Currently Wireplay is working on it's network along with the rest of FirstNet. To improve latency we need to find the source of the problem.

Could everybody please run trace's to: 62.105.80.1

To do this, type "tracert 62.105.80.1" into a DOS window (Start > Run > 'command').

Then copy and paste the result here.

Thank you for your help.

If you could post your TR's on the back of a postcard or a sealed-down envelope to pigwhistler@wireplay.co.uk it'll keep everything in one place and makes it easier to forward them onto the network guys to look at.

Incidently there were some network changes last night which should speed things up.

seems like you are going to have problems with the BT routing if it's 19/20 hops away, but I suppose most people would have guessed that.

Pop Culture Monkey - what the hell was the point of your trace? all it shows is the number of hops, your ping is down to your PC from the looks of things. And, if you were downloading at the time, you should take a trace when your line is (relatively) free.

If anyone needs Ping Plotter, go to www.pingplotter.com :) you can give a better trace that way as it allows you to save a visual account of the connection, taken over whatever period of time you like. Try 5 minutes, with 300 samples, 1 a second.

Ignore that dropped packet, my ISPs routing is less than desirable lately.

Also, I'm impressed by the small amount of hops. Second only to my ISPs internal game servers with 7 hops.

I wouldn't worry about Margret; it's a Cisco router and as part of it's DOS protection it is designed not to answer all pings so if you do the results are misleading.

TR's will help us plot where things are going wrong (spikes) but remember that that longer TR's don't necessarily mean longer ping times.

Thanks to your help so far on this, feedback good or bad on the service improvments will always be welcome.
Hopefully you will have noticed some improvment on the ping time this week.

There have been some major network changes over the last few days which should have improved things you guys.

The route into the game servers have been reduced.

Could you let me know how your pings have been affected?

Cheers

We've changed a few things with the Firstnet network which should be smoothing out the pings.

Let me know if you've noticed an improvement.

The changes happened last thursday.

12 hops really, hop 1 is through my network. And whats weirder is I seem to go to my ISP, back into my network then out to the net again, quite bizarre.

I've lost around 3 hops tho \o/

It would seem that the changes we made last week have caused problems with quite a few peoples pings.

We've identified a problem and will make the changes tomorrow morning.

Let me know if this improves things.

This thread is very important to us as it helps us improve things.

Therefore the more info you can supply the better.

Cheers

I got a 768 kbps adsl line with fastpath enabled.
Pings to german servers are around 15-30.

Thanks in advance for improving your servers for international users.

can you sort his ping so he stops moaning at me ^^^^^^

thanks

Not really at the mo sorry.

The focus has been on improving our UK connectivity.

If you're in the UK you can get a Wireplay/Firstnet aDSL or wDSL connection and be only 3 hops from the servers!!

I've seen pings as low as 8 :P

And besides his pings are in the high before his connection reaches the UK!

I would seriously consider getting FN wDSL, but I don't live in the north of England.

Aside from decent peering to the Wireplay servers I can't see any real advantage to get FN ADSL over Pipex ADSL.

Dash always the salesman!

The services are not restricted to the North of England.

If there is anyone interested in our DSL products let me know and I'll send them details.

Dear sirs or madams,
thats also a way of handling with international costumers.

A) My ping isnt high before i reach the uk ( I wouldn´t call 30 high)
and
B) Yes you can do something about it. Just change the routing -with me being part time assistent system adimistrator I know that a change of route is 1. not time intense and 2. not too expensive - and you everybody would be happy.
I know certain other people inside the uk who moan about bad ping to wp-servers and they are wondering why the concurent provider burstfire.net can offer better pings.
If you look carefully at the tracert results you clearly see where the problem lays: Mutliple routing inside the uk from one hub to the other so it finally reaches the target- the gs0.

Please try to work on that or give a better explanation, because you have to see it under the aspect of me pinging fine to every uk server but wireplay and i am not satisfied with an answer saying: you can get our product a, b, c which is only available inside the uk. If you dont think international most of the costumers will "f*** off" to providers like burstfire. And actually, i dont really want that (honestly).

Yours,

breath

Just out of interest what sort of part time assistent system administrator are you? do you work in an office or an isp?

Looking at your traces you enter the Wireplay network via Level3, the same way many (including myself do). It maybe worth getting in contact with your isp and asking if they will or do peer with Firstnet.

Also as Qube points out the pings inside the isp's networks you pass through before you hit the UK are high as well. Ask them to take a look at there internal routing.

Sorry Jez but routing is more complicated than that. If it wasn't everyone would have pings of 10 to any system.

We have no control over the routing of Telcos who yet don't peer with Firstnet/Wireplay.

We are always seeking to improve our network and arrange peering agreements with providers.

This way we can improve the route to our free service.

Otherwise I recommend our DSL products as you'll be connected to the same network that hosts Wireplay and thus have the best possible connection speed.

And if you also opt for one of our clan servers you can get a good deal and be connecting to superior hardware too.

Contact me for details.

Right, first of all thanks for your fast replies.
A) I am an assistent administrator off one of germanies leading public relations companies. @ breath [ so thats an office to be direct ]
I can understand that you say it is not you producing or causing the bad ping / lag but the routing, and now the question to be is, why can providers like burstfire avoid that.
I would like not to get an answer saying it is not that easy or "you can get one of our dsl accounts.." but a direct statement.
Or don´t you know what that causes ?

And yes, I have been speaking to my ISP. (german telecom, also known as t-online).
In general the routing to any country and also uk is superb but wireplay. I think, well I am convinced the bottle neck is not my isp.
So if you can´t change anything I think i got to accept that - but that still leaves the question why burstfire dont got those probs.
Honestly I dont think they are better... So please try to explain that issue.

Oh and again: My ping is not high before I enter wp / leave my network.

Burstfire it doesnt jump.

and yes, I have been speaking to my ISP. (german telecom, also known as t-online).

Do they have a peer with Firstnet/Wireplay?

It also appears that t-online have a peer with Claranet who have a peer with Burstfires network, so you get a direct connection to them. Hence the non 'jumpyness'

The difference is down to peering which can cost serious money.

We're in discussions with numerous Telcos to set up peering. BT for example want a fortune which at the moment we can't afford.

Your ping is at 63ms as soon as it hits London and is still at 63 when you hit the server so I don't think we're too bad.

We'll do everything we can to ensure the best connection but money is limited when providing a totally free service.

When more people start signing up for connectivity or hosting then we'll have the capital to improve things further.

If anyone is interested in any of our products then let me know. Wireplay is a part of Firstnet and thus can offer a huge range of services.
