after installing a copy of Mandrake 7.2 from LINUX FORMAT mag.. i downloaded the q3a test to see how it would proform.
when i actually played it it was terrible. i had less than 1fps and i couldn't do anything with it.
some ppl say to install some GL libs or glide...
i've tried installing some mesa GL stuff but i'm not sure what its done.

i'm a bit new to linux and i cant find where to get glide from now that 3DFX have folded :(

can anyone help with the proformance and how to boost it to the level i get when using windows?

my sys specs are:
850mhz duron
3DFX voodoo 3500 TV AGP
320mb ram

also, mandrake seems to have probs with the 'make' command and './install'
so RPM files would be much better :)

thanx

Getting 3D games to work on linux is notoriously difficult - a very experienced linux techie bloke in our office borrowed my Q3 for linux CD today and couldn't get it working on his machine (I havne't even tried yet). Your best bet would probably be to seek help on a relevant linux mailing list (unless someone on here has some experience with running 3D games).

Mmmmmmm, I'm not sure what version of X you're running, but if it's the Mandrake default ( 3.something ) then its 3D support is nowhere near as good as vesion 4.0.2 -

http://xfree86.org

That has the latest releases related to X, also might have links to Voodoo drivers for it.....

Updating X for mandrake -
there's a good guide on Roys Mandrake Page ( linked on another thread. ) or I believe the Mandrake FTP has the x v.4 RPM on it somewhere

Ill sniff out roys mandrake page for ya as well and post it up :)

See under the How Tos section for his guide on upgrading the version of X for mandrake.

Cool, thanx

i've tried updating XFree86 in the past, it just screws X up :(

that guide looks helpful.... last time i didnt have the RPM files so i'll give it another go.

version of XFree86 i installed with mandrake is 4.0.1 'with hardware accelloration' or so the installer said. :/

heh, also try going on irc.openprojects.net - they have a qukae3 chan ( i think ) also, loki games might be able to help - they have a chan and finally #3dfx used to quite good as well :)

I believe there is a patch you can get from XFree86.org to patch up to X v. 4.0.3, but that this is mainly a bugfix release. Don't even know if it works well on Mandrake, but it exists :)
