View Full Version : ARGH, My mouse jumps!!!

OK, got a Logitech MX700.
Had an Epox 8KHA board, it died, got an Asus A7V233 for free, mouse worked fine on USB 1.1 port, jumped on USB 2.0 and PS2.
Thought, OK, will just use it on USM 1.0
Tuesday night, I thought, I know, I'll put my Zalman on this new CPU & board, didn't actually make any difference from the quieter Cooler Master one, so I thought I would put that back on. ARCH screwdriver slipped, fubar'd the board.
Got a new Asus A7V333 and fit that last night, did a complete reinstall of XP, didn't attach any other USB devices, and it still jumps.
I have tried it on USB1.0 onboard, USB2.0 onboard, USB2.0 on an NEC card, and USB2.0 on a hub connected to USB1.0 and USB2.0.
I have even tried the PS2 adapter and still no joy.
I'm guessing there's a chipset vs driver issue going on here. I never had this prob on the older Epox ith a VIA 133 chipset, only on the 233 and 333 chipset.
WTF is going on?
Haven't tried it with a wired USB mouse yet, mainly because I haven't got one.
The pointer freezes for a split second on screen, but then appears where it should be, but it's damn irritating.
Also I have noticed that my soundcard, video card, NEC USB card, and one of the onboard USB ports are all sharing the same IRQ, XP won't let me change them, and even if I turn off PnP OS and set the IRQ's in the BIOS to those PCI slots, it makes no difference.
I have tried everything I can think of, even mailed Logitech for support.
Any of you geeks going to take a pot shot and see if you strike it lucky with the solution?

Hmmmmm
I have that mouse and A7V333 Motherboard and it runs fine on USB2.0.
Move the mouse holder away from any electrical equipment?

Your mouse is jumping because you put it on a high sugar diet, chump (ta-da!)
Well I can say that mobo has never given me any problems personally with any USB device, I would be tempted to agree with your guess at it being a driver / chipset quirk if it wasn't for the fact that it still does it via PS2.
I would try it on another machine first of all, it's not impossible that the mouse has just had a funny turn?
As regards the PCI devices sharing IRQs, this shouldnt be a problem, I have something like a dozen devices sharing a single IRQ on mine and they are good as gold. I would recommend that you maybe try yanking all the cards except the video card out and try the mouse "bare bones" though.
Take a look at your via 4 in 1 drivers too.

I forgot to mention, I have tried moving the receiver, no joy.
I also had the same issue with my Intellimouse Explorer Wireless when I tried that on USB2.0 when I had the A7V233 on the NEC 2.0 card though as that board didn't have USB 2.0 onboard.
It's a weird one.
This mouse was working fine on the 233 on USB 1.0
Just can't get the sodding rodent going on this 333 board on any port though.
Also I get a short sharp staric burst kind of noise over my Creative Audigy occasionally.
Could it be related?
I'm wondering if it's all down to the graphics card. I know some GF cards play silly gits on some motherboards, and there are some GF4 issues with the Audigy.
I hate computers!
Worst case, I have to use this as an excuse to get a new Asus GF4 :)

Could be, the legacy Soundblaster issue that dates back to the AWE32 does relate to IRQ services.
Silly patronising question but have you tried putting the mouse straight to the mobo as opposed to going through a hub? I say that cos I figure you must have one with all those USB devices, I think you should try and unplug as much stuff as possible and work from there.

Yup, tried on the onboard USB 1.0, 2.0 and PS2 (with the adapter) ports.
No joy.
Then tried on the USB 2.0 card, then through the hub connected to all the different ports.
Will have to try pulling cards out me thinks, get it back to basics and try to narrow it down a bit that way.
Also tried disabling USB2.0 on the motherboard and using the USB 1.0 port.
Damn thing.
I spose I need to try this with a wired USB mouse just to see if it's a mouse thing, a conflict, or whatever.

By the way, can you use the 4in1 drivers on XP?
The Asus site only has 98, ME, and 2k for 4.37, and that was bast mid last year.
Via's webby says that any hybrid boards that use the KT333 and Northwood chipset (like this board) needs to have the drivers from the manufacturer.
Are you using them under XP LSM?

Get a cat, you will soon find that your jumpy mouse will soon settle down and behave itself.

