whilst talking on thread recently about utt2 we discussed the much increaded need to travel in a party as most of utt2 would be too dificult to solo. this means that players would spend more time within citys and towns waiting for other players to arive, however waiting around town for someone to arrive would be quite boring so a lot of players would be likely to go afk or simply log off.
So i sugested using the arena under the greyflood tavern in tharbad for fighting npc animal/monsters of varying ability gladiater style to perhaps earn a bit of money test your skills and pass the time while you wait for enough people to arive to create a party,i do not think it would be wise to give exp in this arena as some people would use it as a means of lvling and its original perpose would be overshadowed, well any way thats that idea.
I think this concept of entertainment can be brought further than just this idea perhaps archery competions in lorien, drinking competions in erebor, arm wrestling in isenguard, riding competions in rohan(one day perhaps),cooking competions in the shire, ect............
please post your opinions, sugstions and ideas.

also please don't post on this thread if you think utt2 should be made easier so it can be soloed this is'nt what this thread is about at all.
I like your ideas Argon, however I am not sure how feasable this would be if it was entirely embedded in to the game.
I know practicaly nothing about scripting but sense that your suggestion would lead to some complex scripts.
May be better to RP a lot of the above, this would require hardly any additional scrippting and be more flexible.
Drinking competetions are already rp'd quite well.
With archery, so long as you have an indestructable combat dummy but one that can be "dammaged", the participants could attack it and whoever does the highest damage over an agreed number of shots is the winner.
Not sure about how the cooking comp would work.. Frain would always be up for any competition invloving food and drink though;)
Its intended that the design of UTT2 will free DMs from policing, (much of what they do now) and allow them to do their real jobs. So with DMs more free, im sure they will be running events left, right and centre. And im sure Mathas will open up his extended Inn for peoples enjoyment.
Another thing to note; Ive added a number of 'non combat quests'. Mostly designed for lower levels and beginners though. These quest revolve around you being employed as a courier/collector, etc. So these are other things you can do whilst waiting etc. Theres also lots of books avaialble to read too. You may get some ideas from reading them.

good to hear that kev i must admit suspected from what i'd read previosly that there would be more non-combat quests:).
but i still think the arena ideas a good one i think it could be done i.e i could'nt but i bet kev could ,but perhaps kevs already thought of it or perhaps an even better idea for the arena:) to keep us ocupied when were alone and bored:(.
I like Argon's idea somewhat, a few changes to it would be nice though i think.
1: Why not get xp? You would actually have the ability to be a gladiator instead of an adventurer, add tokens like you have talked about doing with npcs in other areas. These tokens will only apply down in the very area (place a few npcs, nobles who watches ect) and you could have the address you differently. Also make it driven by someone other then Marthas at the times. Encounters should be based on the level you are but always with increasing difficulty.
Of course you cant get to fight Balrogs and dragons and such enemies as there would have to be a way to actually capture the enemy first and that point also justifies a max level you can be as a Gladiator, at some point you simply cant learn more from fighting the same kinds of fights.
Still i can imagine quite a few people who would love to just watch the event, bet on the outcome ect. It has a lot of RP potential and if the max level to fight is relatively low you wont take away the party play that comes later.
Just my two cent

thats what i was thinking with the concept.
and in answer to your question about why not recive exp for your kills in the arena it all comes down to ballance and relying on players not exploit it.
i like the idea of using the arena to prove your prowes to atain missions
What i tried to say was that when people gain 4 xp from an orc then the people who is tempted to taking advantage of the system will most likely be taking advantage of it else where...
