An exert from an email sent to me :-
We have been contacted by at least eight customers this morning who suspected they had lightning strike related problems with their computers after yesterdays storms. After some initial investigation it turns out there was a new worm virus released yesterday called MSBLAST although it has many other aliases.
Watch out for a system error message with red cross in the corner. Error message has a 30 second timer on it and shuts your PC down. Slow broadband connection speeds are also symptomatic of an infection in this case.
Various versions of the Windows operating system are affected but mainly Win2k and XP machines.
There is a vulnerablility patch available from windowsupdate.com if you haven't been infected already. This has been out for at least a month and will stop your PC from becoming infected.
Latest virus signatures released today will detect and cure the infection.
Also there is free cleanup utility available on the Computer Associates website which can be found at:
http://www3.ca.com/virusinfo/virus.aspx?ID=36265
For more information either read the encylopedia entry on the web site or have a look at the BBC news article relating to the infection at: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/3143625.stm
