You asked for it..... =P Yup there's more to that pink blob of bubble gum than meets the eye......

This guide is all about Ditto, and Ditto breeding. It also explains about DVs, because if you didn't know what they were, then you wouldn't understand a thing in this FAQ.

Please note that the bold paragraphs have the basic info in, the paragraphs in normal text are after these and explain - sometimes in great detail. The explanations can get very complicated and are hard to understand, so if you only want to know the basic facts then only read the bold parts.

The bold text should make sense on it's own, for a less confusing explanation, but if it doesn't then tell me (I haven't been bothered to check it through).

====
DVs
====

To understand this you'll need to know what DVs are. DVs are Diversification Values. Every single pokémon has them, and they determine the max stats your individual pokémon can have. DVs range from 0 to 15, inclusive.

Having a DV of 15 in one stat means that pokémon has the max stats that certain species can possible have. Having a DV of 0 in one stat means that stat will be very poor, for that species standards. A DV of 0 will have 30 stat points less than a DV of 15, so for each DV lower than 15 you go, you lose 2 stat points.

So you know what DVs are but how do you work them out??? Well you can work out DVs at level 50 or 100, but it is easier at level 100 where it is fully trained, with no extra experience. But, you may still get strange results, so to stop this you must fully 'box' your pokémon first (note this is a trick not a cheat).

To 'box' your pokémon just fight lots of battles with it. You will gain EXP but it obviously won't get you anywhere past level 100. Then once you have fought a lot of battles, go to a pokemon centre and deposit your pokémon in Bill's PC. Then withdraw it again, and the stats should have changed slightly (to show the max stats your pokémon can get) and you should be able to then work out DVs properly.

To work out DVs you can simply count how far off your pokémon's stat is from the max, then divide the difference by 2 and take from 15.

Simple use: 15 - (D ÷ 2). Because 15 is the max DV and the difference is how far you are from the DV of 15, but each DV going down by 2 stat points each time, means you need to divide it by 2 first.

=============
SHINY POKÉMON
=============

If you got a Shiny Ditto, there is a good chance that if you breed it, the baby will inherit the certain DVs needed to be shiny. Finding a wild shiny pokémon is a 1 in 8192 chance, but breeding with Shiny Ditto increases your chances to 1 in 64.

To get a shiny Ditto you must have:
Red Gyarados (From Rage Lake)
Mimic TM (in R/B/Y)
Access to RBY area with Wild Dittos (such as the Unknown Dungeon)

1) Trade Red Gyarados to R/B/Y.
2) Teach Gyarados Mimic.
3) Battle a Wild Ditto.
4) Mimic Transform.
5) Wild Ditto transforms into Gyarados.

Now it gets confusing but remember you mimicked Transform so you and the the Ditto (who transformed into you) will both have Transform.

6) Transform Gyarados into the Wild Ditto.
7) Wild Ditto transforms into Gyarados.

The wild Ditto may not use Transform straight away though, it could use Thrash like it did to me knocking me out. I revived Gyarados and switched him back in just as the Ditto used Transform.

8) Catch Wild Ditto.

So now you have the special Ditto needed for breeding shiny pokémon.

That Ditto has 'copied' the Gyarados' special DVs required to be a shiny and when traded to G/S, will be shiny itself :)

So now you have a Shiny Ditto, you can get breeding for shinys. Shinys may not be the best battlers, not being able to have max stats, but they are nice to have. And also nice to show off to your mates with.

Shinys are unique having DVs of 10 in each stat apart from Attack where it can be 2, 3, 6, 7, 10, 11, 14 or 15 and HP where it can be 0 or 8. Having an odd numbered Attack DV like 3, 7, 11 or 15 you would get a HP DV of 8. Otherwise with an even numbered one you would have a HP DV of 0. So with the 8 possible attack stats getting a shiny with the best DVs you would have a 1 in 512 chance.

So now you can go and breed all shiny pokémon that have a gender, although you do have to be patient.

These pokémon have no gender: Mewtwo, Mew, Celebi, Lugia, Ho-oh, Articuno, Moltres, Zapdos, Suicune, Raikou, Entei, Staryu, Starmie, Magnemite, Magneton, Porygon, Porygon2, Voltorb, Electrode, Annon, and Ditto itself.

=========================
SHINY POKÉMON HIDDEN POWER
=========================

Shiny pokémon can only have 2 types of Hidden Power, Grass or Dragon. Both with either a base power of 50 or 70.

Seen as the Attack DV is the only one that changes between: 2, 3, 6, 7, 10, 11, 14 or 15, the types change because they are not 4 spaces apart (so the binary is different), but seen as it is like 2 sequences of 4 numbers that are 4 numbers part from each other (2, 6, 10, 14 and 3, 7, 11, 15) these combined with the constant Defence DV mean there are 2 types possible. The power also changes because some DVs are over 7 and some aren't.

With 2, 3, 6, or 7 the base power of the Hidden Power would be 50.

