The local video and DVD shop down the road has a rather spinkee offer of 5 DVDs for a week for a fiver. So as our house is taking advantage of that a lot of late I was wondering what suggestions people had for films to see. :)
Just about to pop out and return last weeks five now, which were:
The Green Mile
About A Boy
Amelie
MIB2
and Castaway
All were good, barring Castaway which I just found dull
So I demand reccomendations for our next visit, please. :E

Well... I have no idea what to recommend since I have no idea what is and isn't out to rent on DVD at the current time. As for the last batch we've got The Green Mile and Castaway on DVD (well.. I say we've got it... I mean me dad has) and I have to agree with you on Castaway, Green Mile w00ns tho.
So all in all this post is pointless.. but hey :p
chicago - superb
blade2 - far better than 1 and doesent take itself seriously at all, therefore a brilliant action flick with highly polished visuals from a director who knows his stuff.
project a - jackie chan, sammo hung, yuen biao...quite frankly, you will not find a better martial arts flick...note: see the subs as the dub is truly awful (all dubs suck anyway).
charlie's angels - arf arf :naughty:
grosse point blank - john cusack as the most cynical assassin i'ver see. 'nuff said. :D

Aswell as Road to Perdition I told you about yesterday on MSN ;) ... Jurassic Park 3 I saw 3 times and thought was really good, bearing in mind 2nd sequels are usually rank, Final Destination 1 and 2 are both worth the rent :D

I have to say action movies don't interest me that much, but the last one sounds good :)
[edit - just pointing out this was addressed to Khaz and not Mandy]
if not an action movie fan then get project a anyway, it's not an action movie in the hollywood sense....it's funny as hell to.
you can skip blade2 then...but definitely get grosse point blank....oh yes..
CITY OF GOD!!! GET EEEEEEEEEET!!
you will not see a better movie this year...guaranteed.

I shall certainly look for both of those.
Trouble is the DVD shop though cheap is quite small, so they might not have all the films I seek ;(

You gotta get The Two Towers obviously! Fantastic film, also i second Khaz, City of God is amazing and you wont see a better film. Also Donnie Darko also extremely good. Hope that helps :)

I've seen Donnie Darko before, but don't remember much of it because it was during the showing that I got together with my girlfriend, heh. :)
But she's seen it twice now and I don't think she'll want to see it again ;)
Two towers is LOTR, right? Think I'll pass - not really my bag. :)

Are you still talking about the film there or something else? :P

Is your little shop likely to have foreign classics, like Cinema Paradiso or La Gloire de Mon Pere ?
(yes you have to read the words, but the gf will like them)
The Ring!!!!
The secret to this film is to have 2 bottles of champers or vino, put the room in total darkness except for a couple of candles, then snuggle up with your honey and shat yourself towards the end of the film.
...ok obviously the last part may shatter the romantic mood but feck me, I haven't enjoyed a horror film so much since Blair Witch.
Other than that, I'd say try "What Women Want" bit of a chick flick but still enough male humour in it as well to keep you interested.
Phone Booth - shortish film but if you're one of those people who can get totally absorbed in to a film, it's possibly worth it.
Other than that, if you feel you're not in to action films maybe you should get yourself down to the pink quarter and rent some boy-on-boy films ya freak :D

slam - when you mentioned the ring i hope you mentioned the original japanese films and not the hollywood remakes?
Havent seen the American version of the ring but the japanese one seems overrated, I would have been more scared if I had turned my tv off and stared into the chilling depths of the black screen...
although that can be quite scary ;(
seriously though, what part of the movie is meant to be scary? it was all pretty predictable and boring.
its not like its not my kinda of movie either, I'm into japanese movies and psychological horror type stuff.
ah well :/
the first ring film is ok...it's the sequel that's superb...
a ring 2 was made...rather being a straight sequel it was essentially a reworking of the ring storyline and was a much better film...and i generally don't like remakes anyway, yet to see a remake which is better than the original.

To me: City Of God is indeed amazing. Cinema Paradiso is an all time classic (the directors cut) Donnie Darko I like a lot. The Ring films - Japanese is far superior to the remake - didnt reckon much to either Ring 2 or 0. I thought Chicago was absolute boring toss. Grosse Pointe Blank is fantastic. Phone Booth is fairly decent until the end - pretty forgettable.
errr i presume youre looking for contemporary stuff. Dont really rent but i believe that Bowling for Columbine is out here now (not with all the nifty features on the r1 version though) but its essential viewing - hilarious, chilling, touching and relevant - it has to be seen.
Other than that i recommend Polanski's The Pianist - gripping viewing, although a long film i found it flew by
Also look out for the recently released Once Upon A Time In America dvd - with newly restored footage. Its one of the greatest films of all time (although the runtime of just under 4 hrs may be a little offputting)
my, oh my.
look who crawled back. :)
long time no see travis.
and chicago is not toss....agreed on bowling for columbine.
read his book - stupid white men? chapter 3 --> "Dear George"
hilarious. :D

yeah long time no see. i just thought id show my face, i wont be staying :) only got the internet until tomorrow night
yeah ive read stupid white men, downsize this and adventures in a tv nation. the guy is fantastic - i also recommend Roger & Me which is now available on r1 dvd.
I have to admit im in the minority on my opinion on Chicago.
phone booth - pretty good until the end like trav said. i won't give away too much but..... i dunno... he just should of.... bah i can't say anything without giving it away.
catch me if you can - pretty entertaining, good performances all round pretty much.
daredevil - tosh
blade 2 - tosh
adaptation - very good, funny.
the ring - not seen but the original is great so the remake will suck.
punch drunk love - strange but pretty good. weird plot. oddly good performance from sandler and emily watson is great as always.
punch drunk love!
i loved that film! :D
it's so freaking bizarre it fits in right with my twisted head...:)
yeah, i loved it.
its a hard thing to figure out whether its odd cos of the plot/style or that i'm odd cos i understood it.

what on earth possessed you to get serendipity and the shipping news??
tghe former a john cusack film which he probably did to make money for his independent film - Max (not seen it yet though...really wanna) - and the latter is just ZZZZZZZZ despite a first rate cast.
