Great game, but how on earth to get through the first combat in the expansion pack I never found out, far to hard for me. I'd rate it as much a classic as Civ.
I think possibly populous 2. I still like to go back to that every now and then. And I am still only on level 600 and something!
My favourite game has got to be Carmageddon 1. It was totally different to anything else which made it amazing. Nuthin like this had been done before and tbh the new "shock" factor was cool :)
I'm thinking Elite atm...

yeah you're right m8 (i've only been playing it for about 20 months so what would i know :rolleyes: )
team fortress classic refers to version 1016 , in other words , before the patch to 1.5 , which changed it for the worse , and just about every other half life mod afaik ;(

I agree...System Shock 1 & 2 were both an absolutely
fantastic experience - certainly every gamer's must have.
Another game fond to my heart is Heroes Of Might and Magic 3
(if anyone's even heard of it :)) - no flashy graphics,
turn-based as well but what awesome gameplay and addiction.

Ive got to admit - my fav game of all time would have to be 'x-com enemy unknown' - never has a game engrossed me as much as that thing, I loved it.
But HL+tfc+cs+all the other mods - is the only game ive put on my HDD and its stayed there since, most other games get wiped and sometimes put back on when im in the mood. But the actual game HL i only completely played through once, I just hope that a HL'esque community will grow around B&W.

A Q3 engine game developed by the ppl who gave us Kingpin, and ID software......surely this can`t fail to be one of the best FPS of 2001:)

Nah, I neglected to mention RTWC for the reason. It may have some of the latest graphics, but Red Faction will not only match them but its Geo-Mod engine will be to die for. Real life physics to every extent in an action game is just what we've always wanted - we've just never thought about it. And also the plot - "there's Nazis, kill 'em!". Not exactly brain surgey and I consider plot/narrative the most important element of an action game - hence my penchant for Deus Ex and Half-Life being the current best games out there. As I said though, GTA 3, Team Fortress 2, Red Faction and, of course, our beloved Black and White will change that.

But onto topic after a very long hard think the best game of all time for me the winner has to be Doom
Not only was it the first ever game to make me peer round the monitor when I came to corners in case something leaped out, it genuinely made me jump backwards at times! (SS2 did too but that was much much later)
ELITE had got to be the best game of all time no fooking question!!!
Aparently soon to be in production is the 4th (or is it 5th) ELITE that will be multiplayer online :) yeahhhhhh can't wait for that baby to come out!!!
Get them THARGONS coming atcha again :)
BTW annoyed as original elite runs too fast on me pc and all them slow down proggys are crap and the other 2 r completely bugged to hell!!!
All i wanna do is get atleast 1 of them 2 work!

I have to apologise to the people here :( Elite II: Frontier wasn’t the game I was actually thinking of. I owned and played that game, and the only thing it suffered from was having real physics, which were too real for space combat.
No the worst game of all time goes to Elite II : First Encounter (this is the one I should have called the bug edition (http://www.jades.org/whatsffe.htm))
Yeah FE was a disgrace, so hopefully we'll soon see a sequel worthy of the Elite name.

Elite 4 Online: Each solar system is a server, and jumpgates in each system actually lead you to another server. And all the pilots in the game are player characters played by other people. And you fly throughout systems and between them trading and fighting and running missions all the while.

Duke Nukem Forever will be the next best FPS to date. It will beat Halk Life at it's own game in my opinion. But, yeah, I agree that RTCW will be very good. Who's seen the flamethrower pic?!! :E

Not really (well yes it would be, but comparitively), look at it this way: Q3 has about 16 servers on WP alone, and about 15,000 worldwide. Even a fifth of that number worldwide and that's a lot of systems...
Oh and local systems would literally be local. Neighbouring systems would be on the same server box, and nearby systems would be run in the same country. Far off systems would be housed on servers in the US etc...

Yes but those servers are financed independently and are on 24 hours a day. You’ve read the messages in GP/WP stuff, running that sort of hardware isn’t cheap.
Coincidently the is an online mmog that is asking for volunteer mods to run their own game servers and make additions to their game world. Caeron3000 by Magique Productions. They require the volunteer to have at least two PC’s and ADSL to be a mod. Even though I have that sort of system set-up at home, there is no way I’d volunteer and lose the use of my PC’s and ADSL connection to them. WP could run such a game, but I couldn’t, would you?

One of the good things about Elite was it had so much in it’s game content for such a small amount of coding. I doubt if they would need that many servers to be honest to run an online version.
Yeah, but by running servers locally to players all over the world, you're ensuring everyone of a decent connection to play on somewhere, rather than telling everyone they all have to play on 1 server, in say the Western US (nice 600 pings all round).
And yes, I know running a server isn't cheap, but if that was the primary reason for not supplying servers, no game would ever be supported by GSPs.
Subs would cover that, but that's going beyond the scope of what's being discussed here - specifically games.

Agreed, it’s one of the banes of Internet gaming. I guess we’ll have to wait and see as to what actually happens.

I mean ELITE III First Encounters is just unplayable even with the patch...thats why they pulled it from release...*******s couldnt be botherd to fix it!
You know all it would take is some1 to take 1 of the above and convert it to mulitplayer and it would kick ass!
BTW ELITE 1 and i think ELITE II are both freeware now since Barban left....ohhhh whats his name....any way barban left after ELITE II and made them freeware and when thingy went solo and dd ELITE III he fooked it up...lol!!!
well lol now...i was extremely pissed at the time!
Anyway think it was barban wanting to do ELITE IIII as he was pissed the other chap fooked up III by himself and they both own copyright to the name so can both make games with ELITE in the title!
Anyway me wanders off to see if i can find out anything new about this!

Gametek are no more now I believe.
Mind you lessons were not learned and 3000AD was released later on. At least the programmer did his best to fix the game on his own and released it for free later on.
