I've just bought half life generation, as it's only been out for a while I was expecting to get out line and play pretty soon, after all the orginal half life in the box was renamed game of the year edition, so you at least expect the latest files, NOOOOooooooo....!

I had update it first to patch 1104, which I luckily found in pc zone's free disc if you subscribe. then I had down load patch 1104-1107 wieghing in at 11.4 MB, it was pain as I used getright which kept disconnecting every 5mins, so I had to sit at my computer resuming all the while. Now at the same size I have to download 1106-1107. Then I MIGHT be able to play!

You're probably thinking why didn't I just download 1107 at 70MB, it's just not practicle to download that on a dailup modem. ( ppl should burn it and sell, after all sierra can be bothered.

If this is my initation to the world of online gaming, then I'm ready for anything now. :homer:

Oh my question is why is it essential to have the latest patch?

Cheers all

when you have played online games for a while you will actually look forward to the next patch that will fix all those little and not so little problems that the game suffers with.you will say oh thank got this patch is only 70mb.
then in halflifes case you will find that youve had to download yet another pile of steaming crap with no fixes but full of dreadfull mods like tfc,and dm classsic for nothing.
welcome to online gaming

very true, you'd be hard pushed to find a dmc server, tfc are few & far between, just have get on with it and download another 50MB patch for counter strike, I've been told its worth it however. :)

You can get many of the required updates on the cover disks of PC gaming mags. PC Gamer, for example, has a patch archive on their DVD, and always includes the latest patches for major games [I used PCG as it is the one I buy regularly]. As for TFC servers being few and far between, I have never had a problem finding a good game.
