I'll make this our main thread now for any means we use to promote the game and community.

We now meet all criteria for the Hall of Fame! Thanks for your support everyone.

We have attracted a lot of great players from our NW Vault listing and i've recieved a lot of e-mails from impressed visitors! (Well over 30 in the three months we have been on the vault)

NW Vault is all about giving our community the right exposure and to present it in a truly representative light - however just recently we have had a comment added which I strongly believe to be misinformed, unhelpful and unrepresentative and almost insulting to the community, which was described as

"I’m aware that MERP UK is server vault, my point is that it may as well be local vault with the EXP/loot/magic levels you have. The experience is the same… folk running around from spawn to spawn with their sparkly weapons flopped out more interested in finding ‘stuff’ than engaging in basic civility, let alone RP."

Is this a fair comment made in a public forum about the hours many of you have spent playing here?

Have a read of the rest of the comment, it gets better!
HERE - COMMENT BY 'STRANGELOVE' (http://nwvault.ign.com/community/gameworlds/data/1086818098000.shtml)

Has this 8-9 hour experience of the world summed you and us up accurately?

Does this individual seem to have made the effort to learn anything about the community?

I probably know the answers to these already, as i've already posted my comment to this which will update soon on the vault.

I urge everyone to post a comment to this one too - comments like the one given here are unhelpful to people looking for a PW to play on, and the last thing we need is misinformation about MERP UK circulating.

Cheers folks.

Yeah, no worries now, plenty of nice new comments now to draw the right attention to us.

Thanks guys. His remaining (and only really valid) criticism is of the accessibility to items - which I do agree with.

Why is it though that people comment on things when im working on them!? :P My own bad luck I guess :) (currently deuberising a lot of stores)

Notice how the Strangelove is actually a DM on another server. Or someone pretending to be a DM. I did.
What an idiot, sounds like the type of server he likes to play on would probably send ME to the grave from boredom. It's equally about having fun and playing your role.
No fun today makes Jack a dull boy, or something like that.
Im pretty sure Tolkien wouldn't be bothered, more likely pleased that so many people are enjoying something based on his literature. In doing the module, in a way, you are immortalising Tolkien and his works.

What got my back up about it was just the way in which he felt able to make an accurate assessment/review of us based on an afternoon and nights playing time.

If we were a campaign/single plot story driven server, then this would have been ok, as such modules tend to have a few hours playing time in them. But the fact is that this is a persistent world! It doesnt just 'end' when you reach a certain point.

I felt that the comment about roleplay was very poor - you can't judge a whole community on the actions of a few. But we know he didn't have much of a clue because he was not even aware of our resting system, which becomes rather obvious once it kicks in.

He mentioned that xp was 'way too high'. In this case, he comes from a VERY low rewards community. I know for a fact that we are actually the lowest or amongst the lowest xp rewarding MERP community.

The only thing he said that I did see eye to eye with was to do with rewards. He was right with PW's - 'Less is more'. I am already seeking to give more challenges and provide more intrigue instead of spoon feeding rewards and access to magic as you all know. Though I will certainly not be trying to recreate his idea of a perfect PW; a bit too extreme I think, but there will be some significant changes here which I know big fans of Untold Tales will really enjoy :)

Sorry, Kev, but if the "basic concept of less is more" is, as he continues,
"if you’re not mean with EXP/loot/Magic from day one and remain committed to this principle despite what some players may misguidedly desire you are basically robbing them of any challenge. Unfortunately, once this particular beast is out the box it’s unfixable without a vault wipe and complete restructuring of all items, shops and spawns. " I totally disagree.

Sometimes less is less and more is more. Sometimes things are just what they seem to be. Sometimes people come home from their real life affairs and just need some fantasy that can take them into another world, like Middle Earth and forget a little about all the RL stuff. He sounds to me like someone who loves that " be mean" part and would certainly love MERP_UK to shoot itself in the head by doing a vault and item wipe.

Unfortunately, once this particular beast is out the box it’s unfixable without a vault wipe and complete restructuring of all items, shops and spawns. " I totally disagree.

So do I :)

Thats the part of it that I feel is too extreme.

What I said about it was:

Though I will certainly not be trying to recreate his idea of a perfect PW; a bit too extreme I think, but there will be some significant changes here which I know big fans of Untold Tales will really enjoy

Significant changes will NOT include a vault wipe :) Just changes to quest rewards, the availibility/means of obtaining magic items and some toning of item properties where I feel that the item is doing the work and not the character. Also hoping to make many, many more magic spells, effects and skills more useful and not invalidated by items - The world has been mellowing in this direction all the time, this is just a more noticeable phase of it.

You can be assured by me, I will not even consider wiping the vault! The most intervention you will see from me is swapping the odd item about where obsolete versions are found - and there is already a grace period underway for that. More to be explained soon. :)

Any chance of you slinging a 'Tolkien Chronicle' our way some time soon?

Following our recent induction into NW Vaults Hall Of Fame, I have been interviewed about MERP UK and Untold Tales. The interview will be published on the NW Vault site sometime soon.

For you lucky people though, I have a copy of the questions and my answers to them, so you all get a nice preview :) The interview was a nice opportunity to talk about the story so far and to give us yet more public exposure in the run up to the release of UTT2. And of course to make a few rants, as we do ;)

1) Could you give our readers some personal background on yourself?

My name is Kevin Balmer and I’m from the UK. I’m 19 years old, turning 20 this November. I have always been interested in creative activities revolving around computers, so NWN is the perfect game for me to pursue as a hobby. I am looking to have a career in the games industry at some point in the future.

2) How big is your team and who are some of the key members?

There are currently ten people on the development team, myself included. Besides myself, there are two members who do an incredible amount of work; Barking_Mad who has produced a number of excellent scripts and systems and our Minas Tirith region of the world. Avalyn is our creative writer, and he has helped to produce a large proportion of the plots and written content for the gameworld. He also edits our community newsletter, ‘Tolkien Chronicles’. But I don’t want to give the impression it’s the work of three; the whole team make very valuable contributions. We also have a player content team or PCT as we call it for short. This consists of enthusiastic players who help in the development of the world by submitting ideas and ‘blueprints’ for material in our forums and via e-mail.

3. Your Persistent World is called "<a href="http://nwvault.ign.com/community/gameworlds/data/1086818098000.shtml" target="_blank">MERP UK's Untold Tales Of Tolkien</a>" was recently inducted into our Hall of Fame. Could you give us an overview of what it's all about.

Untold Tales of Tolkien is a Middle Earth/LOTR module targeted towards the mature role player. It offers accurate recreations of the lands depicted in Tolkien’s work, produced to the highest possible quality. One of the big aspects in the gameworld is choice; there are other ways to advance than by just fighting. Attention has been paid to addressing the issues of balance between the extremes of PvP and PvM, making our gameworld friendly to those looking for interaction on the human and AI level. Untold Tales is more than just a game where you login, role-play with characters and embark on great story driven adventures; it is a glowing tribute to Tolkien and his extraordinary imagination, and acts as a place where you can learn as well as play.

4. What are some of the main features that stand out from other worlds?

Note that this list contains features which make us stand out from other Middle Earth/LOTR worlds, rather than gameworlds in general.

Untold Tales uses an alignment and race based system to determine where a character begins in the gameworld on his/her creation. This means that players can role-play a character hailing from his/her true home. A large (and still growing) emphasis has been placed on skills. Many of the NPC’s and content in the world use skill checks, giving those characters investing in certain skills a distinct advantage over others; this broadens the range of character types in the gameworld and makes the game more replayable with new characters.

The entire item set has been, as we like to call it ‘Tolkienised’; basically we have changed standard item names and/or added a Middle Earth themed description to the item. The touch this adds to the gameworld is immense and makes you feel more like you are in Middle Earth as opposed to Forgotten Realms. As well as an original item set, we have produced over 150 books, each one focussing on an area, person or race in Middle Earth. These books can be found amongst loot, or be read in some of the worlds many lore vaults. The books provide players with a great opportunity to learn about Middle Earth and inspire themselves with new ideas.

A big feature of Untold Tales is our quests. They have been designed as non-linear, offering alternative endings, good/evil options, ways of failing the quest and ways of persuading/bullying and lying to the NPC. Other, more general, main features include an attention to detail and visual effect; something which has always seemed to lack on Middle Earth/LOTR gameworlds. We want to do Tolkien as much justice as possible by making the most accurate and representative recreation of his work. The gameworld is updated very regularly and is open to all; no passwords are required and no payments are ever required (we are strongly opposed to any payment schemes).

5) How strict are you on Roleplaying?

One of our main requirements is that players remain in character at all times. So with that, you could say we are a hardcore role-playing gameworld. We have a number of role-playing related rules, mostly pertaining to the nature of communications between characters; no internet jargon, for example. This doesn’t mean every sentence must start and end with a thee and a thou; we just ask that communications be in character and appropriate. We have a wealth of support content for players available in our forums and on our website. This content provides tips on general good role-play practices and ways of role-playing better to a Middle Earth setting. We also recommend a number of good authors who use NW Vault to promote their material. We are dedicated to our target audience, which is dedicated role-players, so players who persist in not role-playing are removed from the community to make way for those who do.

6) Could you describe some of the activities that players can do on your world.

Besides taking part in exciting, story driven adventures with many possible outcomes, there are many activities available in the world in which the player is in the driving seat. To name a few examples; we have a tavern, run by two dwarven player characters. Many a night of social gatherings take place in this tavern. A few player characters are merchants, and many a character will flock to these merchants for rarities or to cut a good deal. We have a regular weekly event which consists of gladiatorial style duels in a secret underground arena. From time to time, the fires of war can be kindled and the War of the Ring comes into play and players can fight for one of the two sides. We have support for guilds too, so like minded characters can band together and follow a set purpose or mission.

7) How heavily does the role of DMs play in daily activities?

