i personaly enjoy it most when the players ideas are spured on by the dms,
i like it when you feel like your in a world were you can rp with everybody npcs and pcs alike, it makes the game far more engrossing so dms just being around to chat as npcs nothing complicated just chat.
Well, it was a very litte one, but faced by the "Wrath of Ulmo on the Dunedain Camp" was very, very cool. Elementals started poping out of the pond... then wheels of the wagons ! And Strider telling me off in the end for picking up a Dammed Drinker and slaping me silly was also priceless.
"Raid on Tharbad" was also very good. Hordes of Uruks, Orcs and Black Numenorans rained from the Moutains upon us. This was good because everyone RPed very very well (still remember Shiryu getting a bit mad when told off to hold the rear :P).
"A Talkative Drake" on the mountains south of Edoras was also one of my favourites. Too bad, everyone calls me crazy, now...
"Tharbad devided" was impressive all the way, from "taxes" , executions and coup, all very well done.
And only them old players will remeber this one, but... I am still waiting for the exciting conclusion of "A Child in Moria".
I miss the Arena... :P
My personal favourite was quite a while ago, and I don't even know which DM was involved.. Glorin, Vyl and Gregoire Althane were exploring the Tolfalas tunnels, which seemed rather shaky, so Glorin was criticising their construction from a technical point of view. He tapped the walls to check their soundness, and that produced little clouds of dust. He commented on tunnels being in danger of cave-ins, and they shook and dust fell from the ceiling. There was also a Will-o'-the-wisp chase in the labyrinth, quite spooky.. lots of darkness. :) Just the right atmosphere, I guess.
Also, with a similar party, there once was an extra-tough vampire in the Esgaroth haunted tower; invulnerable in the dark, it seemed. The party went back to complain at the quest givers and were told thad sunlight would weaken vampires... so we had to find a way of luring the vampire out.
Gloin - the first one sounds like Olorin to me - very much his style of thing.
The second one was both Olorin and myself.
* laughs evills at remembering Badger Vyl trying to lure the Vampire outside*

Most of lorien and olorins evil stealth quests were reet good ; recovering the crystal whatsit for saruman stood out in my mind and the mating call of the Northern range falcon for some reason.
Also the early DM spiced-up standard quests with beeline, coldbayne, cullkett etc were a blast
The thing thats had me most rolling around laughing (to the neighbours annoyance) has been when Khaz dresses as Reagal of The Watch and the interactions with DMs and players that that provokes; so framing Tyrion with Wulfus and Cullkett, framing Yushmar with Jonalin and Akbar, framing Shiryu with Cullkett, Gulnath, Jonalin, Khief, Minnim and ... oh wait .. we havent done that one yet *cough*
(Argon .. help!!! gettim off me)
Basically, just sheer typing enjoyment that was player-promoted then supported by the DMs.

Hard to name the best but... some of my favourite DM events/"spiced up quests" were:
1- "Protecting Tharbad" - Simply amazing, everyone working together to save the city, a rare chance to actually feel important and saving the day. Wouldn't mind seeing something like this again, really made me feel like a "hero" and that my actions actually had some influence in the world around me.
2- "Panic at the Dunedain Camp" - Amazing work on this one as well, especially those small details which are often forgotten. Whoever "DMed" this one has my sincere congratulations, incredible work really.
Of course there were others like the "Child in Moria" , "Saving the Captain" or the latest "Martial law hits Tharbad".
Obviously I like the ones which affect the world directly a whole lot better than the ones that feel like we are just "watching" others make history, but I also understand the "implications" of these events so... anything like the ones above is fine by me really.
I miss the Arena as well but I know that one won't return. :P
(The names above probably aren't correct but I think you know what I'm talking about.)

Ive always personally enjoyed tweaking the encounters for more powerul parties to ensure that they get a decent fight. :P
Vague shapes stalking adventurers in the Deep Dark is always satisfying... The Unbravore is down there... in a void of its own making... gnawing upon its own shadow, consuming reason, excreting madness...
But I think I enjoy the calmer subtler touches best, the addition of the occasional beastie, domestic or otherwise... With a moo and occasional flatulence the aging bovine ambled amiably after the object of her affections...

Have to agree with Gloin. Over a period of 2/3 days Greg, Vyl and Glorin had a number of encounters with DMs.
No grand "saving the entire world" type encounters, but really nice little touches that helped bring the world to life. Such as Glorin tapping the walls and little clouds of dust appearing and the pyrotechnics in the Will-o'-the wisp chase.
In fact those few days were some of my absolute favourites on the server, great players to RP with and realy good DM intervention to bring the world alive.
My favorite even was possibly the event that was set by Saruman to cause strife between Esgaroth and Erebor. I think it was because we were given a freedom to make decisions ourselves as to what to do. However I may of been biased on this matter as I was trying to guide the party along.
However most events I have been involved in have been fun. The others that come to mind, was the time a group of us met the olog under Moria. Or the first time a group fought the shadow dragon, where it was so dark no one could see bodies lying on the floor.
But my opinion on the best events are the ones, where you get a little bit of input that can change how things pan out. However I can imagine those are the hardest to control. But as long as people have the time to stop and talk I do not mind, just not too much running and hacking and slashing please...

