View Full Version : A more Rp and Character knowledge consistent idea
Is there any way to change seeing the skills attributes and names of monsters? How does my character know a vampire? Wargs, ok. Orcs, sure. Dragons, little doubt. Anything in the under - deeps that has no name - what I am I a walking encyclopedia tolkienia?
It would be cool if skills traits told on a right click were tied to a skill, Lore and Spot come to mind.

i think it would just be easier to hide monster names whilst were at lets just hide all names above heads
The names above heads is quite tricky cos its programmed to be part of the setup on each individual computer - you can make so you don't see any - but everyone else . . .
Most seem to just ignore the names of those creatures that their character's wouldn't recognise. I haven't yet heard anyone refering to "Shadow Eaten", usually it's along the lines of "What on middle earth are these?!!"

NEver...ever....ever...make PCs with no name whatsoever. Everyone knows my primary uses A.G.D., the reason was to prevent other players from "knowing" her name by reading the neon above her head. Its a pet gripe of mine, and when i made here I was new here. My secondary now has a full name after discovering the depth or RPing here made the initials unneeded. ( as an aside i would like to ask the DMing team when they have the chance to allow me to remake her with a proper full name, now that i know the "initials method " is unneeded.)
HOWEVER, the initial use of initials was a result of experimenting with no name at all. You can do it, but the game engine then cannot differentiate between PCs on your OR ANY account. Myself and another player did this and when he died and logged of(HCR server...had to be raised...) i would log in dead or in the wrong zone or one of many other terrible issues. ION the end it harmed the Module, and our PCs had to be deleted.

The DMs understood your views regarding using initials, however if we all did this can you imagine how things would look and how crummy the NPC dialogues would be just using character initials in conversation :P
It may at some point be possible to change the name to a full version without a rebuild. Maybe Kev can answer this better than I. Glad you want to ditch the initials though ;)

I appreciated the DMs leeway in the issue Olorin. I now feel( due to the steller level of RPing on this server) it was unnessecary, and if/when a name change is possible, just pm me or post the info.
the problem is:
I couldnt remember everybodies name but my char can!
NWN is a tool and there must be also the player's imagination and interpretation of things!
i mean what shall i do if two chars have nearly the same appearance (this is a computer game there arent individuals though the crafting skill you nearly can make your char a individual)
i think you are able to and you can play out these meta levels
about monsters i also want to know what the dev team wanted them to be! so how shall i know this should be a vampire warg orc or dragon!
you always have to seperate your knowledge and your char's
i know much about the valar but my haradrim doesnt
if you would delete the names the next thing to do is to prevent the ability to watch around the corner
Or people could stop meta-gaming, cuz that is what people are doing if their character knows what is around that corner! You can have an idea about it if you have invested skill points in the listen skill or similar.
Scripting yourself out of everything will cause more lag and when its a question about meta-gaming things like that I really believe the player himself should have the decency to know the difference between what he knows and what his player knows.
Of course I dont expect everyone to remember every little detail your character have heard, but important things that your character knows can always be written into your journal as it is stored locally and not in the server vault, thus it doesn't reset after server boot/crashes and it can be a very valuable source for you.
Of course the flip side of this is there will be many things our characters know that we don't know.
Someone playing a Dwarf may know very little about Tolkien's dwarves and their knowledge, whereas the dwarf himself would have a great understanding of Dwarven culture and beliefs.
We as players meet and travel with lots of people who, lets be honest, due to the limitations look very similar - the names above headds help here, and using them isn't necessary meta-gaming. Likewise a character may have fought a certain monster any number of times and have developed an understanding of its weaknesses, but we have other things in our life beyond this game, and we forget things our characters might know. I don't often right-click on monsters myself - other than to look at descriptions myself and others have written, but sometimes if I've fought them multiple times I may have a quick look to remind myself as a player about them - somthing I'm sure my characetr would remember.

and there is a way to make it so you PC doesnt/cant look around corners....drop the view so you arent looking at things from above but at floor level...the walls take care of the rest