Yeah the drivers are generic, one set for everything now as I recall.
Pick the apples from the tree http://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=2 they have given it some weird BS marketing name now mind, wish people wouldn't do that.
"VIA Hyperion 4in1 v4.45, released 10 December 2002" those are the boys for you by the looks.
You don't wanna be looking on the Asus site as your primary source, though I am not saying you should ignore them either.
A Hybrid board is one where the North and South bridges come from a different manufacturer (say one from VIA, the other from AMD), the A7V333 does have VIA throughout so you can safely install the 4 in 1s with no worries.

Oh, and don't forget to yank all those unnecessary PCI cards out, might save you a shed load of time and agro in the long run.
from hardocp a while back, I read the forums there and there were quite a few users with similar problem to urs, all seemed to be reciever based. I've had no probs with mine atall.
Logitech MX700:
We have had some great things to say about the Logitech cordless MX700 and we have had some bad things to say about the MX700 as have some of our readers. We have seen the batteries blamed (which still may be part of the problem) and the Logitech Mouseware blamed.
What we have come to find with our mice (yes, we went out and bought another MX700 to compare) is that the positioning of the receiver seems to be the primary reason for our mouse working oddly. It was hanging on links and other objects in our web browser. Moving our base, that is the charger and the receiver, has cleared up all of our problems as of now. One [H]'er went as far to explain that he had to tip his sideways to get rid of the bugginess.
Bottom line is this. If you are having problems with your MX700, it is likely due to interference from devices around it, such as monitors or speakers. Give it a move and see if it does not clear up your issues. Also with ours, the Mouseware has worked great, although there is still an issue of trying to get the wheel to work properly in games, but there do seem to be some fixes out there. Good luck and happy cordless gaming.

Maybe it's your dodgy mobile phone doing it Fod :P

OK, after messing about a bit more, it's not actually the mouse pointer that freezes.
It's the whole damn system.
If I play an MP3 or any audio/video for that matter, the whole damn thing freezes for a split second.
I will try the new 4in1.

OK, have updated Audigy drivers to the latest, installed the new 4in1's, and disabled the onboard soundcard in case that was causing probs.
Might be my imagination, but the audio skipping doesn't seem quite as bad, but it's still doing it, and the mouse still skips/freezes.
This is starting to wind me up now.
strip msconfig to nuffin! reboot

Hmmm that's jogged a distant memory of mine, I had a pute that did that sometime last year, cant remember offhand how I fixed it though, I suspect it had something to do with putting a PCI card in a different slot but not sure.

OK well I have read a few threads in other places, and talked to the guy in the shop, and he has had that problem with Asus boards and MSI & Innogear GF4 cards.
So I used it as an oppurtunity to buy an Asus GF4 Ti4200 128mb.
They any good? ;)
Anyway, will fit that later and report back :)
You got any hardware or software polling the motherboard for information? Such as an Asus I-Panel? If you have turn the bloody thing off in the bios. Even if it you don't have the I-Panel installed it will still poll the hardware monitoring circuit for temp and fan speed info every few seconds.
That is your problem.

Koppo is teh loosar!!!111oneoneone
I found out what it was purely by accident.
I was messing about disabling stuff on the board, trying jumpers instead of auto etc, powered back up, seemed ok, went to play some music and the drive was missing, I'd knocked the secondary ide cable out.
So that meant it was either the hard drive or DVD ROM on that chain.
Turns out it was the DVD ROM.
As a slave, it causes all these problems, switch it to master, and it works perfectly.
I have now put my two HDD's on primary, and my CDRW & DVDROM on secondary, plugged everything back in, and it's running like a dream.
Thank fuŠk for that!

See I said you should remove everything unnecessary and work from there.
You don't listen though do you, nag, nag, nag.
Shouldnt have mixed a HDD and CD on the same cable anyway, chump :P
Nice one. Only suggested the monitor thing because I had the exact same problem with an Asus A7V333 and it was the I-Panel interrogating the mobo every 8 seconds that was causing my Logitech MX500 (on USB 2.0) to skip.
Still wondering why your DVD drive was causing intermittent system lag though...

17-01-2003, 23:56
No idea, very bloody weird. I've never seen anything like that before.
And LSM, I did actually have it with the two drives on one, and the two cd'son the other, but when I started getting the lag and stuff I changed it over to see if it made any difference.
It wasn't the combination of the drives though, just that the DVDROm is gh3y.

What make is that DVD drive, purely out of interest?

Pioneer 16 speed DVD
It's not a cheap one :)
(Well, wasn't at the time)
I must say, I like this new graphics card :)

Ah...I have a slot loading Pioneer in mine, I wonder if that was the problem I came across too, so long ago I can't remember.
