Ok, perhaps one of you kindly peeps can help me with this :)

I have got my cable modem installed correctly...I think. I am running it on USB connection. The first time I plugged it in and whatnot, it detected a 'USB Composite Device' and installed the drivers on the Surfboard CD for that. It also detected two 'unknown devices' which it couldn't find any drivers for.

After fiddling around with it for a while, I cant seem to install that 'USB Composite Device' again, but it does detect the modem and setup TCP/IP configurations automatically for it. Any USB peeps out there can tell me if this is totally installed? Or am I missing something?

My second problem, is that the 'receive' light is just sitting there, flashing on and off. I have read in the users manual that this means it isnt transmitting or receiving any data, due to an apparent error. My MAC hasnt been setup with NTL yet, so I am presuming that this is why my modem hasnt set itself up properly as it states in the manual. Can anyone clarify this for me please?

Final small point is - when NTL eventually register my MAC on their computers, how will I know? Will my modem lights all go solid green as they are supposed to? Or will I be assigned an IP?

All info greatly appreciated, cheers :)

I'd say lose your USB connection all together. I've heard linking to a network card is much faster then USB.

Depending on what NTL told you, your MAC address should be registered soon. Mine was done instantly(+15 secs!).

Once registered, I think think what happens is, you turn on your PC/Modem, PC sends a signal(something to do with DHCP). If your MAC add. is registered, an IP address is given to you. then you can surf freely!

I'm lookin at my modem right now, all lights are green, except the 'Activity' which flashes when theres..... yep, you guessed it!

Thx :)

NTL have told me that their system that they use to add people's modems to the network is down atm, and will be back Tomorrow/Monday.

With regards to the network card, I think I may go buy one tomorrow. For the price of 20 quid or whatever they are, I may as well - I have also heard USB is sub standard compared to ethernet, but wanted to see for myself. Ah well! :)

Yeah definately lose the usb, it sux.
If you do get a network card remember to get some RJ45 CAT5 cable for it if you dont already have any.

Right, been out and got a nice new network card and cable. Sorted :)

OR not ;(

NTL just phoned me to say that its not their MAC registering servers that are down, its the server system itself. So, I dont think anyone in Teesside is able to use cable until tomorrow. Thats the impression I got anyways...

I live in hope :)
