Opinions?

Went to see it, despite beuing told from a few sources it wassn't very good, going on the assumption that,

a) its Scorcese (sp?) and therefore HAS to be l337
b) he spent like 5 years making the b*gger.

Anyway, i was reasonably impressed. Apparantly when they cobbled it together it was around 5 hours long so there was a lot of stuff chopped out in a fairly rapid manner, and you can sort of tell near the end where the plot gets a little confused, but on the whole it seemed pretty good.

Daniel Day Lewis was truly class as Bill, and Di Caprio's accent, was either a terrible joke, or absolutely perfect, but we don't know which. :P

P.S. Liam's mace was class. :D

I thought it was fantastic, easily one of my top 20 films of all time. The acting was flawless, i think you can tell when the acting is just breathtaking when you forget they're actually actors and see them as the character. Talking about daniel day lewis of course.

I think people think the story line goes a bit thin if you they it's just a rivaly between two men story, it's not. It's purely about the draft riots and the factions, that is the main story. Everything else is a sub plot to help you understand what it's like, i think the end scene with the graveyard and new york changing but always staying the same is brilliant.

Hope he gets best director for it at the oscars, although i think Peter jackson deserves it just as much for the two towers.

Film i've seen recently that blow me away was Confessions of a dangerous mind, directed by clooney and about the producer who made shows like the newly wed game and the dating game (america's blind date). About him having a double life as a CIA agent based on his notes.

People were walking oout when they were at the graves before the end, which was dumb because I felt that that final bit was the whole point of the film :o

I'm a big fan of Scorsese, and i've been waiting with baited breath to see if this is good or not - unfortunately they won't let 14 year olds in to see an 18 :/ What actors does it have apart from Day Lewis and Di Caprio? No chance of a cameo by Robert De Niro or Joe Pesci, I s'pose :(? Does it have the same kind of 'narrative' style that Goodfellas, Casino and Taxi Driver have? I've heard its violent, is it? Thanks for any information.

De Niro was billed for Di Caprio's role when Sir Martin first concieved the idea - in 1978 :D.

In fact, De Nero was first choice for Bill the Butcher but pulled out because of the main filming being in Italy. Nonetheless, Day Lewis is often known as England's answer to Bobby and I find it hard to believe that any actor alive could have done a better job.

Overall, I enjoyed it. It's not up there with the likes of Goodfella's and Taxi Driver, but it is a reflection of the great mans standards that this can only be looked upon as good as opposed to god-like.

The cinema release was cut to hell by the film company - Scorcese has already stated that a full version will be released in time. Hopefully, the full release will do it justice.

My hat goes off the the worlds greatest ever director :D

Well it looks like it has the ability to be a good film to me, but everyone I know that has seen it has come out saying its the worse scorsese(sp?) film they have seen

I extremely enjoyed the movie, it wasn't exactly typical Scorsese fare but most of his trademark techniques are in it ( frenetic battlefield cuttings, then one long tracking, ie the boat scene). I thought the movie was extremely impressive, although you can tell the ending is hastily edited, I'm waiting for the full length movie to see added scenes between Bill and Amsterdam.

Anyone spot Martin and his family in the movie? ;)

saw it on friday and i think it was pretty good, not brilliant though

daniel day lewis was just class, apparently he was in character for the duration of the 6 month shooting, which musta got kinda annoying.

leo and cameron diaz were ok, but the showing each others scars thing was done in lethal weapon III ffs!! which made it kinda laughable

the film was also a bit over the top to be really hitting, with the constant orchestral score, especially at the end

and sprite, its clearly not just about the draft riots :P if it was, i'd have been pished off having to watch 2 and a half hours of complete pointlessness :P

but overall i enjoyed it, it was an interesting setting which i hadn't heard of before in any real detail and its worth watching

I was expecting better really. In the end the draft plot and the revenge plot are pretty much seperate. It feels like 2 films bodged together instead of one big film. You can really tell it has been cut down, the extended version(if it ever surfaces) should be better I rekon. The middle of the film seems to drag on forever with pointless plots. DDL really does save the film with a great new yoik accent swearing worse than Bernard Manning

Im sure Scorsese get an oscar for it but he doesnt deserve it. It seems GoNY has been branded as an epic masterpiece but imo it falls a long way short. The Two Towers is far superior in nearly all departments. But chances of it getting and "proper" oscars is minescule.

In other news 8mile is wishy washy teen drama rubbish. Its basically the rap version of Karate Kid, but without Mr Miyagi.

Good grief.

You mean there's more to this movie? I though it was a half hour too long as it was. There was just far too much pointless blabbing which didn't do anything to the plot. Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy the movie but the ending was anti-climatic to say the least.

Who would you like to see? Colm Meaney? The guy who played Father Dougle? Megan from Casualty? The Fireman from Eastenders?

The film looked good, but the plot was non-existent; much like the movie titanic. I still enjoyed it though because of Daniel Day Lewis.

I don't have much knowledge of ye old American culture, but........I thought it was odd how the natives hated the Irish, and yet they loads of 'em in their gang....and also, the dead rabbits allowed a black bloke into their church and took him in, yet he got strung up by his own gang in the end!

Oh, and a niggle here.....remember when bill the butcher found out who Amsterdam really was? And recall how he got a flamin' hot poker pressed against his face? Well, strange how it left no scarring, or indeed a mark on his face a day or two later! He soon had his lovely complexion back.

I'd rate the film 5 out of 10...nowt special.

the black bloke got lynched by the mob, not his own gang who had other things on their mind at the time :P

also, leo did have a scar on his face when he first put the dead rabbit out, so i took it for granted that he'd have it for the rest, didn't check tho

and spoilers are annoying, saying lolz doesnt really diminish that

If you read a film review in any paper or mag it tells you far more about a film than what i did in my short paragraph...hardly a spoiler! U can hardly give away the plot as there isn't really one...its just a film with a good set, and one class character!

Also, I work part time at a retirement home to cop a feel of the drugged up elderly on my lunch break.

Fascinating, please tell me more.

Bah, i've caused a little flame war haven't I? Oh well. I'm not too bothered, I just now know the following -a black guy in the film gets killed, and Amsterdam (?) gets caught and branded. Sounds quite good actually. Is DiCaprio any good in the role of the main character? I've half dismissed him totally after Titanic, but would Scorsese work with him if he was hopeless? I doubt it. So, is he any good?
