I've spent many hours on flight simulator games, and I'm getting the feeling that maybe it's not what I really want to do.

After all it's only looking at a picture.

Something I remember from some years back is flying the real things. Doing something and going somewhere.

Are we being deceived by our game experience, about what these things are really like ?

I don't think you can get the same satisfaction from a computer game.

True it's not easy to go flying but there are other activities out there.

Fair enough...

But given the choice between playing Counter-Strike and joining the SAS... I go for the former :)

It all depends on what flight simulator games you have been playing and what 'picture' you have been looking at. Games like Air Attack and Combat Flight Simulator requires the skill of finding the enemy and shotting them down before they do it to you and games like Flight Simulator 2000 requires one to fly a plane in near realistic conditions. I play the latter a lot and yes one can look at a 'picture' if you want to but the skill is flying using the controls and maps to fly from one place to another.

Yes you do get the technical points as you say. But I think its quite a poor representation of actual flying. I'm planning on spending less time with the computer in future now that my memory of the real world is coming back.

Surely the attraction of computer games is escapism. Being able to do things we wouldn't normally be able. How many of us will get the satisfaction of flying a real 747 or Spitfire.

Nobodys trying to deceive you into thinking what you're doing is real, games just give you the opportunity to forget about real life for a few hours and immerse yourself in something a bit different from the drudgeries of real life.

Cheers,

Chas

Hehe

Yeah I don't think trying to rocket-jump in real life holds somewhat the same thrill...

:D

There are allways the flying schools that can give an introductory lesson, for comparison.

Playing games online and LAN is really a great laugh, what i usually do is (@ collage btw) play on Lan on Tuesdays, work wednesdays (night), play Online on thursdays, work friday nights, and then go out, work saturdays and then go out.
Me and my m8's keep in touch via icq etc and we're all having a great laugh, if you enjoy what your doing then why change? if you get bored than perhaps try getting into something or starting something fresh :)
