RQ3 in an AQ2 forum, yip...lol The reason is we have the opportunity of an interview with the RQ3 team and I thought it would be cool to get ideas and questions from the old skoolers of the AQ2 scene... So if you havn't downloaded RQ3 already do so ..here (http://static.hugi.is/games/quake3/RQ3/ReactionQuake3-v3.0-Full.exe) :P Then give it a whirl and give us your impressions..!

All questions are cool, except for the 'Are you a boxers man or briefs?!'

I draw the line there, ask them yourselves in #reactionquake3 :)

So if you have a burning question to ask the team post here..

Being a new player to AQ I can sort of look at it with an unbias point of view..

I started playing AQ2 about 3 weeks ago, loved it good fun. Then I started on RQ3 and I have to say the whole experience is better.

Better Graphics, Sounds, etc etc.. Game play is superb, with the remakes of the old maps done in such a way that it compliments the old maps in a Q3 enviroment..IMO. A lot of time and effort went into making sure the AQ2 style of fun and gameplay remained, this has been faithfully redone for the Q3 engine and what a nice transition it has made, look forward to getting my a** wooped more often than not...lol

Most of the realy good players seem to be old hands with AQ2 anyway... So if anything the old schoolers should be getting in there, teaching, showing and owning. Embrace the new with its quirks and whole batch of annoying little habits...

If the team could try to promote the 'Action' side of the mod better.. ie Bruce Willis meets Max Payne meets The Matrix more of a slant to the game, but done in a way so as to not take itself too seriously.. a la Blues Brothers :) Then I think it would be a good start. If its an Action based mod with a movies slant, where are all these RQ3 Action Movies?

I call upon the old hands of AQ2, to resolve your differences with the Q3 engine, go forth with your knowledge of double super, uber jumps and tricks. Make us a TDM demo that would make Rambo cry! Then we can get it over to *.avi. Trick jump demos...2 seconds clips... Would be a real bonus!

Go on its your chance to be a Movie Star!

If that hasn't convinced you then I dunno what will!

I feel the BBQ calling!!!!!!!!!!

RQ3 is good

but in m opinion its just a worse version of AQ2 (mainly because i prefer the Q2 engine to the Q3 engine)

...I can appreciate that totaly, I'm not looking forward to the transition from Q3 to Q4 when it comes, incase I just can't get on with it.

Anyways me going on about RQ3 demos, turns out a bloke over at the Swedish RQ3 site has posted a demo.

Must add my Swiss knowledge extends about as far as that sickly cheese in a Bacon Double Swiss from BK's. So all I have are these few English words to go by. Den nya heter 'The Return of Urban3'. So dont blame me if it features people with long hair who like to show the neigbours around their sauna! One at a time..rofl :P

its a 100meg *.avi

Sang it here (http://jaktmarkerna.com/demoteam/rq3/The_Return_Of_Urban3_modem.rar)

Is there actually any "public" UK servers running the latest version yet? As thats the best way for people to gauge the changes and additions to this latest version to formulate their opinions, etc about it. An interview is all well and nice but support for the mod through servers and local downloads of files should be 1st on the list or at least a timescale mentioned so one knows things are going to be done.

Didn't you know theres actually an UK mirror (ftp://ftp.blueyonder.co.uk/store2/ftp.planetquake3.net/modifications/reactionquake3/) for the files?

I thought the interview at the modportal (http://www.modportal.net/index.php?artikkelid=189&back=1) was somewhat interesting to read myself?

and Black Monk recently said for example:

You can call it "Susan" for all we care. But the "Action" name is a trademark of Akimbo Team Productions, LLC. So unless we get their blessing or something, we cannot use "Action" in the name. Since they are currently making Action Unreal Tournament 2003, I think it will be unlikely that they would give the name to someone competing in the same generation of game engines with a similar concept behind the mod.

For those who are hoping for a Q4/D3 port of Reaction, uh, we're honestly not planning on that. We feel that the changes will be significant enough that an Action-esque game won't really fit in too well. In addition, the synchronous netcode has us all swearing up a storm. We certainly understand Carmack's reasoning behind it (several RQ3 team members heard him talk at QCon2002 and saw demonstrations of the D3 toolset) but... gah.

