View Full Version : Avatars

After a couple of months of testing and settling in the new forums software we have now been able to turn our attention to avatars. As you may or may not know these are currently only available to moderators and officals.

What we need to know is the communities feelings and thoughts on extending the use of avatars to everyone.

There is a poll above to cast your vote on either yes or no to avatars. Also as much feedback as possible would be appreciated.

It's worth noting that Avatars can be disabled in the user cp if anyone really doesn't want to see them.

Good point there Ronaldo

I voted yes, but the main thing I like to know is whether the Avatars will be pre-defined or user specific.

Personally I see avatars as a pointless extra to bog down these forums.

But then again, I'm not a general fan of forums, I prefer Usenet.

moderators already have 'special powers' *cough* but i think avatars should be available to everyone. :)

Tiger

Hmm I think they should be enabled but only if their going to be user-specific as i suggested in a different post. I don't think have 20 avatars as a selection would be worth anything at all..

Breath can you post up an announcement for the whole forum to see? Wireplay stuff forum does not get much traffic.

I reckon yes, but user specific, otherwise you'll ge things as shown above... *cough* Goat Sex *end cough*

FiRe
02-07-2003, 22:44
Or maybe an avatar depicting your post count? :O

Varsh
03-07-2003, 01:40
Errr....WTF, post counter avatar o_O
Nah go for the good 'ol fashioned "off-site" linking avatars :)
Seeing that there's loads of space on the left, could always have them nice and big too, but also, if it's possible, limit the filesize of the avatar? Or perhaps just limit the width/height of it, then they're forced to have a small filesize. Hmmm, I sense some evil coming along

why dont you do smiliar to other forums and only allow an avater when a user has posted more than say 50 times.

an avatar is a small picture you can put with your name in certain forums. up to now, only moderators and officials can put up avatars on wp forums. they are still testing the avatar system i suppose.

this thread has been advertised on a lot of wp forums, therefor a lot of ppl you dont know are replying in it.
i, myself, am from the JK2 community.

I see avatars as a non-problem because you can just turn them off anyway.

I prefer non-trigger happy admins who ban people for absolutely no reason but we can't always get what we want eh?

Whether they are displayed locally or not, they will still have an effect on the database and the server, especially if they are stored on the server and not links.

I'm guessing that's a dig at something or someone, no idea what though.

Avatars are a waste of my precious bandwidth, some of us are still connecting at 40kbps or less and signitures and or avatars with pictures just annoy me as they take extra time to load.

On another note I prefer the clean stylish layout of the WP forums without the random array of pictures slapped on the side and bottom of every post.

NO TO AVATARS

mr_grumpy_man

You can turn them off...

On reflection, given you have the option to see them or not and the default is off why not just do it? People can decide themselves and there's no need for Dash to get his knickers in a twist about the whole idea.

I think that avatars will be fine but only if some sort of control is put in place to prevent Wireplay moderators from smiley spamming, as I can't handle the download time.

Exhibit A (http://forums.wireplay.co.uk/showthread.php3?s=&threadid=292523)

I'd say yes only if they didn't affect forum speeds for those of us who won't use them. I voted no though because they always look so utterly cheesy and are a waste of time and bandwidth.

Next thing you know it'll be img code allowed in siggies with poster sized images appearing. I dunno, kids these days :P

back on topic - i think avatars are good - providing that there is the option not to view them for those people on slower connections

I say yes, BUT limit them to 50x50 pixels or something, and a filesize of 5k.

chosen_one
04-07-2003, 18:23
What's the point in that? 50x50 and 5k is so small that we might has well not have them at all in my opinion. Best off going for something nearer 80x80 and 10k I reckon.

-BIG AL-

As long as there is a sensable filesize limit i see no problem.

avatars yes only if u can turn em off in cp, they dont really slow down the forums anyhow.

Voted yes, all other forums have them and if your connection can't handle the overwhelming girth of a 5kb image, you can um just turn them off.

id rather nobody had them, but then again id rather everyone had them than a select random few

MuNkEy
07-07-2003, 16:50
Maybe you could have it just a smilie in the avatar nothing more. You choose from a huger list than you have now. Wouldn't really stack make the forums load slower.

I voted yes btw.

[ZakalwE]

Well this wins points for the "smallest issue : biggest discussion ratio" award.

I think you should just turn them off, a 5k picture loads in about half a second and i connect at 45.2kbs, if anyone connects at 14.4kbs then they damn well turn them off or buy a 56k modem for about 20 pounds.

Democracy sucks btw. :bomb: :bomb:

Tiger
08-07-2003, 00:22
Sorry but i wouldn't mind knowing the tiny percentage of internet users viewing a GSP website connecting at 14.4k - think about what your saying buddy..

The thing is either everyone should have them or no-one. Another issue is Custom Titles.. Fair enough having people with Custom Titles in posts, the you know who's important, but having Avatars in Profiles is a bit of a cheek imho. Don't wanna bring the forum into disrepute and lose friends over these comments btw, i just feel upset that i've been here and done so much for the community and was once rewarded with a Title for hard work in my (now deceased) community, and now have nothing, not even an 'experience advantage' in Applications for Admin jobs, after years of effort, because most CL's are much 'newer than me' :/
