Right, pop music is evil, right? Pure evil.
But... Some of its tunes are quite catchy, or so I think. :emb:
Pop music is sick and wrong, but does that mean that all of it is also bad? Those production values must go somewhere...
Personally, I think that Jennifer Lopez's new song, and a couple of things by S Club 7 are good fun. What do you think?
You can kill me now, I've stopped talking.

Before you can criticise pop of being evil and needing to die, you have to define it.
What counts as pop? Anything that's popular? If that's the case, how do you quantify popularity? Does it have to sell 10,000? 100,000? 1m? Or, alternatively, does it have to be a specific type of music? And where are the lines drawn between rock and pop, metal and pop, trance and pop, house and pop, uzbekhistani triangle solos and pop?
Can you write a definition that fits on a single side of A4?
Thought not.

Cool, I'm not dead. Anyway, my definition of pop is any music that is aimed at childish market, based more on image than style or needs a large marketing budget to sell the music.
Admittedly, rather vague, but that's the best I can come up with after a couple of second's thought.
Apart from 'obvious pop' like Steps, I would count in this category:
-Limp Bizkit
-Eminem
-Pied Piper/Masters of Ceremony
-Craig David
And others of their ilk.

pop = any group with at least one male member who is outrageously camp/blatant h0m0, regularly "perform" on totp/blue peter/etc, host mtv select, dont write own songs, dont sing own songs, dont perform live until liek 6 months after getting a record deal (altho in some cases recently the industry have tried to avoid this and made them perform live at the start of their "career" [a few years if theyre lucky and then nothing] - where they sounded dreadful)

Now I dont perticularly like eminem, but he has got skills,
he was actually pretty good once, and he had respect from other hip-hop artist, getting guest spots on tracks with real MC's such as Shabaam Sadeeq, Thirstin Howl III, High and Mighty, etc but , there was even a couple of tracks on his first official album that were pretty good.
But these days he has completely lost it, his lyrics used to be witty and funny, these days he's just trying to swear as much as possible and offend as many people as he can.
Even his style has changed, he trys so hard to sound angry and shouts his lyrics, to appeal to all the Limp Bizkit wannabe rebellion rocker kids.
And a duet with Elton John!! Need I say more?
Man he's lost it!

he definately has the skills, but i dont think hes gonna stay the same everytime with funny stuff as people might get bored
i got a fare few of his albums and he has many styles which shows true depth, not jsut constant(***** u gonna get shot up)etc
hes changing again for his next one to more emotional stuff,so he aint just appealin for limp fans ,plus he dissed them.lol.
but i think he still got major skills which still aint been shown,he got rap locked down right now

Well, I still don't like eminem, because he dyes his hair blonde, and now everyone in my school is doing that to make a statement about their individuality, and not realising the great irony behind this.

You what? How on earth is the colour of some1's hair ironic? Please explain, i'm not down with the kids anymore...
Pop music = popular music. If it's in the Top 40, it's pop - it's that simple. Which basically means your tainting all comercially successful music with the same brush. Let's take Tricky for example - million selling albumns (k he went a bit mental in the mid 90's) - thus his music is "sick" & "wrong"?
If you mean teenyboppy music, then i agree it's produced simply to make money. But if you had the opportunity to make a load of money in that way surely u'd take it?
there should be a age limit on pop and it should be....YOU HAVE TO BE 7 OR UNDER TO BUY THIS CD.
anyone else agree?

Gaaagh.
Eminem dyed his hair blonde, which according to Dogsdinner was supposed to be a statement of his individuality.
Dogsdinner then proceeded to state that the kids in his school dyed their hair blonde for the same individuality reason - thereby making a mockery of the 'statement'.
Sorry if you understood this and I missed the point of your post.

So if something gets to 41 then it's not pop, but as soon as it rises that one position it is? Got to draw the boundary somewhere though, I suppose..

We all know what pop music is, whoever wants to define it is merely trying to look clever.
Lmao yeah i'm actually thick as pig's sh1te.
What i'm trying to get across is that pop music crosses all genres, it's not a type in itself. If a record has commercial success it popular (you following?), thus it can be called pop music.
Teeny-bopper-pants music is a genre in itself. Comprende?

Pop may mean popular but i think most people reckon Pop is 'Teeny-bopper-pants'. I do anyway....

define pop?what a load of rubbish. How do you define indie music?Everyone calls Travis indie (i detest Travis), yet they too are MOR pop. Indie once stood for independent, now it is the name of a musical genre. The point I'm trying (fairly unsuccessfully) to make is that it can be very hrad to define a genre.Example: Status Quo.Rock or pop (or just plain sh1te).They have guitars and stuff and use 12 bar blues chord sequences (alot) but they sure as hell aint no rock band.Would you call them pop.I know what i'd call them (choice no.3). As already said, anyone who wants you to 'define' pop is just trying to look big, and arguing for the sake of arguing. We all know what pop is and isn't.There are some border line cases, but we could always pretend they don't exist :)As for dogz' original post.I doo find myself liking some pop, much to my disgust.
/me sets mode +shame
blur - britpop?
it's closer to indie than pop really...
pop is vague - the phrase I like the use for boybands/girlbands is bubblegum pop. This covers artists like steps, etc
To be honest however, all genres have their popular songs. Indie have travis and coldplay. Hip-hop has some godawful stuff, which is nevertheless popular, rock and metal has bizkit, linkin park etc and even dance music has some more poppy stuff, like Chicane and Fatboy Slim.
In truth pop music covers a wide variety of genres, and in essence is just the well-known end of each genre.
It is NOT a genre in itself :)
on the other hand...there are engineered bands like Hear'say which fit into the bubblegum pop catagory - this genre doesn't seem to have an "underground" element, like others do. It's really interesting how some genres seem to have underground elements whereas others don't, and these genres seem to be more "dirty" as opposed to the squeaky clean pop image. Whoever heard of people from s club 7 smoking weed for example...
wow - so much self parody in there I'm confusing myself a little...
