View Full Version : Early Wireplay Dayz
I was suprised to see these boards back up, I'm even more suprised to see my account survive :D
As far as I can tell:
Wireplay (online gaming platfrom from BT - the referred 2 early dayz above) went to Gameplay (lost interest sorry), and now it's gone back to Wireplay...
Does anyone actually remember the Wireplay dayz?
I was on Wireplay before I even knew what the internet was, it was only a few months after installing Wireplay before I had my first internet account (AOL - what a n00b I was).
I actually prefered Wireplay and couldn't grasp what the internet was there for (as all my gaming needs was thru Wireplay)...
So.. any Wireplay girlz or boyz about still? Loved playing Red Alert, I probally 0wned a few of you (and visa versa).
Few names I remember:
Jammy 56 (RA tourny leader)
Littlejam (his son)
Vorloth ;)
loooads more too...
Damn I miss those simple days, such good memories. I miss my tesla rushes on V3, sigh...

Makes me feel like such a n00b.
I didn't even play a game online until early 2000 when I was working at Gameplay, didn't have internet access at home until 2001, dialup at home was such major comedown from the 10mb leased line we had at Gameplay.
Still, 'them were the days' as they say. :)
ahh Duke 3D... them was the days :E
hehe, I could never get my mouse to work with Duke 3D, but I loooved playing it all the same... Shame you lot always 0wned me though

i played on old(ish) Wireplay..especially the client - it was decent...
WP had the best servers and i didnt lag much but then gameplay had to go and shut it down. hated them for that and haven't bought a game from them since  (id just joined WP servers aswell :() after that i played on uk2 servers - they were second best then (can u believe it?). their IPs changed and i didnt want to have to wait to ping all 20000000 servers just to be able to play on them. then i got their IPs and they were laggy as....
then WP came back and i was happy :D
(ish)

what is the difference between Ltd and PLC? tell me! isn't gameplay ONE company?

Gameplay Ltd (Technically Gameplay GB Ltd) is what *was* the mail-order side of Gameplay.
Since Gameplay went tits-up, the mail-order business was bought out by management (I think) and now has fack all to do with Gameplay PLC - which is a shell company with some money and an abismal share price but which doesn't actually *do* anything.
Gameplay GB (http://www.gameplay.co.uk) are good guys.
Gameplay PLC is still run by the "muppets" who successfully managed to run the old Gameplay into the ground.

I'll not buy from a company that has an anti-muppet policy.
That's down right muppetist.

I remember when this forum was just one huge field of grass....
depending on which type of grass, that was either a week ago, or three years.

I remember Jammy he used to run the RITV leagues
Scarily, I can remember writing large chunks of the Wireplay client code back in those halcyon days... must be getting on for 8 years ago now...

I actually tried to play MUD2. Gave it a couple of attempts but at the time I found it too bewildering to play. All text and no graphics which I hadn't seen since my speccy days.

Hmm, strange that...
Never remember seeing you playing PCM, when did you play and under what alias? I'm sure I'd remember you playing if I did at the same time, you're not the easiest of people to forget ;)

You couldn't have been as bad as me. I played as a PP and still managed to get killed by a boar when I was a priest.
I played under the Alias 'Anarchy' was while MUD2 was free, played it non-stop for about 5 months.
They were good days :)

Phlash! Hello m8ey, I remember you from when I was on the Wireplay Helpdesk. Wasn't your brother one of the coders too?
Hope things are going well for you. God, it's almost 2 years to the day since Gameplay Plc (spit) got rid of all the WP Helpdesk and half the other GP staff (was Feb 2nd 2000 when that happened).
I thought I was 'old skool' WP staff but you just put me to shame. :E
Yup - Stuart was on the team in BT before we woz sold off to create gameplay.com.. he posted recently as Slash909..
I ought to say that you guys ran a decent helpdesk too - only bothered us techies 10 times a week
Phil.

I got introduced to wireplay by a m8 of mine back in... ooooh 97 or saiing, something like that, before I had any sort of internet connection. We played TFC mostly (nothings changed) at his house. Then when I finally did, around 2000, it was freeserve and I had a ping of 1300, so I still couldnt play.
Finally in jan of 2001 I got ADSL and havnt looked back. Now I'm the mediocre player you see before you.
I can remember getting inserts with magazines promoting Wireplay... Sure it was WP.?. Wireplay still remains in a lot of peoples hearts as an 'original UK community'.
**long sigh glances to floor shuffles feet and looks up again**
Your round innit!?

Indeedy. The experience of walking into WH Smiths, looking at the magazine racks and realising that a million cover CDs had our code on was unique and rather cool ;)
**shuffles back to smelly old gits corner **
Still your round though.. :dog:
