View Full Version : Free Star Office CD from.......
Here (http://www.sun.co.uk/products/software/staroffice/request.html) apparently :)
Fill in the form and you get a free copy of Star Office on CD, delivered by your local Mr Postie for nothing. Musn't grumble, can't say fairer than that.....
I don't know if it works yet as i only asked for mine yesterday (it is the official Sun UK web site, so there's no real reason to doubt it). However, presuming it is, then that's a damn nice link, and a damn nice offer :)
I'll post back if/when i get mine.

Hmmm, I've been reading a bit about star office recently, and it seems like a brilliant program buuuut the thing is the software isn't "free" as it were, they still have the right to, at anytime, force you to stop using it and ask you to pay money for a license. So you don't want to become to dependant on something that can be taken away from you at any time. Now, I'm not saying this should put you off as I don't think it'd be in Sun's interest to do this being that they would lose a lot of respect amongst you sandal owners. ;)
I just though it was an interesting point... :)
Piglet...
Still it's better that someone provides software on the premise that they might ask you to pay one day, than someone who just asks you to pay up front....
Point taken though and worthwhile making.

Hmm...
There was some news some time back about Sun saying the they were going to GPL Star Office. A quick web search reveals a page that mentions a "Star Office 5.2 GPL CD", but I have no direct knowledge of the current situation.
I haven't read the SO license, so I don't really know what the terms are, but the argument can be made that it's better to pay up and have a guaranteed right to use the software than to rely on something that could be taken away and/or stupidly priced later. OTOH, you have pretty much the same situation once you're locked into using MS Office...
On Star Office itself, it's slow and rather nasty, but works for the purposes of compatabiliy. If I actually had to use an office suite on a regular basis, I'd want something else. And another job.

I'm almost certain I read somewhere that Star Office would be GLD'd very shortly as well.
Requested one myself, hope it turns up, ordered a prospectus from York which took about a month to arrive :(

Think I'm correct in saying that York is the only university in the country without an SU building?
I'm sure I read that somewhere.
Well, i received mine today in the post :) And it's a WIN95/98/2000 and Linux edition.
Even if it's not that great, it was free so can't grumble at that :doom:
