Our Roleplay Ethic
While Untold Tales of Tolkien II can be rightly thought of as a ‘group adventure’ server, or a ‘Tolkien-theme’ server, its creators and community prize above all other qualities that it is a premium *roleplay* server. Indeed, it is here that many very good roleplayers meet to truly immerse themselves in the characters they’ve created, and play them as authentically as they possibly can. New players will want to be especially respectful of the very high roleplaying standards that the server promotes, appreciating that the world has been especially tailored to serve those particular interests.
New players often think that the cornerstone of fine roleplaying is a back-story… some exotic tale that makes their character special and interesting. While giving your character some concrete context in the Middle Earth setting is helpful, we caution new players against the temptation to reach for the extremes. The most successful roleplayers start with characters that are fairly typical in most respects. Not the direct descendants from kings. Not one-of-a-kind savants separated from parents at birth and raised by some unlikely race halfway across Arda. Such back-stories too easily overshadow what’s really important to the roleplaying ethic here — compromising the ability of in-game words and actions to ultimately define the character as well-played.
Another sorry mistake is made when new players try to tip the game engine’s odds in their favour by choosing ability scores that over-emphasize a few traits at the expense of others. Unreasonably sacrificing charisma or wisdom in favor of strength or dexterity, for example, leave one once again with a character woefully imbalanced and unduly defined by these attributes — they ultimately eclipse the player's ability to shape their character through their interaction with others, which is most esteemed. As a general principle, humanoid races (men, elves, dwarves, and hobbits) should very carefully avoid sub-average ability scores (below 10) as these almost always eventually become tiresome roleplaying liabilities, rather than assets, despite what new players might think.
In feat and skill selection, in manner of dress, in choice of weapons (if any!), and in all other dimensions of the game, consider the roleplaying implications above all others. Walk from place to place, running only as your character would — in short bursts where speed was essential. Stay in character whenever possible, even when sizing up the suitability of others to join in your party, or in considering tactics by which to overcome an obstacle. Enjoy every moment of every level of your character. They pass by quickly enough, and epic characters with poor roleplaying foundations are not respected more than the least who travel Arda.
And learn from those whose experience can help. Be open to suggestions, and leave past experiences behind. If an action seems questionable — especially if you find yourself having to conjure elaborate roleplaying justifications for an action — avoid it. The greatest pleasure comes from playing this server as it was designed to be played, not in “beating” it by stretching the rules with a character that tests its limits.
You’ll find few more rewarding roleplay game experiences anywhere.
Good luck, and good hunting!
