View Full Version : Beholders?
Im sure we all are familliar with these creatures from Hordes of the Underdark. They are a well known creature of the forgotten realms, so I want these monsters to have more of a middle earth theme.
Im looking for a new name along with a description for them. Just post ideas below.

'The All Seeing'
Many where the Maiar of old who followed Melkor into Arda, and fought for him. And many were the forms they took. Vampire, Werewolf and many more. Strangest of these are the All Seeing, great eyes, surrounded by smaller eyes, they see all, they know all. They have the power of the Maia, and are not to be taken lightly.
Bingo :) Thanks :)
Not long till I add 'back to Angband' mission. Though I've decided for a full level redesign- I think the sewer tileset will do a better job -filthy and very metalic and industrial - suitable for the Iron Prison :)

I think it would be cool if the central eye of a beholder is what the "palantirs"(sp?) were made from. Or if Beholders were made from the "missing" Palantirs be Sauron as deadly spies and sub commanders.

:) need rather too many Palantirs for that....
There were only seven palantiri made. Wrought by Feanor in the depths of time, the smallest of which was a foot in diameter. The largest of which were at Osgiliath, the second at Amon Sul. The master stone rested in the west on the island of Numenor. With the fall of the island the master stone was brought to Osgilliath by Elendil the Tall. The stone at Amon Sul made the place contested by the three brother kigdoms of Cardolan (Tharbad), Rhudar (Cameth Brin) and Arthedain (Fornost).
Minas Ithil and Minas Anor were among the first stones to be captured by Sauron and their uses perverted. They were also the means by which Saruman and Denethor were fooled into despair and rash actions- because they were shown only what Sauron wanted them to see.
Aaragorn's use of the Palantir was what precipitated Sauron to open war, because it demonstrated a true king remained and that his dupe Saruman was defeated and presumed destroyed.
No one of the third age possesses the skill to make a Palantir and hardly enough to use one.
My suggestion is that the beholders should be some nameless critter of the deep. Otherwise I cannot see them really being used in M.E., or perhaps some experiment of some sort in the lost recesses of Mordor.

Indeed. Last time we saw them used was in the depths of Angband where all manner of nastiness was made and only ever hinted at by Tolkien. I know Beholders are very AD&D, but they look good and taste of chicken so Im sure we can justify them one way or another...
Hendutir - Eye of Watching (not sure about the structure on this word)
Henulca - Evil Eyed (reckon that is accurate)
*points to description of All Seeing above*
Perfect excuse there. (Not that I'm biased at all)

I never intended that EVERY beholder was created by a perverted palantir, just likely the first and strongest beholder. Then that was "cloned" as mages tend to do wit hthier experiments. Sorry if it seemed other wise.
Yes I agree, that no one of the third age may have the skill or power to make a new palantir, and for plot reasons I didnt expect that one would be made, just thought it might be interesting if the belolders were part of the recepir to make one.
Oh...and as to no one of the third age being skilled or powerful enough, Sauron isnt technicaly OF the third age right? I think he might have a few tricks left in a NWN mod based on the books. Heck he made Scrill and even tolkien wasnt that twisted.:naughty:

hmm Tolkien made Ungoliant, so i think he was that twisted... :)
... but wait till you meet some of our other babies. The dev team is pretty twisted too :P

I agree Ghost. A weak Maiar seems the perfect description for a Beholder, and therefore the only beholders should be pretty damn tough. I think they should be used as bosses and not spawns, because there shouldn't be an large number of them.

I think anyway you can add more monsters to the server will be accepted. Im you cant tell me Tolken would not of done the same if he were alive and running the sever. Just because they were not mentioned in his book doesnt mean that they could not possibly exsist. Variety was a characteristic of his writtings. And he mentions many times that other creatures unnamed exsisted.
Of course I think you all already realize this and that means Im not really sure why I just wrote this. At least I can add another number to my post count.

*laughs* hey i just got another aswell
Well as many now know, they are in. Basically I kept the Maiar idea ghost81 gave, but claimed that most of this power had gone from their exposure to evil.
