View Full Version : What games can you play ona 28.8k?
What multiplayer games can you play on a 28.8k ( such as air attack) without mega lag?
:pikachu:
Backgammon, Poker, Chess....
naughty monkees.
Pickachu you really really need a faster modem to be able to play online without to much lag.
But games that you could play are Age of Kings, warcraft2 , Total annihalation any low end RTS game.
The likes of quake , Unreal tournament etc are not reccommended as your lag will cause you major problems and youll end up hating the games.

:D
Patience? :(
You would need plenty running a 28.8. Upgrade to a 56k at least. It will be cheaper in the long run.

The reason hes asking about a 28.8 is that hes using my mobile to connect to the net :/
We used to play CS on a 56k modem but then the phone line staerted to crackle everytime it rained and BT didnt want to know about it..and now we is on the mobile :(
Sorry BuzzinHornet but if you have a BT line that is not working properly get them to sort it out. Why pay for something that isn't giving you what you are paying for, or have you had it disconnected.

Bit of a weird game that, but its fun (and free:)). Supposed to work on even the crappest of modems, runs perfect on my 56k.
Virtual Pool 3. Becuase its turn-based (obviously) gameplay almost completly uneffected by lag. Ok its pool, but its actually quite good game and its great for a nice quick relaxing and social game of snooker or over 20 different types of pool (wow ;)).
In fact any turn based game is good on a 28k such as some strategy games etc.
Hide & Seek :E
PS. Why don't you just buy a 56k modem? :)

we still got the line because as bt put it "the line is sufficient for voice usage and thats as far as our support goes"
we still got the line cos our parents are paying for it and dont use the net so they dont really notice the problem.
Psycho we already got a 56k modem :) we just need a decent phone line.
BTW the first day i got my SupraExpress 56e pro, i installed it and turned it on and clicked connect on the DUN thingy. The first thing i notice is that the dial tone only lasted like half a second...it had gone dead!
All my neighbours had lost their lines too.
When bt sorted it i tried to use the modem again and Bam the phone line went dead again for a couple of days!
So now i just use the mobile..no games tho cos CS runs with a ping of 480!!!!!

Mate that's bs, don't accept that from them. Tell them you need to use the internet as part of your job and you need it working to the standard to which you expect.
Phonelines are used more for dial ups to the net than they are for voice calls. I know this for a fact, so them fobbing you off with that line is scandalous.
You're paying for the line to connect to the net, you should be able to do just that.
And ask them if their support only goes so far as to deal with voice calls, then why do they have 3/4 different ISPs?
Also tell them the crackling is interfering with your voice calls as well, and is making it hard to hear ppl.
:)
afaik they (BT) only guarantee u can connect to the internet they DON`T guarantee at wat speed u connect:( as long as u can connect they dont wanna know, seeing as most ppl who use the internet do not play online games the slightly lower speeds wont really make that much diff to them,so BT tell u to sod off if u complain, not much u can do tbh.

I've sent a letter to bt on my parents behalf..lazy buggers! :P
It states that i am using the phone line for the net and have contacted support on more than 3 occasions with promises that engineers would pop round to see it but no one ever did. Also i popped in the old 'I'll get watchdog on ya if you start!'
:)

A simple rule of thumb would be the older the game the more likely it will be ok with a slow modem. With a 22.8 modem I guess you’re looking at more 6 years old and pre Windows 95 games, the more likely you'll be able to play it online. Have a try of Doom or even Zdoom, maybe even the original Warcraft, these may well keep you going :)
Usually more modern games like UT and Q3A need faster modems. Using GameSpy Arcade I was getting mostly pings of 1200 using my 33.6 modem for the above games (one of the main reasons why I gave up trying to play action games years ago :( ), and with that same modem if I test it’s download speeds it’s usually rated as a 14k to 28k modem. But I could still play Diablo 2 with it, with minimal lag in the Euro Realms using that modem, open games were lag nightmares though.
There are also other text based strategy and RPG games out there, some of which have a fair sized fan base. Sometimes you just have to jump in and see if it works for you.
Rumble In The Void works on that quite well

um, ut is unplayable on a 28.k modem, the lag box is almost costantly there, i should know, i used 1 for nearly a month
im getting cable very soon, cant wait :P
£80 installation
£30 a month
£150 4 modem or £20 rent per month
£5 a month for isp (24/7 assess :) )
to me that is very good!
