View Full Version : Better peering?

The big news in the IT world today is that GXN have aquired Pipex, and renamed themselves to Pipex.

So? Well, the more observant people will have noticed that GXN also aquired FirstNet (the people who own Wireplay) a month of so ago.

Which all ties together. What do we have in store? Well why not just sit back and watch.

But for those who want to speculate and stuff look at it this way.

GXN is a level 1 provider, running a nice big load of network cables all over the country, something in the lines of:
http://www.gxn.net/about/Network%20Map.pdf

Pipex is one of the UK's largest broadband ISP's, and has been established for aeons, winning award after award for best ISP and so on. So lets add:
http://www.pipex.net/network/pipex/

And we can also add in FirstNet's wireless broadband network.

Which means we can hope to see some rather sweet peering and pings in the future.

This is your place to rant, rave, plot, conspiracise, panic, etc over the future of Wireplay.

Please note, I am not posting this in a professional capacity, so do not take anything that I say as definate. You can find more information on various web sites, such as The Register (http://www.theregister.co.uk/) and GXN (http://www.gxn.net/investors/rns_news.shtml). An official statement will be posted to the Wireplay front page (http://www.wireplay.co.uk/) when we get round to making one. Until then, consider this hearsay.

Regards,

Dash.

Looks one of the more positive things to happen to Wireplay in years.

I'm on Pipex, it's really good, and they do pay attention to things like games. Just before FirstNet took over from ArenaTek Pipex put in custom peerings especially for gaming, resulting in latencies of 15ms to places like Jolt.

Alas we were just a little too late in getting up on our knees from the take over to get in and get custom peering.

Plus the Managing Director of Pipex said earlier this year (or late last year) that he was interested in having talks with GSP's to provide gaming services for customers. As we haven't seen any game servers yet this might be _very_ good news for us. Although this is all speculation from the view of a Pipex customer :)

what kind of time scale would we likely to see the Wireplay network onto the new peering?

I couldn't say at the moment. Even if we don't get any "special" routing specifically for us, we will still be giving everybody a run for their money.

As I said, GXN is a tier 1 provider, plus we already have some scheduled improvements which should be coming online very soon.

This should give us a much required boost up the old server listing latency wise. As there will be a significant number of direct connections to GXN. From GXN's statements they have a lot of interest in the datacentre which Wireplay has, so I expect we will have plenty of high speed connections to a variety of exchanges and ISP's.

Don't get too worked up though, these are major changes in the UK's Internet structure, they won't happen over night.

We've upgraded to china cups.

Although there is debate if this will stop everything from working. But I mean, come off it, they look much nicer.

And you can put them in the dish washer without fear of melting.
