View Full Version : Course choosing help
Well most of you know my story.
Anyway I did a GNVQ intermediat last year and got a Merit as it was piss easy.
This year I'm doing a BTEC Advanced in IT and it's utter crap boring as hell and basically I'm thinking of dropping out.
Basically I'm going to try my luck with Uni's even if it's Derby as I don't have time to waist I'm 19 ffs.
Basically I've spoken to my flatm8s and they think it's a good idea. I'm just gonna go up to the uni (after I find the course I want to do) and find the guy that runs it and tell him how it is and hopefully he'll see sense and let me join up next year or find another way round being late :P
So where can I find out about courses etc all IT based if pos.
Well, if I were you I'd push for not doing anything less than an HND course. It all depends on what your current 'skill' level is in the area you want to study however, as sometimes you just have to work your way up (I hate that...wasting time in far too many cases).
Impress the tutor of the course-to-be with some good research when you speak to him (along the lines of "the course I'm doing now doesn't go into enough detail in <this area>", where <this area> is a very unheard of field in the 'lower courses', but is quite advanced... ). The usual spiel :D
If there are such courses, try going on an evening course in your field of study at the uni, there are sometimes summer courses. If you can find one where the tutor is involved and impress them, then you could push for the higher courses.
..and so ends my fairly unqualified advice :D
You still have time to get your UCAS form in. Deadline isn't until march afaik.

lol the way you talk as if you are 29 not 19 :)
I didnt start the uni im at till i was 20 and even then i was one of the younger ones in my class, dont bother rushing...take your time and find the uni/course you want, even if it means taking 1 more year out.
It'll work out better in long run.
Can't afford to take one year out with no garantee(sp) that I'll get onto the course I want seeing as I have no A lvls and I'm gonna try sweet talking whoever runs the course.
They dont soley go on A Levels, they do take alternatives, phone a uni and ask them to send you a prospectus, it should take about a week to deliver (If that) and you'll be able to see the asking requirements.
Do a dance for them Oggy, that'll get you in :)
www.ucas.co.uk for a looong list of courses in case you didn't know :P
And you can ask them for a CD!

to be quite honest this post has really got on my tits and i feel has insulted me, i never ever get irrate or flame about anythin on these forums but this has done my head in
i worked my ham off in the introduction of the 'AS-level' year, after being very worried and studying very hard i got through them alright, then finally puttin my head down and studyin my woopsadaisy off to attain 4 a-levels at a relitivily high standard to be able to do the course i wanted to do
and now your saying to me you want to go to uni my f**king sweet takling the f**king faculty f**king head to get a place?
well you can chew on my f**King mwaf, get a f**king grip and do some f**king work to attain the things you f**King want, thats what i had to do, i didnt get to f**k around and then "sweet talk" any leechheaded labotimised man****e ueseless aids vicitim to get a place at uni, i had to work my f**king balls off#
edit - i dont know if you have any extenuating circumstances - like ur cat killed itslef cus u bored it so much - or anything, but it doesnt take away from the fact that the way u put it still p*ssed me off
Thats debatable ;)
Finish your course and then go to uni is what I'd do. My degree course is pretty boring and I can't see myself being a Computer Programmer but it'll get me a nice job in the City earning lots of cash if I keep at it.
I don't have time to waist I'm 19 ffs.
lol
Kinda agree with The Package too, just wish less swearing!
Got to agree with Package, even though he molests american happy campers ;).

I did my AS levels last year, and decided to take a year out working this year. I cannot wait to go back and do my A2's, purely because once you leave education you understand how enjoyable it is compared to the sort of mundane work you are left open to being a school leaver.
Basically Oggy, you may not like the course, but you're set to benefit at the end of the day by getting the qualification. It's only another 3/4 months, and you'll be over the moon if you get a good grade which enables you to go to a uni and do a course you want to do.
Just think about it this way, if you do the work for this BTEC, get a good grade, there's no reason why a Uni such as Derby wouldn't accept you onto a decent IT course.
Balls in your court :O
thx for the help next time I'll remember not to post on any forums and just ask ppl in irc
This is quite an important decision, I would decide it yourself. Internet forums wouldn't exactly be my first turning point.
I really meant to say where can I find info on courses which razz gave me.
so agree with you koolmod, i took a year out after school and ended up getting a fulltime job. The longer you can stay in education the better imo, full time work is an absolute drag and in order to get a job that isn't so much of a drag you need qualifications. Unless your life long dream is to empty wheely bins of course.
I'll be starting uni when im 20, in the same position spacemonkey is and exactly like him i'll no doubt be one of the youngest. When visiting my mates at uni i realise how many mature students there is, i mean look how many people take years out anyway you'd only be a year older.
Anyway oggy i really dont see why you came on here to be honest, why ask a tfc forum this when you could easily get an answer to every question you have from your colleges student services department.
Suggesting that you might try blaging your way into univercity without doing any of the work isn't exactly going to get the most warm replies now is it.
Anyway i can't see you getting any where near a decent univercity with a GNVQ Intermediate, i mean they teach that in school. It's mostly just a introduction to the AVCE course, which im i started on at college after school. Staffordshire uni the univercity linked to our college said i'd need a BB in AVCE and at least a C in A level business if i wanted to get onto the computer science degree. My MTL (minium target level) atm is BBB, so fingers crossed i won't f**kup my exams which i had this week.

iIdoubt many universitys would consider taking you on, seeing as you are dropping out from a FE course in the hope of doing so. Its very uncommon to even be considered for courses without having the requirement qualifications unless you are going in as a mature student, i.e. 25+

Whatever you do, dont ****ign drop out
You wont have much to loose by staying in the course and seeing it to the end.
Agree with LG, no Unis will look at your if you dropped out of a college course.
Agree with Package I'm afraid

Not long ago I was doing my OND Computer Studies course at Hastings College. Half-way through I was seriously considering dropping it because it wasn't the type of computer related stuff that I wanted to do. I ended up carrying on and it ended up being the best decision I ever made. I came out of it with a Distinction all the way through. Plus for some reason I ended up receiving a little trophy for being their best computer student of 2001.
However, this allowed me to move up into doing my current course which is an HND in Multimedia and I love it. I'm doing computer graphics, 3d modelling, animation, film making, web design and web coding. :D
So obviously my advice to you is to stick with your current course otherwise you will have wasted this year. :)
I dropped out of a Uni Internet Computing degree...and now I'm an Internet Content Editor... go figure.

oggy, if u're fed up with education u might be better off gettin some job training through an apprenticeship or something along those lines. My cousin did that at 16 with Fujitsu, they made everyone redundant a year or so later, but it allowed him to easily find a job down south with Panasonic and now he's getting a very decent wage for someone in their early 20s... plus they're paying for him to do a degree... might not work out for everyone, but it's turned out well for him. Higher education isn't the only route to a good career
Aye that was one of the things I spoke to my parents about.
It's a long story why I want to drop out but basically the college fvcked us all around this year and put us on a totally different course to what we were doing last year hence there being a high dropout rate so far.
A**e wiping help.
I don't know whether to start myself or ask my Mum to do it for me. Can you help?
Don't like it don't read don't comment easy enough.
