I've been testing out some new hacks this evening.

The first one I've added should make IRC users feel at home :E

/me <message>

For example if you type

/me jumps

you will get the following happening

/me jumps

enjoy

The quick reply box blows.

Still, nice to see we've finally got asterisks censoring 'swear words' (And about two dozen totally legitimate words that come up frequently in conversation) - And it's only taken a year and a half.

The new swear filter system is completely poor.

Schmoleys coding of the last one was amazing, no need to remove it. The new system is so easy to bypass its not even funny.

Don't fix things that don't need fixing imo.

The version of vBulletin was replaced with a new one... ive still to add in stuff like schmoleys swear filter... but due to me having food poisoning it maybe a few days before i can get around to do it

Reality
27-05-2003, 21:02
oh please leave it as it is - that swear filter was fun for the first few days then just fecking annoying.

Even better if it could be mostly turned off as theres less reason than ever for having it now...

StarMonkey
27-05-2003, 22:49
If I poison your food some more, will you not add that swear filter again :D

Nor
27-05-2003, 23:50
I'm with Reality and SM, not with Reality in a sexual way though.

It was probably the most annoying feature on this forum I found. I'd much rather see a swear filter that replaced words with constants. Like f*ck with fluff or c*nt with kebab or w*anker with spanker. You hide the obscenity but still get the jist of the sentence :)

Dash

To be honest you can usually get the idea from ****.

Bob, why don't you go **** yourself, and while your at it you mother ******* pile of ****.....

I think you all get the idea behind that. There is no need to swear anyway, and as gaming is something which appeals to all ages we should do our best to make it harder for people to swear by mistake.

Hey, I ain't complaining. Whats the worst that could happen, people might post more? ;)

Avatars would be good, how would they be approved though for being suitable or not?

Reality

either a preseleted list which vb supports - or addyour own and mod after like with posting.

There seems to me more super mod/admins types than ever so shouldn't be a problem.

its not a hack of sorts but is it possible to make the reply textbox wider on mozilla (prolly opera too) as its really thin compared to IE. I thought vbulletin did it so different browsers got different textbox widths but obviously not :(

So you replace it with a worse one?

In fairness to the old one, despite the random effeminate words being bloody annoying, it was a real bitch to get around, like spaces didnt work etc, and some other letters and things didn't either.

The new one doesn't even pick up things like f*cker, or f*cking, or F*cktacles, or f*cktacular.

See the point?

[COMIX]VaMpIrE

FYI it wasn't the sware filter that wasn't working it was the forums
the old sware filter is the mutz nuts
most of us got that but ....

Yes, but 'in fairness' to the one we have now, at least you can type phrases like (for example) 'He's hit rock bottom' without the bloody thing thinking you're cussing and totally ****ing up your sentence.

Monie
10-06-2003, 00:09
Yes i appreciate that, but i'm sure there's a happy medium. The old one was good, except for problems like that, and the fact that the most ridiculous things werre banned, such as arse, ass, bitch.

Now you can get away with anything short of F**K, S**T, C**T, from what i can gather. including anything with those included in them, such as f**ktacles.

I'd take the old one with its flaws over this one which is pretty pointless. Surely modifying the old one was a better option? Change 'flibbyflobby' for f***, and edit it a tad?

Refugee
10-06-2003, 00:12
Why's that horrible "Everyone's browsing" thing there? I don't care, and it gets annoying on "busy" forums where there's more than one man and his chimp browsing.

Reality
10-06-2003, 19:06
it matters that much?

If you get round it you get round it, if you don't you don't.

Personally I couldn't give a **** if anyone swares on here these days - its not like theres a company's image with children to protect anymore.... Unless Firstnet are going to be aiming to supply kids with high speed pipes and servers....

If it does matter that much (to the users and firstnet) then the replacement variables options that VB has offer far more scope for replacing words than the sware filter...

I think a support group has been set up for people that were upset by the sudden change in smilie code.

Easileigh
20-06-2003, 13:50
yes that's it, make light of the situation, not like it actually MATTERS what your users think, does it?

[COMIX]VaMpIrE
20-06-2003, 14:16
isnt this a tad ott for one single smilie change....

breath
20-06-2003, 14:22
Easileigh your the first person to pass comment on the change of smilie code since it was done over a month ago. So i am asuming that either everyone else is happy with it or hasn't noticed.

Norphys reasons for suggesting the change were very good. There have been alot of good suggestions for things to be changed recently and these have been backed up with very good reasons.

I am very open to suggestions as to what we could do to improve/add/change on these forums to make them more user friendly to everyone. Just let me know and I'll investigate it. :E

Anyone else got the problem of clicking on the Go button next to forum jump instead of the submit reply button?

Starting to get annoyed typing out a long reply and then realise that I've only gone and pressed the wrong sodding button.

Please move it above the quick reply box and save my sanity.

I suppose the layout confuses me a little. After typing in a reply, my brain sometimes assumes that the reply is posted and I automatically click the Go button instead. Suppose its a bit like some people who click on the post reply button instead of using the quick reply box.

Possible I'm the only person that does it on a regular basis so ignore my whining.
