvis its gonna take 30% longer which will mean 3 weeks instead of 4 :)
Ive read Zoners setup and references about 20 times before I posted, tried with full and was just a nightmare...
Oh well shoppin on monday for RAM then
