View Full Version : dts or not??
hi all,
was watching gladiator again tyhe other day and thought i would try the dts option of the disc to compare it with dolby digital version.
my receiver (pioneer vsx609) accepts dd and dts but im buggered if it will work.
now my dvd player is the bush dvd2009 which states in the manual that it is dts compatible!
the reveiver automatically selects dol'digital and whatever appropiate downmix etc etc from the optical output of the player.
seems strange that i get no sound from dts though.
should there be an audio option on the dvd player for dts? or any other kind of choice? cos im damned if i can find one.
is this bush telling us that it has something it clearly hasnt?
any ideas/thoughts appreciated,
cheers all,
harl

Hiya m8 not too sure about your player but i was read about some players or most of erm that the pnon sockets give better sound than the optical,I know thats what i thought .
But if you want a better idea go here these forums are good for info that you need
http://www.dvd.reviewer.co.uk
hi there.
cheers for the reply kenny.
ive posted on several forums about this and the only ones that replied stated that i needed to enable thedts option within a dvd players audio setup menus.
the bush 2009 only has dd and pcm.
now this is pissing me off because even the "top" dvd magazines state that it is dts compatible.
do they actually test this? i think not.
seems a bit odd to me!
all the best,
harle.

Just out of interest, what disc are you trying?
hi m8,
ive been trying the gladiator and t2 discs (t2 is region one) multi region dvd player.
i really want to find out if i should have the option of dts within the audio set up.
ive just read what hi fi mag and it states there that the bush is not dts compatible.
grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Has your player got the little DTS logo on the front?
lo bapa'
no it hasnt m8.
i know peeps are gonna think duhhhhhh....
but my point is this:
are the magazines misinformed or misinforming us??
dvd is still a growing market and its a pain if people are getting misled.
oh well,rant over.
cheers,
harle.
(p.s talking of what hifi magazine, they have some damn good advertizers offering good deals on dvd players sometimes!)

Totally agree with you mate. I did a search for your model number on google and all the spec sheets said it was DTS compatible. Obviously some magazines are just reading spec sheets and not fully testing all the functions of all the players.
If you can prove that you were sold the player under the premise that it passed the DTS bitstream, then you can get a refund.
Although to be honest, if you can hear the difference between DTS & DD on an average home-cinema setup then you've got better ears than I have. :D

hmmmmmmmmmmmm if u have decent speaker system and an average amp u should be able to hear the dif between the 2 formats DTS is always louder and the base is stronger and deeper.....it has set off the cut off on my sub twice while watching a movie and didnt do it while watching the same movies in DD at same volume....:)
Personaly im a huge fan of DTS and will always get the dts version of a movie.heheh me a DTS:pimp:

Wellllllllllllllllllllllll, I've got a Sony 830 amp & Tannoy Revolutions all round and sure DTS maybe has a teeny tiny touch more depth and clarity and slightly improved bass extension, but it ain't worth upgrading your system specifically for that. R2 titles are pretty thin on the ground anyway, I can only think of two; Chicken Run & Gladiator.
Beleive me quin, when you finally hear DTS, you'll be wondering what all the fuss is about.

Well i have a sony 940 with accoustic mini pods and a rel 200e
and belive me there is a lot more base pushed out on DTS
the cut off dose not lie!!!!!! :)
also if u have region 1 theres stacks of titles out...just listen to saving private ryan DTS and then the dd version
it sounds quite flat in comparision....

Saving Private Ryan was encoded at the full bit-rate, so Ok I'll give you that one.
Name me some others where the difference is substantially different and worth upgrading your system for. Noting that nearly all DTS soundtracks are compressed nearly as much as DD dics now.
Incidentally, a blind test was carried out by members of the http://www.hometheatertalk.com forum with Jurrasic Park DD & JP DTS and they could not tell the difference. And believe me they use proper equipment over there, not the piddling little mid-fi stuff we are both using. You have certainly got a nice sub though, your neighbours must hate your guts. :D
I suppose DTS has got a certain placebo effect, where if you know it's DTS you 'think' it must sound 'better'.
Pro-Logic to Dolby Digital = Sell your soul to upgrade.
Dolby Digital to DTS = Maybe sell the wife to upgrade, but nothing more. :D

heheheh ok Mr B, i'm not saying its worth upgrading ya system just for a bit more base and clarity..if ya want that then get decent speakers and a sub, but i'll take the pepsi challenge with DTS and DD.
Sure when we all upgraded to DD it sounded like nothing before, but when i got my 1st dts dvd i was way impressed with the new sound i was hearing.I thought to myself , Hey how can there be that much diff in the sound hmmmmmmmmmmm so i put on bone collector which has both sound tracks and the effets have a more realistic sound to them in dts then the standard dd....and if my wife noticed the differnce then i'm sure there was one :) as she is a complete home cinema hater.
So if u have DTS and a decent set up give it a try and im sure u will be impressed...but if you are using a tiny pair of binatone speakers then the whole thing maybe lost on u.
Personaly i think dts adds a bit more grunt and a better seperation to the mix but thats only my opinion.
If ur ever in the Aylesbury area B ,pop in for a demo sometime ,always good to make a new convert hehhehehhehe:pimp:

You've hit the nail on the head m8, it's a different mix. If the DTS mix sounds 'better' than the DD mix to you, then that's all that matters.
Now what you really don't want is a STD.
Saving Private Ryan was not encoded at the full dts bitrate, but at the 768 rate - that was one of the reasons most people were so impressed as they didn't expect so much of a difference over the DD version.
Personally, I like dts and will always listen to the dts track in preference to DD given a choice, but it would never affect my buying decisions. There have been endless debates over the relative merits of DD vs dts at the Home Theatre Forum and other sites, and at the end of the day there seems to be little in it. I find the bass extension on dts titles to be better, but you won't notice this without a decent sub so if your system doesn't go so low then I doubt you'll hear a great difference.
Don't upgrade just for dts, but when your system allows you to check it out, then see what you think...
