Get yourself one of these little babies if you fancy the best value for money graphics upgrade...EVER part II.
I picked one up from Novatech and for £113 inc. delivery and used the software mod to turn it into a 9700. Overclocked it PAST 9700 pro speeds and got a very meaty 3Dmark score. Can play games with full AA & AF with no slowdown. Looks very very sweet and will let you play UT2k3 & Doom 3 (I imagine) with max detail super smooth.
Wayhey. I'm chuffed.

"software mod to turn it into a 9700"
thought this was make your 9500 into a 9700 via a emulation mode.
if so u can do this with geforces, usually slow tho ;/
have heard of 9500 being turned into 9700 with soldering and stuff on the pcb also :E
anyhow im quite happy with my albatron ti4200P Turbo , which is running at Ti4600 speeds and above :D
sooo wat 3dmark score u get anyhow :o
swish
i think i will get one then!
can anyone tell me the exact model and place to buy it from, linkage would be class :x (is novatech the cheapest?!) :D
ta!

Nah it's not to do with emulation.
Here's the deal:
Ati for some reason decided to make the Radeon 9500 NON pro 128mb version out of the same pcb as the Radeon 9700. The funny thing is - it's EXACTLY the same card (slower memory than the pro though) with 4 pipelines disabled VIA DRIVERS! So the hacked drivers unlock the 4 pipelines and give a massive boost. With hacked drivers the radeon 9500 is a 9700 and mine overclocks to a higher speed than the 9700 pro (costing £270). They won't clock higher than a 9700 pro can go (because of slower memory) BUT they get very close for a stupidly small price.
Here's a very useful link to a madonion post: http://discuss.futuremark.com/forum/showflat.pl?Cat=&Board=techdisplayadapters&Number=1702403&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=0&fpart=1
I used that to mod mine.
The only thing to worry about is that there isn't a 100% success rate. It's a risk worth taking for a 110 quid card though. Even if you don't manage to mod it it's worth the money.
Just to confirm the card requires no hardware mod. There is a seemingly 75% success rate. There is NO RISK. You will not damage the card, you simply might get artifacts are doing the mod - at which point you just reinstall drivers and you're fine.
My score went from 10500 @ stock speeds/no mod to 12800 modded & overclocked. This was with a fairly duff cpu so I'm hoping to get over 14k, near to 15k with my new cpu that's arriving soon.

this not work with the 128meg Pro versions?
[SCW]Nessie

If an unlocked non-pro goes from 4-8 pipe lines and the pro is already 8, does this make the cards EXACTLY the same or is there other differences?
[WiZ]Prodigy
17-01-2003, 15:24
The PRO card has 128-bit memory and will be slower than the 9500 when the 9500 is modded to a 9700.
AFAIK the 9500 modded to a 9700 is exactly the same. Different companies may use different memory so this is probably gonna be the only difference (and things like vivo, coolers etc. that different companies might add). The 9700 pro has faster timings on the memory so you can overclock this higher.

The Hardware mod works for all Operating Systems.
If you have any soldering ability you can mod the Radeon no problem. You just have to move one of the resistors on the core.
Not for the faint hearted, but then again if you go soldering perfectly good bits of kit in the search of Mhz you arent faint hearted
In the last month i have killed 2 x gf 4 ti 4600 ****ing about with them. Oh and one Hercules Radeon 9700 pro
Not to mention an N-Force motherboards, oh and a stick of RAM.
Time to stop overclocking me thinks :(
Here's a link to the Russian Site that dicovered the Radeon Hardware mod:
http://www.overclockers.ru/news/newsitem.shtml?category=2&id=1041715156
Its in Russian obviously but it shows good piccies of the Radeon core and the Transistors that need moving.
I've got some more info somewhere, if interested find me on irc
Rex
just orderd myself one , they dispatchin it on 21st hopefully :)
been lookin at this mod thing for a few days seems worth it even if it dont work, just hope the new batch they get is still on the same pcb as 9700 :)
you can get a 9700 for £198 now unless anyones seen better.....
[WiZ]Prodigy
19-01-2003, 02:46
You can get them for £109 quid...that's the novatech 9500. Why pay £170 (I've seent them at this price) for a 9700 when you can get a 9500 that is as good if not better for a much better price.
Suppose it's a risk but if it doesn't work jhust return the card within 7 days via your statutory rights.

This is a better card right?

than the 9500 modded to 9700.........?
[WiZ]Prodigy
19-01-2003, 12:57
You're jesting?
That is a steaming pile of poo compared to a decent 9500 modded to 9700. Speed wise and IQ wise.
As you say yourself, the memorys slower and theres a 25% chance of it not working, I guess it's down to disposable income, but personally I'd rather pay the extra £60 for peace of mind.
Having said that there's no sense in throwing money away, so the cheaper I can get a 9700 the better.
I guess I'm just not one of lifes gamblers, I always seem to get the 25%

I'm usually in the same boat.
Which is why I bought 3. 1st one out of the box worked and overclocked very well too. Champion.
can i just check something....
this works for both the 9500 (128mb) card, and the pro version yes?
i canne find the 9500 128mb without the PROOO :O
/me wants to check before he buys and wastes money :}

only works on non pro pba's
[WiZ]Prodigy
19-01-2003, 15:46
Just as well you checked :)
There's a store in the UK that still has non pros in stock for around 135 but novatech has them (but not in stock) for 109.
ooooohh
close :} might see how the old gf2 favours a new cpu - not as good, but still better than nuffin :P

Can the Radeon 9000 non pro be modded to anything? I wish it could cause I have one at it is utter pish :P
aye, if you spray it with petrol and light it, it becomes a burning pile of sh*t? :P
Why not wait a bit longer and get a GeForceFX (nv30) when it's out? It will p*ss all over the Radeons from a great height.
Lt. Sex Machine

They are sure to be megabucks though surely like every other new generation nVIDIA product?
aye but rumour has it, thats its starting price is like $400->$500....thats the price of 3 or 4 radeon 9500's :P
Aye but no need to get one straight away though?!
Especially for people with Geforce3's or 4's. Whats the major rush, the Geforce4's deal with every game out at the moment and probably everything that will be out until the nv30 is like 200 quid or there abouts?
the fx's are not meant to be 'that' more powerful than the 9700 pro's - so if you can get one that will be close ish (say 30 or 40 fps at quake 3 - but whats the diff between 400 and 450 fps? :P) then its fecking good value for a 1/4 of its price :P
I think Ironheart mentioned on the GFX Card forum that in benchmarks the difference was around 40%, with 50% being possible with tweaks.
aye but i have seen sites saying 10% probable - 20% max.....tis all up in the air atm...
although if it really does come with a fan the size of the card itself...

What about us poor GF2 users? Methinks I might try this.

Exactly - you pay £110 and get a card that will perform almost as well as the Geforce FX at stock speeds. Ok the Geforce FX will undoubtedly be faster but not by a great margin. By the time the price drops to anything reasonable it'll still be much more than this bargain.
Besides - GF4s CAN'T handle today's games with AA & AF whereas the Radeons not only support DX9 fully but take hardly any performance hit with these fantastic options turned on. Much better buy imo.
anyway ron, wtf you worried about? CM4 will hardly put a strain on ANY GC about :P