Because with the Attack stat being 7 or lower, the binary code for X in the Hidden Power formula ((X × 5 + Y) ÷ 2) + 31 would have a 0 for the attack part. With the other stats (Defence, Speed and Special), all contributing towards this binary, all being 10, these would give a 1 for the binary. Put together like: Attack/Defence/Speed/Special you get 0111. In binary this equals 7. So working with Y = 3 (Special DV is 10, and the max number to use is 3) the formula would eventually come out with 50.

With 10, 11, 14, 15 it would obviously be base power of 70 (having each DV over 7).

So with an Attack DV over 7 the Attack DV would give a 1 towards the binary of X. With the other DVs over 7 aswell the binary would be 1111 which figures 15. With 15 the formula would work out to be a base power of 70, the maximum base power of Hidden Power.

The differing Attack DV and the constant DV of 10 in Defence make up the type of the Hidden power. So if you had an even Attack DV it would work out that these would equal a Grass Hidden Power.

With the even numbers: 2, 6, 10 and 14. The binary for each ends in 10 (only the last 2 numbers are used towards the type). Missing out the other even numbers which end in 00, and the odd numbers which end in 11 or 01. And with the Defence DV always 10 the last two numbers of that are: 10. So putting them together we have 1010 which equals 10, on the chart 10 = Grass Power.

But if you had an odd Attack DV, this would equal a Dragon Hidden Power.

The odd numbers are one place after each of the even numbers: 3, 7, 11, 15. So after the binary of the even numbers (always ending in 10) they are obviously going to end in 11, which they do. Again with the Defence DV ending in 10, putting the two ends together you get: 1110. This equals 14, which on the chart shows Dragon Power.

So the first 4 Attack DVs give a base power of 50, and the last 4 have the max power of 70. And also with the even, odd, even, odd Attack DV sequence the type will keep varying.

So with the Attack DVs on a shiny pokémon this is what you can get:
With an Attack DV of 2 you would get a 50 base power Grass Hidden Power (which gives you a HP DV of 0)
With an Attack DV of 3 you would get a 50 base power Dragon Hidden Power (which gives you a HP DV of 8)
With an Attack DV of 6 you would get a 50 base power Grass Hidden Power (which gives you a HP DV of 0)
With an Attack DV of 7 you would get a 50 base power Dragon Hidden Power (which gives you a HP DV of 8)
With an Attack DV of 10 you would get a 70 base power Grass Hidden Power (which gives you a HP DV of 0)
With an Attack DV of 11 you would get a 70 base power Dragon Hidden Power (which gives you a HP DV of 8)
With an Attack DV of 14 you would get a 70 base power Grass Hidden Power (which gives you a HP DV of 0)
With an Attack DV of 15 you would get a 70 base power Dragon Hidden Power (which gives you a HP DV of 8)

========
MAX STATS
========

Ditto isn't just breeding for shiny pokémon though. It can help breed max stat pokémon, with DVs of 15 in each stat.

These pokémon are the best for battling, being the best they can, and many people are proud if they manage to get one, seen as in the wild there is a 1 in 65,536 chance of getting one.

To do this you first need to find a certain Ditto that has the right DVs to pass down to the babies and possibly be max statters.

Get a Ditto with a Defence DV of 15 and a Special of 15 or 7, which are the main stats passed down easily from parents. All children will get Defence DV of 15, and half will get the max Special DV. Some DVs are completely random though, and some just have a lower chance of getting 15 from the breeding. Overall you have a 1 in 512 chance of getting max stats, which is worth the effort, and it is very satisfying when you find you have a platinum pokémon (straight 15s).

===========
HIDDEN POWER
===========

Ever wondered how you can get the Hidden Power you want on a certain pokémon?? Well Ditto can help you get the Hidden Powers you want on any breedable pokémon.....

You first need to find 4 Dittos that each have different Defence DVs, you need one from each category (which you can use over and over again) to help get the different Hidden Powers:
Category 1 = 0, 4, 8, 12.
Category 2 = 1, 5, 9, 13.
Category 3 = 2, 6, 10, 14.
Category 4 = 3, 7, 11, 15.

You would obviously want your Hidden Power to atleast have a possibility of having the max base power, or atleast a good base power so if you can be bothered get one from each category that has a DV of over 7.

Because the Defence DV is always passed down, a number higher than 7 would contribute a 1 towards the binary so it would be ?1?? (put together as Attack/Defence/Speed/Special). The other numbers are basically random, so you'd just have to hope they are over 7.

To actually get the max base power you would of course need all DVs to be over 7, apart from HP. But with just the Defence DV over 7 you would have a 50% chance of still getting a good base power.