*shivers remembering the vampire in Esgaroth*
I think my *favourite* (at least until I remember another one and have to sit a long time thinking about it again) DM event was in Edoras with Vinduil, involving a host of cats and kittens that were all terribly hungry and in need of milk, and getting to see a proud Vinduil having to milk a cow :E
It always makes me smile when I see that cow still there now.
All hail Vinduil, Royal Milk Maid of Edoras!
Although not strictly a DM event in the sense of this thread but I enjoyed the time when Mathas's cook ran the Arena event, it was hilarious. I often didn't attend the Arena event... but glad I did that time:D
Aules Rp of Dorian the old Tharbad guard :P
Whoever ran the crazed evil druid quest, that was cool. Only wish my brain wasn't so dead at the time, but thanks for the hints xD
*chuckles* You were both being a bit dense on that event, aye... I thought the druid couldn't possibly have dropped any more clues about how to defeat him ;)
But that's fair enough, it worked OK in the end, and I really enjoyed doing that one. Oh, and all the Tharbad mischief that led up to the revolt, including Dorian.. that was good fun too :)
I have to agree with what other DMs have said before -- it's nice when players do "events" on their own and all we have to do was watch and perhaps provide a few special effects. In particular, what sticks out in my memory was the Yushmar-Akbar duel in the woods (see What's Going On in the World thread) -- I was barely aware of their RP backstory when I was told they'd have a show-down, and really enjoyed watching and playing Elrond afterwards... brilliant work :)

UTT1, the attack on Mordor. After a heated Arena of Arda event, my old character Calia Hendel, the old dwarves (Dungrim, Dargo), RageBow, Avalyn (I think) Kail Cadarn, Avalyn and Azarnimir Minalzagar, and lots of others that I cannae remember decided to take a quick visit to Mordor which was first intended as a quick scout mission, but we soon dug further in and got to Minas Morgul after lots of ressurection. There was a fight with orcs there, and we reached the tower and the Nazgul came out in force, with The Witch King possessed by Kev (I think). A huge fight ensued, with Azarnimir and the dwarves smashing into the Nazgul, with me Avalyn, RageBow and Kail at the back, casting spells on our party and light spells at the Nazgul. My favourite moment had to be when I successfully cast a moderately damaging spell on the Witch King, and drawing my sword to block a hit then be cut down instantly.
Classic :D We won in the end, me acting as scout and easily beating off Mordor thralls with my Zen Archery and earning a shiny Morgul Blade and Black Numenorean Armour in the process :D
EDIT: It was a great time then. I had to pick this over...
+ Attack on Harad
+ Fight With Saruman and Thralls (Lorick)
+ Attack on Isengard (The Marshall, jesus! He managed to strike Veld with TRIPLE Critical...and Cubs was there. He led me into a team of fire crossbowmen)
+ Return to Isengard to Rescue That Elf I Forgot The Name Of
The reason Mordor was the best was the feeling we had stemmed evil for a time, and the fact we had burst into Mordor like an army and smote at least 50 orcs and the Nazgul :D
Beatin up orcs has always been a favorite pasttime of the brothers, and will be ferever. 'cheers and downs a Dunsdoom'
There was a liveliness that was enjoyable in UTT1, battles could and would happen anytime, like a war.
I'd enjoy most opening oor cracked Anvil, wed attract a load of brothers and a few other elves and humans, everyone would get drunk, and usually a dwarf would start something, get angry about wyrms or something then the whole tavern would empty and we'd all charge off for a drunken battle.... And tha dwarves always needed backup from the various characters around in them days. Thanks fer the backup. Ye all know who ye were.
And there were the time erebor was attacked by wyrms, lots of em, and 4 brave brothers defeated them!! hehe, twas fun that one.
Old days were tha best:)

i think the old days are coming back
the other night when the anvil was attacked by a dragon you'd of liked it.
also if some of the old players come back thing will be even better :) *looks at beeline*
Indeed Argon. The RP and activities on the server have come on in leaps and bounds of late. DM events are becoming based on the actions of characters, players are making their own 'quests' and missions on the fly rather than always relying on scripted quests.
The RP quality of players is so much better and players are mellowing to the idea of the game after a prolonged period of playing here.
