can you play it online with 56k, how does it work, do you have an account on the server and each time you log in you appear at the place you logged out and the more you play the more money and items you can gather up etc like everquest, ultima online and them type of games.
Erm, You can play it online with a 56k modem yes (but make sure nothing else is running in the background (like kazaa))
Basically you connect to a server, create a player on the server and start playing. When you dock at a station and leave, you return to that same place (and if you get disconnected you return to somewhere near the point in space u were at (depending on how often the server saves stuff))
It is a very good game. I'm not a fan of RPG's, but I was a fan of Elite, so this is why I tried it.
If you are still uncertain you can download a demo (http://download.microsoft.com/download/7/8/4/784d9eb8-64f7-45b6-b5ae-8832c007ac6b/freelancer_demo.exe) to try out. It provides the first few single player story missions, but still gives you the complete freedom of the starting system (there are about 45 systems if memory serves).
There are also a lot of details on the Microsoft Freelancer website (http://www.microsoft.com/games/freelancer).
HTH HAND
It is a good game, im on 56k also and as smock said as long as your set up right with nothing daft in the background it runs pretty good :).
Fights online can get hairy at times with npcs jolting about but really it just adds more challenge which i kinda enjoy ;)
Fights when the server lags is just annoying. The aiming system no longer works and you over or under shoot.
Only way to get ships is on a head-to-head.
Aye, as said in previous posts, have nothing running in the background, and your TCP/IP settings done correctly also helps ;)
Basically, like the server, the client processes most stuff its own side side, and thus does not require a great deal of bandwidth, around 4-5Kb/s at most becuase minimal information is transmitted either way
Ah but thats because you a PKer at heart :P

ah thanks, all sounds good.
dash: i downloaded frontier elite 2 and the sequel a couple of days ago myself, but i need alot more erm, conventional memory i think it is in dos mode for both of them to work and i couldnt really be bothered yet to make a startup disk to try and free up that memory, thats kinda how i ended up looking at freelancer cause both of them didnt work.
Yer they can be a biatch to get running under latest OS. Privateer 1/2 may work though, and they are really more like this game than elite(and it's variations) but you can't play those online :D
Nah, Elite 2 rocked
Elite 3 was naff.
