Uhm...havent voted since the question on the poll is "should the arena be classed as A or B?" and the choices are:
Yes...class it as A or B
No ...do not class it as A or B
class it as both A and B
Hard to chose In game or out of game when the responsed are yes, no, or both
Might be more effective if the question was:
How should the Arena evets be labeled?
1) in game (All info gatherd is usabel, its a game world event/contest with a winner and prize)
2) out of game (no RP needed, its just for the fun of slaughtering the other PCs to get PVP out of your system)
3) Both (its a fun PVP event with RPing enforced for added fun and flavor, however no information gathered can bu used during normal game play)

Didn't even have to think twice, my answer is... YES!
(Very much like Shiryu, I've made my thoughts about this public a while ago.)
tell me how to answer a this-or-that-question with 'yes'/'no'
i would vote for the arena shouldnt be classed as in-character but also there isnt allowed any ooc..
i guess some metagaming is hard to aviod in the arena.
as i think my char wouldnt meet some of the other chars in a weekly arena contest the arena shouldnt be classed as the untold tales of tolkien we usually are telling with your chars cause the arena is meant to have fun not to be Middleearth-like...
what i try to say is that of course you should be in-character alll time (and also in the arena) but i hate it when another char tells me he knows this strange figure (evil char!!) from the arena event.
thats why i think the arena shouldnt be in your char's journal he later will tell his companies

If you don't want other people to see you, don't go there. If you think hiding your name is really important, don't give it. If other people don't find it out in the arena, they will find it elsewhere.
To me, the arena is still in the same world as the rest of our adventures. Tharbad is neutral, so it's normal for the arena to be neutral as well, so that all kinds of "alignments" can go there and try to win that reward.
Someone else getting your name in the Arena is hardly reason enough to make it ooc. It's really not that big of a deal. People pass information all the time, both in and out of that arena.
I mean, I have to say this with complete honesty, the possibility of role-playing my character inside that Arena is my favourite thing about Merp UK apart from the other DM organized events! Why should the information gathered there be considered obsolete? That would just contribute to make things messy and confusing. I would have to be EXTRA careful just to make sure I would never use anything I heard in there again.

The dms have enough on their plate poor sods:)
When khazaldor dressed as *whoever* being called *whoever* by his allies and giving his name as *whoever* to strangers is called to fight in the arena by Mathus, he is called "khazaldor" *shrugs*. So khazaldors' name , by default, is out-of-game knowledge eh :D
Kinda common sense really.
The arena event as a whole is already discussed IC by most of us innit? And we all communicate IC when we're there .....