When using a Ditto with a Defence DV of over 7 the binary is always going to be ?1??, as explianed earlier. This could result of the numbers 4, 5, 6, 7, 12, 13, 14, and 15 in binary, looking at the charts. Using these numbers as X in the formula ((X × 5 + Y) ÷ 2) + 31 (again assuming Y is over 3) these lead to the possible base powers.
((4 × 5 + 3) ÷ 2) + 31 = 42.5
((5 × 5 + 3) ÷ 2) + 31 = 45
((6 × 5 + 3) ÷ 2) + 31 = 47.5
((7 × 5 + 3) ÷ 2) + 31 = 50
((12 × 5 + 3) ÷ 2) + 31 = 62.5
((13 × 5 + 3) ÷ 2) + 31 = 65
((14 × 5 + 3) ÷ 2) + 31 = 67.5
((15 × 5 + 3) ÷ 2) + 31 = 70

If Y was to be 0, 1 or 2 though, it would barely make any difference to any of the base powers.

Y is added on, then halfed in the formula later. The Special DV (Y) can only go down to 0 and from 3, this gives a range of 3. With it being divided by 2, it shows that Y can only differ the base power by a maximum of 1.5. If Y = 0 then it can lower the base damage by 1.5, if Y = 1 then it lower it by 1, and if Y = 2 then it can lower it by 0.5.

These 4 Dittos can can help you get every single Hidden Power you need, although there is still some luck involved in getting just the right one.

The Defence DV is automatically passed down from the parent which is why we have to use different Dittos with different DVs for different Hidden Powers. But the Attack DV is also vital in getting the right Hidden Power, but the attack DV is random when breeded, so there is a slight chance you will get one of the other possible DVs in the same category:
Category 1 = Fighting, Rock, Fire, Psychic
Category 2 = Flying, Bug, Water, Ice
Category 3 = Poison, Ghost, Grass, Dragon
Category 4 = Ground, Steel, Electric, Dark

So if you were trying to get Grass Hidden Power, there is a possibility that you won't get it.

Trying to get a Grass Hidden Power, there is 1 in 4 chance of getting it, and a 1 in 4 chance of the other possibilities, so you may need to breed 4 eggs just to make sure, although possiblity is a possibilty and you may breed 100 eggs and not get it (chances of that would be ULTRA slim).

With each of the 4 Defence DV Categories there are 4 different Attack DVs for each that lead to the Hidden Powers (4 x 4 = 16).

Defence DV Category 1:
0, 4, 8, 12 = Fighting
1, 5, 9, 13 = Rock
2, 6, 10, 14 = Fire
3, 7, 11, 15 = Psychic

Defence DV Category 2:
0, 4, 8, 12 = Flying
1, 5, 9, 13 = Bug
2, 6, 10, 14 = Water
3, 7, 11, 15 = Ice

Defence DV Category 3:
0, 4, 8, 12 = Poison
1, 5, 9, 13 = Ghost
2, 6, 10, 14 = Grass
3, 7, 11, 15 = Dragon

Defence DV Category 4:
0, 4, 8, 12 = Ground
1, 5, 9, 13 = Steel
2, 6, 10, 14 = Electric
3, 7, 11, 15 = Dark

If you know the Defence DV Category of the Ditto you breeded with, and you can work out the babies attack DV, then you can see what Hidden Power it'll have.

So if you breeded a Ditto with a Defence DV of 11, this would be a Category 4 Defence DV Ditto. Then if your Attack DV was 13, this would equal a Steel Hidden Power. And with Defence and Attack DVs over 7, these would give 11?? towards the binary used for base power. Looking at the charts this could only give the numbers 12, 13, 14, and 15 in binary, which would lead to very good base powers. Seen as there are 16 possibilities of the Speed DV, 8 being seven or lower, 8 being over seven, you could say there is also a 1 in 2 chance of this giving a 1 towards binary, being 111? that could lead to 14 or 15 in binary. You'd also have a 1 in 2 chance that the Special DV would be over 7, which would give max power.

So there if you get everything right, there is a good chance of getting a good base power.

Using the Dittos with Defence DVs of other 7 then:
Attack DV over 7 = 1 in 2 chance
Defence DV over 7 = Certain
Speed DV over 7 = 1 in 2 chance
Special DV over 7 = 1 in 2 chance
So there would be a 1 in 8 chance of getting max base power for your pokémon's Hidden Power.

So there is a 1 in 8 chance of getting the right Hidden Power, with a good base power.

A 1 in 4 chance of getting the right Hidden Power, with a 1 in 2 chance of getting a good base power (1 in 2 chance of Attack DV being over 7) = 1 in 8 chance.

And there is a 1 in 32 chance of getting the perfect baby, with the correct Hidden Power, with the max 70 base power.

Again with a 1 in 4 chance of getting the right Hidden Power, and with a 1 in 8 chance of getting max base power (1 in 8 chance of Attack, Speed and Special being over 7) = 1 in 32 chance.

So there you go, one of the most useful pokémon in the game, you could say he is very important in battling, indirectly... =P

Nintendo have a machine that detects code alteration,so if you're thinking of entering official competitions then forget the codes.

Although there is one way to train your Pokémon quicker...

I wouldn't shark - i'm totally against all that sort of thing "pokethics", y'see. I doubt Nintendo have such a machine though. It's just a story so that less people shark their 'mon.
