travis and feeder some up average.....just ripping off other far superior bands, banal, mundane lyrics, same old stuff over and over again. not exactly awful, just so unecessary.

i would say the stereophonics were really average but they r far worse than that now.

so i agree with u really

I agree :)

I would add Robbie Williams to the list, as although I don't really hate the bloke, his tunes display a staggering lack of emotion or semblance of originality.

nah all the ppl mentioned are too crap to be average

I'd say travis are a bit above average actually. The lyrics 2 Driftwood are pretty exceptional after all.

although they may just be another rock band i do quite like Feeder's stuff sometimes.
I might add Supergrass as an average band too....

Hey Fish, long time no see, are you coming to the FuS Lan this year? :)

Details are on the FuS Forum if your interested mate

Mostly Brit Pop & Britrock bands that were classifying as average, wot about other kinds of music?

But there all I can think of 2. Can I add Reef & Cast to the list.

Hmm other kinds of music Morcheeba, Live, possibly Semisonic although closing time is ace :)

id say that travis were above average and feeder are WAAAAAAAYYYYYY below average- the lyrics to buck rogers could have been written by a monkey

average wise i would say......... badly drawn boy

I think BDB swings from astoundingly brilliant to dire. He's more inconsistent than average

Thescaryhobo
04-06-2001, 19:46
bdb does some ok stuff, some rubbish. reef and cast are excellent exampples of average bands yeah :). supergrass r quite a bit above average imo

The lyrics 2 Driftwood are pretty exceptional after all

i can't think of a song that has lyrics less exceptional than driftwood, such a tawdry metaphor (english lit. exam vocabulary still resident in memory :{)

Hmm... Average band?

I'd say Wheetus are the definition of average. Not good, not bad. Just dull.

How can Wheatus be 'average'? They're the biggest abomination this side of Toploader. While Feeder have done some dreadful stuff recently, at their best they are a quality band.

I just love the waythe metaphor is reflected in the lyric - the way the words flow across the lines. Not every lyric writer is clever enough to do that

I am gonna add to my list the scarily average Ash and Mogwai.........keep them coming!!

Thescaryhobo
05-06-2001, 23:39
ash have got really average, they were quite good once

mogwai are just fools for thinking their noisy ramblings are genuinely worthy music

How can Wheatus be 'average'? They're the biggest abomination this side of Toploader

agreed. but u gotta admit, toploader are diabolically bad. why the poodle-haired one may be the spawn of lucifer himself!

!!!!!

Im not even gonna argue that one, i dont even see how u can say REM are average!

and yeh, Ash have turned pretty average, their 1977 album showed that they could produce good music, and it scoped a nice path for their new album.......which isn't really that good :(

...I like Mogwai...

Multi million selling albums do not a good band make.

Ok i'll concur REM have made some undeniable classics and I can fully understand why they have so many fans.

But in all honesty, have they really changed since their early days? Not a great deal. Has music changed? Yes.

I also hear you say good music is good music regardless of setting. But still, they are legends in their own heads.
I really cannot see what influence they have had. That makes them average. Other bands who may not have written great songs or be good musicians have this.

That for me makes them above average.

[FuS] IAMTHEFISH
06-06-2001, 23:30
rofl :)

REM haven't changed much *wipes tear from eye*

Sorry but REM are one of the most innovative and influential mainstream bands ever. They're sound is almost totally unrecognisable from the country/punk they started off with. And as for influencing people - Do you think we'd have radiohead without REM? Not a chance, Thom Yorke reads from the book of Stipe when he writes lyrics.

Mr Soft
06-06-2001, 23:37
Innovative? How so?

Girl Gamer

Ash, Stereophonics, Travis, Feeder, Toploader & Wheatus are all in the same boat really - they can produce some catchy tunes but really they are nothing very special!

But that's just my opinion, I know they are special to some people, just not me.

I dont think REM are an average band though, I'm not a major fan but some of their songs have something special.

[FuS] IAMTHEFISH
07-06-2001, 17:28
I mean innovative in terms of their sound, which undeniably reinvents itself every few albums.

By their own admission REM are nothing more than average musicians playing at their limits but its their lack of complacency that makes them special. Every album marks a progression, where they'll pick up a new sound (mandolins, keyboards) and use that. They are incredibly gifted songwriters and Michael Stipe is the best lyricist of all-time in my book - even better than Nick Cave, Neil Hannon and Morrissey.

Just compare them to any other mainstream rock act and you'll find very few that have developed asmuch as REM have.

Thescaryhobo
07-06-2001, 18:22
i wouldn't describe morrissey as an exceptional lyricist by any means, johnny marr made the smiths imo, but i agree about cave and stipe. innovation in rem's world is not a revolution, but all their albums have something unique about them, a signature sound is it where. i can't think of a band less average than rem really. mr soft, i think u will find a great deal of rem influence in many radiohead songs, primarily in terms of lyrics. kurt cobain held rem in a high regard too, as did many such bands because rem opened the floodgates for 'alternative' rock in america after all the rubbish rock music in the 70s and early 80's.

I'd say Radiohead...they've done a couple of average tunes so they're quite "average".

BLUR AVERAGE??????????? :( I DONT THINK SO!!!!!!! They have the guts to grow and change as a band instead of re-hashing the same old tunes over again so the fans dont desert them.

They have got better and better over the past ten years, so average they are not!!

Thescaryhobo

I'd say Radiohead...they've done a couple of average tunes so they're quite "average"

radiohead don't make really make pleasant radio friendly 'tunes', there's a bit more to them than that ;)

as for blur they have got worse imo, my favourite blur song would probably be sing which is off leisure i think, parklife was a great album, great escape wasn't as bad as ppl say but the last two have been pretty mediocre except for a few good singles

-Haggis-
09-06-2001, 13:20
the thing with Blur is they release an album and you get most rubbish songs and a few really good ones. None in the middle hardly.

The Compilation Best of Blur CD was really good cause it had all their good stuff on (well most of it)

I wouldn't call Blur Average, they are better than average. But your right, each one of their albums goes slightly more downhill each time... :(