The gameworld is capable of functioning perfectly well without heavy DM involvement, but we prefer to have a 24/7 DM presence in the world. We have worked hard lately to take on DMs from spaced time zones so that there is always one about. Further work needs to be done on this. The DMs role in our gameworld is to enhance and add to the experiences of the characters; through interaction with characters, to spicing up the events of quests and adventures and encouraging new player-based plots to arise. It’s our eventual goal to take the idea away from some players that DMs are some sort of constant police force chasing after troublesome players and watching them; that’s not the DMs real job, so we operate a zero tolerance approach to troublemakers to allow DMs to enjoy their DMing and their real roles which is player interaction.

8) How long have you been working on the world?

Work began on Untold Tales Of Tolkien in August of 2003 and is an ongoing project, being as it is a persistent world. So this makes Untold Tales 15 months old at this time of writing. Ideas for the world were going through my mind a few months prior to starting building work however. In May of 2003 I set-up the NWN community ‘Middle Earth Roleplay UK’ or MERP UK as the easier abbreviation. Until August 2003 we hosted the popular public LOTR v2a module; I used this as an opportunity to gauge thoughts on LOTR/Middle Earth modules and took the feedback forwards for Untold Tales Of Tolkien.

9) What are the requirements, if any, to join and where do people do so?

We have a number of software requirements. You require copies of; NWN, SoU and HotU, patched to the latest version. You also need to download the Community Expansion Pack and its patch if you do not already have it installed. The CEP is available to download at this excellent site here.

Other requirements are that players must be willing to be in character at all times and attempt to take in the Middle Earth theme; we’re not in Faerun anymore. Our target audience is the mature role player, so being a mature player is also a requirement.

PART 2:

10) What are some of the things you are working on right now in regards to improving your world?

At this time we are working on an enhanced version of Untold Tales Of Tolkien, which will be named Untold Tales Of Tolkien II. Using a lot of the already existing gameworld content, we will be throwing in a stack of new material and customising the game system considerably to create an even more detailed Middle Earth environment. To name a few of UTT2’s features;

We will have a number of our own Middle Earth custom prestige classes available for selection, such as Olog Hai, Black Numenorean, Dunedain Ranger, Elven Bowmaster and Dwarven Axemaster. There will be many more creatures added to the gameworld, a large proportion with ties to the texts. The Gameworlds item set and economy has been completely replaced whereby we hope to see characters just about getting by on the resources they have. The new item set is Middle Earth themed and is of generally low power level. This gives us the opportunity to employ many new and exciting features in the gameworlds activities which a high power item set can often prevent.

We will be using our own Middle Earth themed crafting system, which will be just one of many means of activity for those characters who advance in ways other than fighting. A lot of new quests are to be added to the gameworld with some detailed stories behind them and many possible outcomes and surprises. A large number of these quests are also faction based, so there are many more activities available for those who wish to follow the War of the Ring. A stack of support is being included for players, including a reference manual document, guide books in the welcome area, and even our own custom player tips on the games loading screens! We plan to upgrade our online game to Untold Tales II in December/New Year.

11) What custom content are you currently using? Do you have any plans on using the Community Expansion Pack?

We currently use the Community Expansion Pack, which is a brilliant resource. All credit to its contributors. Untold Tales Of Tolkien II will use CEP and also our own small custom content package to enable our custom prestige classes and system modifications.

12) What are your thoughts on the toolset and what things would you like to see improved?

More functionality for multiplayer game builders would be a nice feature. Although I tend to scratch build my own quests, it would be nice if the wizards would take into account multiplayer games too. Another feature I’d like to see would be a better previewing environment, whereby character sheets for NPC’s could be viewed.

13) What are thoughts on NWN and the community?

Incredible, to sum it up. The huge moddability factor the game has means that the NWN community has been able to hold itself together and keep on growing. There have always been so many people out there who have always wanted to create their own gameworld or create their own story. NWN offers infinite opportunities to these people. In our role in the community as a Middle Earth Roleplay gameworld, we have encountered many members of the NWN community, some good, some bad, but then I guess that’s the nature of the community. It can be very much like a market place, as every group in the NWN community has its own target audience. There are some amazing people in the NWN community, with a wealth of talent and input to offer to many groups. When you run a large role-play world like ours, it really is the players that make or break the world.

14) Anything else you'd like to add?

I’d like to take this opportunity to draw attention to our partner and host Wireplay UK. Wireplay is a online games service provider, offering excellent services for a wide range of popular online games. Wireplay is all about community, and is a fitting port of call for any member of the NWN community. We have a thriving NWN community, so why not drop by, or contact the NWN Community Liaison – that’s me. Wireplay can be found here: http://www.wireplay.co.uk/site

Last but not least; why not give Untold Tales Of Tolkien a try? If you enjoy role-playing and story telling and the work of Tolkien, this is the world for you. If you know little or nothing about Middle Earth, this is the place to learn! It is the goal of MERP UK to put the role-playing back into Middle Earth gaming. We feel that the role-play section of the Middle Earth gameworlds is suffering from a great deal of mis-representation. There are too many gameworlds offering action over role-play or even pure action, and then displaying their gameworld as role-play. This leads to large numbers of action players logging into dedicated role-play servers and disrupting the game with their unsupported approach to the game. It is hoped that Untold Tales II can help make a statement that MERP UK is offering a representative Middle Earth Roleplay world.
