I have been looking forward to the new networks for a while hoping to have "uber" low pings as my ISP is Pipex which you should all know is the same ISP as wireplay.
once the counter strike servers were back on I was on them within an hour as discovered high pings of 50 - 60+ but I was told that this was due to network updates and its using the bandwidth, I though fair enough. I tryed again a few days later and still 40 - 50, the wireplay servers don’t even show up with a fileter of <50.
I tryed a tracert on the IP given in another topic:
quote:

Trace complete

While it has 31 ms this does not show in game. I was informed by breath and fire that the roughing goes though uu.net which is b0rked and that I should ask for an regrade to my service which should get me lower pings.

I first I thought this would be great and that it would make most servers ping lower... but I cba to phone up. Later in the week my dad emailed pipex and received an email back;
quote:

What DNS servers are you using? Try specifying the following DNS servers in
your TCP/IP properties:

158.43.240.4
158.43.240.3

Also try running a speed test at the following website:

http://betatest.pipex.net/headers/stest1.htm

To which we tryed and made a small difference, fire was unimpressed and couldn't see what this would do and again said "JUST PHONE UP". My dad sent another email with new tracert which was similar as well as a speed test with the changes which shows a small improvement. again the wireplay servers were still quite high compared to other serves which aren’t on pipex. Another email was sent back;
quote:

A ping of 31ms is not a high ping, they are incorrect here, the ping will
depend on the server replying and obviously the distance you are from this
server, you are connecting to a server outside the UK therefore your ping
times are very unlikely to be as low as 15ms. Your connection speed into the
PIPEX network is without fault as you can see you are getting the expected
ADSL speed judging by the tests you have run; however please disconnect the
rest of your network as this will give lower speeds when running pings and
speed tests.

Which are the tracert and not the ping in game.

is this guy at pipex bs or not?

DNs servers have nothing to do with the route you take, for god sake ring them up to regrade your connection, stop mucking about with e-mails, it seems their e-mail department doesn't have a clue

You are on a managed ADSL connection like myself. Uunet, GXN and Wireplay are all part of the PIPEX network.

The connection you are on uses a different main pipe than everybody else and is not peered well for gaming. If you want to knock 15ms off your connection then regrade.

Personally I'm happy with 30ms.

Please note that your ping in game will always be higher as when you use a dos ping etc you are only sending 32 bytes, instead of the few kilobytes you send in a game.

Yes, but I don't control the people they hire who aren't capable of doing their job ;)

I'll poke Qube about it

Tell them that you need it doing in order to use Wireplay. If they are confused over that then let us know and we'll try and do something about it

I'll see what I can do to improve things.

Eventually all the different networks that form PIPEX will be directly linked so no matter what legacy connection you have. In the mean time you should be connected to the one that performs the best.

no news then?

Yes, if you speak to any PIPEX support people who don't know about WP point them in my direction; (Matthew Stringer (matthew.stringer@pipex.net) - Leeds office).

I've spoken to the technical managers and informed them of the requirements so if you call them again you shouldn't run into problems.

However once we alter the peering with LINX your routing should be fixed without the need to regrade.
