View Full Version : Installing alongside windows......
Ok I've decided to use Mandrake 7.2 and was wondering how I would go about running it alongside windows.
Are there any decent guides out there? Or any willing and helpfull people?
Thanks for any help.
Well I dunno about you but I use Win2k and it pretty much owns dualbooting. From what Ive heard about mandrake its probably all covered in in the install, involving usual affair of separate partition or drive.
FOr guides Id suggest the mandrake webby looked well stocked http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/
The tricky bit is partitioning your hard drive to create a partition to install linux on. Once you've done that most distributions will happily install themselves with minimum fuss. Partition Magic is the most popular way of partitioning your hard drive though I've been having problems getting it to partition my 40 GB monstah (:naughty:) - otherwise you can use FIPS to resize your parition but it's a bit tricky, make sure you read ALL the documentation first. Look up fips on google.
heheh me recently got a 40gb aswell :D me has only used just over 3gb at moment. i'll neva fill it all.
thanks for the help. me will go and battle with me computer.

If you've only just got it all the better - get FIPS on there (you need to stick it on a floppy disk and boot from that for it to work) and resize your main partition to make space for linux. FIPS is a bit scary but you'll be fine as long as you read the documentation - then stick a linux install CD in the CD drive (set your PC to boot from the CD ROM in the bios options) and off you go ;)
you gotta b kidding, i just spent the last couple of days re-downloading everythin.
i already made a partition tho for linux, is 5gb enough? i made 3 main partitions. Windows, Linux and Other stuff. O/S's are 5gb each andd the Other section is the rest of the hard drive.
me has still to download mandrake tho :( gonna have to swipe a cd-rw from somewhere.

Mandrake 7.2 has a partitioning tool built into the setup routine and it is pretty good by the accounts that I've read. I'll be using that one when I stick it on.
