Having just watched the video commentary on the Rocky DVD I have come to realise that Stallone isnt the knucklehead I have always thought. Dont get me wrong, I have enjoyed most of his films, the Rocky and Rambo series, Cobra, Copland etc. I just never thought he was anything more than a good action star.

The story of how Rocky came to be made is truly inspirational stuff. Whilst I knew it was written by Sly, I didnt realise he was very poor, down to his last few bucks living in bedsit about to sell his dog etc etc. After getting producers interested in his script during an audition for another film he was then offerred $300,000 NOT to play Rocky in it. Now that must have been a hell of a temptation to anyone broke, but stallone stuck to his principles and insisted on the part. The whole film was shot for $950,000 and Sly also played a large part in the casting.

After hearing his story I thought good luck to the guy. He deserves his millions in Hollywood (at least as much as any of the others do anyway). He took his one chance and made a success of it. In fact, you wonder if should have spent more of his career on writing and directing and less in acting.

I hadnt watched this film for quite a few years and watching it again on DVD was really enjoyable. The grim setting is much more apparent on DVD, whilst the training montage never sounded better :) Having said that I found the picture was a little soft for a relatively young film (eg, the picture on Lawrence of Arabia is much better) suggetsting that there wasnt spent on restoring the print whcih is a shame. The sound also sounds very scratchy in places, but that could be down to the fact it was so low budget in the first place.

Overall, an excellent film and the disc has some great extras.

Did you notice his lip is always in that curved way when he's running from an exploshin in a one of his films?

From IMDB's Sylvester Stallone trivia section (though it is common knowledge, far as I know):

Birth complications, caused by forceps, resulted in paralysis of the lower left side of his face, manifested by a perennial snarl and slurred speech.

So, he's probably looking like that coming from the loo in real life as well; don't slap a disability like that, however small, on his performance as an actor (of whatever dubious quality that might be). In another bit of trivia from IMDB though:

At 15, his classmates voted him the one "most likely to end up in the electric chair."

So I guess he's lived with critics all his live :D

i feel quite bad now. cos i didnt realise sly had a disability (even if it is tiny) - but his voice always made me think he was a bit stupid. but its prolly just like that cos of his disability... :-/

i love the rocky films, and sometimes forget that:)
/me dreams of training on steps to rocky music:)

I knew about his disability, and tbh - I think he should be a role model for all those with similar problems!

Have to say that he comes over really well on the interview. Much more intelligent than his on screen appearance suggests and very down to earth.

From what I've heard, his servants went on strike once, when they were annoyed that they basically had to treat him like a king - bowing and scraping when they left the room he was currently in.

He doesn't sound so great to me, but the rags-to-riches story is quite nice.

By the way, did you know that his first film was a porn shoot called something like 'Party at Sally and Kitty's'? No? Well now you do. And, aparrently, he's anything but the Italian Stallion. :E

Don't bother watching Driven when it comes out - its a very average Indy car racing film and certainly not one of Stallone's best.

There are a couple of good moments but it doesn't save the film.

First Blood has to be his finest moment.
