All the open source developers are doing cool free software for linux, and as a result no one seems to bother releasing anything for windows any more. It's disgraceful for example that winzip is still the standard for handling zip files despite being dodgy time limited shareware, where as linux has literally hundreds of free archive handling programs.

I want cool free software to run on my legacy OS systems dammit :( Reading Freshmeat is like reading a massive list of superb things that I can't use (I don't have access to a linux machine at home and don't get enough time to play with my linux box at work).

Stupid penguin :(

Why not set up a dual boot? Surely you can manage that :monkee:

Or "accidently" format razz's pc and install it on there...?

Ahhhh - i remember Windows ;)

Wasn't that the O/S that used to crash all the time but everyone still paid for - how weird was that.

Anyone know what happened to that Bill Gates guy ?

I've set up a dual boot on my desktop at home in Gloucestershire and it works a treat. Unfortunately the only PC I've got at home in London is a laptop and installing linux on laptops is something of a biatch (even getting the thing to boot from a CD has defeated me ;()

That's not so much the point I'm making though. The quality of free software being released for linux is incredible, while anything half decent for windows ends up as shareware.

Thats cause people want your moneh :(

Charging for open source is a non-starter due to all the alternatives you mention. You could always write stuff yourself skunk ;)

Have you tried Powerarchiver? It`s completely free and IMO quite a bit better than Winzip. Cut and pasted from its homepage:

built-in compression for ZIP(including Quake III PK3, JAR - JavaARchiver, OWK and REP files), CAB, LHA (LZH), TAR, TAR.GZ, TAR.BZ2 and BH (BlakHole), ...
built-in decompression for ZIP, CAB, LHA, RAR, ACE, ARJ, TAR, GZIP, BZIP2, ARC, ZOO, BH, ...
built-in support for XXE and UUE encoded files
multi-volume ("disk spanning") archives for ZIP, RAR, ACE, ARJ and CAB format
self-extracting archives ("sfx") for ZIP, RAR, ACE, ARJ, LHA and BH formats
