Ok my dads company has a lot of old computers (486s/p100s) nothing exciting but atm hes just throwing them out and smashing up the HDs.

I suggested he give them to a school or something(he works in inner london so there are bound to be a lot of underfunded schools etc..) does anyone know of an organisation/charity that would take them off his hands hes got about 20 atm but it does mean in the future his IT department will have somewher to throw old PCs rather than binning them?

The company I work for has tried it, and I've even tried selling stuff online as well. Problem is, everyone wants to use the latest software, even schools, so you'll have a hard time trying to get rid of them.

I think there are companies around that will donate them to Eastern Europe.

A couple of yrs ago schools were well up for this kind of thing, I installed a P60 network donated from a local university in a primary school around that time. With new government funding etc they all seem to have proper - if cheap networks with modern PC's. I've been involved with a few in my area, some go the way of renting and some buy it all, a couple I know of spent £25,000. Nothing major but pretty decent 30+ pc network with server.
A great idea though and as mentioned I'm sure there are charities that would be very grateful.

Well having spoken to a friend whos a head teacher at a local school it seems a lot of primary schools and preschools/playgroups are after these kind of PCs to either A) teach young children on who dont need uber Pcs or to B) Loan parents who dont have a computer them selves so they can help thier kids (not sure how it all works) but just in case anyone else gets a lot of older Pcs just phone local primary schools and see they aren't as well funded as a lot of people think :).

most major charities dont except electronic goods and schools wont take it directly off you for health and safety reasons i would expect.

On a high note - the computersforcharities link looks good :O

Health and safty isnt an issue with computers because every school has an ICT tech who does all the checking plus a lot of computers are laoned out to parents who dont have computers of thier own.
