View Full Version : quiet HS/HSF ...
Putting together a system for a mate, normal kind of top spec but the CPU is going to be a 1900+ athlonXP. One thing that was important though was a quiet CPU fan, i was wondering what suggestion you lot would have for a quiet HS and HSF combo would be best for that CPU. He wants to leave his PC on at night in his room and staying around mine he really didn't like the sound of my Delta 7000rpm lol. Watercooling is of course not an option, think the highest he can go is about 40.
get a xp 1700 tbred and wack the coolmaster heat pipe thingy - i think its fan is adjustable (somehting like 2k -> 3.5k rpm) and is generally just a bit ace.
thats like £25, but with those two u can clock the cpu to 1.9ghz which is just a bit ace?
alternativly you could buy an all copper heatsink (SLK 800 is one of the best) but thats like £33 from oc.co.uk - then u can wack a fan on of ur choice.

The Zalman Flower fan I used on mine was good and had a fan adjuster thingy which you could slow things down a bit.

Volcano 7+ with adjustable speed fan. Tis the mutts nutts. Takes my P4 2.2 up to 2.75 at +15% voltage with the fan on quiet settings. Stayed pretty cool considering.
It's one of the finest heatsinks I've seen - many many copper fins and the bass is machine lapped so well that you can literally see your reflection in it. I keep the fan on low setting and it's very decent.

results with a few hs / hsf including the volcano (http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=276)

Have to say that that's bizarre. I've had the Zalman running on a 1gig TBird at 1.2gig for ages now, voltage is standard, rock solid stable. And the 'reported' CPU temperature stays low (50ish).
Obviously not up to the job of cooling the faster ones.
Mad old world.
aye i was hopeing on seeing the 'you dont need a fan with me buddy' heat sinks, but didnt have much hope cos all the recommended heatsinks need fans also :O
ah well :O

I have an Alpha pal8045 coupled with a 80mm fan, variable control on front of case. My pc is pretty quiet seeing as i have 5 case fans, although it went considerably quite the other night when the connector for my cpu fan somehow disconnected itself. Only noticed cos the cpu temp suddenly went from 38 idle to 75
get a mobo with C.O.P ya silleh bugger :O

i do already goks, 75 degrees is fine for an athlon xp though
i thought the boards cut out at 70?!

Athlons are guaranteed up to something like 85 degrees from what I remember :)

nah, if they cut out at 70 u would get a fu<kload of reboots during the summer if you were putting major stress on ur pc, think my board is sset to cut out at something like 85 degrees.

In 5 years rekon we can use em to double up as a frying pan? Save students a bit of cash when things get a bit tight
50 / 70 / 85 deg C LMAO
35 full whack ere :E
aye, tbh i would be sh*tting myself if i looked at the stats and saw meh cpu running at those kinda heats....anything above 50 will have me scared :P

Farking hell.
My P4 2.2 @ 2.75ghz 1.725v is kept below 50C with my Volcano 7+ and LOWEST fan settings (so it's only just audible).
Maybe those AXPs run a lot hotter.

not too sure about that prodigy, i run my xp2700 at 2.36Ghz with fan on lowest setting at 40 degrees.
Alpha PAL8045 + 80mm fan
heat is dependant on oh so many factors:
Heat sink
fan
case
case cooling
current room temp
load
so to many things to say which is hotter unless ya done some tests :P would be interesting :O

Volcano's = noisey ****ers which dont sit on the cpu properly (I paid 21+VAT for one of these and it was terrible).
Got a retail xp2400+ over christmas and the heat sink/Fan is amazing, low profile fan which is reasonably quiet and i get a load temp of 34/35 degrees)
hmmm was thinking about buying one of them, but meh mate has twisted my arm and forced me to buy the SLK 800 with a decent but also silent fan
/me waves good bye to £50 :{

% of cpu power that is being utilised

load - 100% usage of cpu, this is when cpu gets hottest and will do so when running programs.
Playing daoc with 100+ people on screen gives me a good idea of how hot my cpu gets max :p.
LG, how easy was that Alpha PAL8045 to fit? I've had a few nightmare's recently with fitting bolt on heat sinks. Also, is it relatively straight forward to fit the fan on top?

was fairly easy to fit it, and the there is like a guide thing that goes over the top to make it easier to fit a fan to it.