You think RQ3 is not enough like AQ2 already? Reaction Doom 3 or Reaction Quake 4 will be even more of a disappointment in that regard. We're already getting complaints that our models are too pretty and our maps are "different." What, you think throwing in per-polygon hit detection, higher system requirements, and even MORE realistic sound and lighting will make die-hard AQ2 fans any happier? I mean, look at C4 here. He's complaining about the sound in RQ3 as compared to AQ2. Hey, Doom 3 is being made with an emphasis on realistic sound (among other things). It'll be WORSE in Doom 3, sound-wise, when comparing it to AQ2. If ya can't get over the sound differences between RQ3 and AQ2, porting Reaction to Doom 3 or Quake 4 is a surefire failure.

People said they wanted an Action Quake 3. People who tried AHL and didn't like it said they were expecting AQ2 with better graphics and stuff and gee, why didn't the ATeam port AQ2 to the Q3 engine? RQ3 is basically what people had been asking for for YEARS. And, surprise surprise, people complain that it's not exactly like AQ2.

You're advocating that we should once again attempt to replicate AQ2--a free mod that can be played online with the free Q2 Demo. You know, get people to BUY a game with online cdkey/serial authentication and built-in anti-cheating. You know that PB will most likely be integral to D3 and Q4, right? This has largely not worked with RQ3. People don't want to buy the game, people don't like PB, etc.

You can claim that we're late to the scene with RQ3. I'll grant you that. But there's more to it than that. PR, certainly, and needing to actually BUY a game to play it online is a large factor for many people as well, sad to say. In addition, people are far more fickle nowadays. Back in AQ2's heyday there were maybe 10 mods for various games that were of the same level of quality. Nowadays "realism mods" are a dime a dozen. Many of the current online players have never heard of AQ2. They think it's a rip-off of CS if you show it to them.

Being "first" to Quake 4 or Doom 3 won't help us as much as I think you think it will. People just aren't as interested in "Action" anymore. They like the trappings of the old game due to nostalgia. RQ3, a recreation of their old fun game, doesn't have the memories associated with it that AQ2 does--no matter how hard we try, we can never provide that.

I think people are doing a fair amount of projecting onto RQ3. They all want it to be something special to them in a different way. Hey, RQ3's fun on its own, I think. We cannot recreate AQ2 exactly nor are we trying. And graphical and audio improvements are seen as a step backwards by some people. And those very same people claim that we'll be able to do better with Quake 4 and Doom 3 for some reason--if anything, the engines will by their very nature be even farther removed from AQ2's overall feel and gameplay.

When you ask us to port Reaction to SOF2 or Quake 4, ask what you want from us. We've tried to recreate AQ2 with technological improvements. That's EXACTLY what SOF2 or Quake 4 will give you, too. If you don't like the technological improvements because they force certain differences between Reaction and AQ2, well, you probably won't like Reaction ported to SOF2 or Quake 4 or whatnot. Ask what you yourself want. We were starry-eyed about the possibilities that Quake 4 would offer should we port Reaction there, but the fans who currently dislike Reaction would continue to dislike it on a new engine. I guess all we'd be able to do would be to make an early release and hope that getting a mod out "first" means "more players and popularity."

Should we take a gamble just for that? Should we make that investment? We've already put 2+ years into RQ3, should we throw that away and work on RQ4? We don't have the resources to do both.

Anyway, it's food for thought.

Well about 80% of the download is the map pak I think. I can understand why they done it like that for neatness, pure settings, etc. The only practical solution would be to do like some of the other Q3 mod peeps have done and is to offer a version that has been chopped into smaller chunks with a "file-splitter" [ I think Q3F done that at one piont ]. That way you could offer x number of smaller downloads which peeps can re-integrate at the other end.

Perhaps its an option that WP could offer as an alternate solution themselves and offer both a file-split & full version, when and if they offer local downloads of files.

I immediately 'got my coat' as it were when I read the interview how do you better that!?

Think i'm gonna have to rely on shock value to bring notice to this piece of literary genius by discretely slipping in the 'pants or briefs question...!'

Id ask if they plan to expand the 'action' theme beyond the AQ2 weapon and map bounds, and if they have any cool 'gimmicks' planned for future releases.
