View Full Version : Regular events - Market

We are looking into setting up a weekly schedule with events which will take place on a regular basis.

One such idea is a weekly market day. We mentioned introducing this before, but it never really got off the ground. This time I plan to fully launch it and make it as popular and as visited as possible.

There isn't really a story or an adventure attached to it - it is an opportunity for characters to gather in one place and trade with oneanother and an opportunity to buy rare finds or exotic goods. Naturally, it allows for heavy roleplaying between characters.

It would take place in Tharbad for the whole of every Sunday. Those wishing to run a stall can just come along and occupy a small section of the main street, at the road side. A town bayliff will collect a small payment from PC merchants who setup stalls. You are welcome to setup a stall immediately- the bayliff will collect the money later. The fee will not exceed 200 gold pieces.

We will also be happy to create merchant's shingles for PC merchants who will use this service regularly. A merchant's shingle will basically be a label for your store. So characters passing may see your sign "Willener and Sons exotic spices", for instance.

The market should serve well as a nexus for roleplaying and meetings, a place for craftsmen to profit from their work and as a means of controling the world economy, with characters spending their excess gold.

Players are still expected to be in character at all times, and to take notice of appropriate roleplaying in Tharbad. Because of this, Orcs would be expected to make themselves discreet. Evil characters are welcome to set up stalls. But im afraid Orcs will not be allowed to run stalls, sorry. They would be easily detected and their selling skills will leave a lot to be desired :)

I am keen to test the market idea sometime this week perhaps before Sunday. It depends on what I get done. Below is a price list. When the bayliff collects your fee, you need to declare any other services you will be using, which will add to the cost:

- Running a stall (obvious) 200gp
- Stall Building +500gp (Nice market building!)
- Crafting Anvil +500gp (will allow you to craft items for customers)

Merchant's Shingle's

Only apply for one if you are going to, or decide to run a stall regularly.

Make your application below. Just enter the text for the sign. This text will appear when you move your cursor over the sign. Don't go overboard with text please.

Good example:

"Blaede's Emporium - Best blades and armour - (insert cheeky remark)"

So make them simple and effective. You don't need an essay.

We will try to make some exotic goods for the market. They wont do much for you, but we rely on players to hold them to high sentimental value though their roleplaying.

I hope as many players as possible make use of the market, either as customers or as merchants.

I think Jonalin will most definately be interested in a stall building and anvil.

And as quoted it is "Willener and Sons, Seller of exotic spices and purveyor of the finest goods."

I think this is really good idea and will hopefully promote the use of crafting skills and the expansion of food items.

*goes away to think about what type of stall Deidus could open*

Hmm....perhaps the first porn broker.....

maybe you could setup a nomadian arabic tent (there is one or two in the placeables) with a sign outside which says Yûshmar's wandering supplies..

just a instant thought what i really appreciate but considering i havent much time atm it would be maybe also a waste of your time if i wont get the time :)

btw: nice new impulses you are making there - kev :)

i have found that the cost of "crafted goods" is way way way out of synch with their "true value" ... so for instance a +3 composite bow which costs 15k - ish from an NPC merchant will sell for a hell of a lot less from a friendly crafter ,,, even to as low as "cost-plus-whatever-else-you-want-to-donate", simply so the crafter can get the xp (imo) ... perhaps the cost of crafting should be upped somewhat.
I fully appreciate the effort to make these select items available only to those with the appropriate crafting skill (which is INT-based , not STR), but really do feel that perhaps the whole thing is too-easy-low-cost-good-itemsville. Or something. And the crafter gets a good xp-coin ratio (read xp-time invested on a different thread) if we want to take it that far.
*cough*

A good xp-coin ratio?? The most xp you get from crafting something is about erm 100 or so. And since Jonalin does not craft things on a regular basis, that is not that much in the long run. As for prices, if you wish him to increase his prices I am sure he will be more than willing to do so. However it is a competitive world out there and I may say it is cost price, but in fact... there is always an increase in the amount I charge. But I do remember a while back someone saying that crafting should not be more than 100% of the initial cost of the item. Which with there being more and more crafters coming along, you need to keep your prices competitive.

I have no problems if the cost of crafting went up, however at the moment, the number of items available is limited and some of those do not work. So until things are perhaps fixed, player crafting will not really be a substitute for the shops.

Yeah crafting does give xp, but in no large amounts when you allow for cost of ingredients etc. However it is a way to slowly build xp whilst doing somthing other than fighting.

Yes it would be possible to have a character exist totally through crafting - if other players were willing to provide them with the ingredients and money for the iems they can make.

If someone wants to spend their time doing this then fair play to them.

I understood though that crafted items cannot be sold to normal Vendors (or at least for any profit) so in a world with a finite number of player characters no-one is going to get very far by just crafting and selling.

Also the majority of crafting items are only available from crafters so they only have a 'true-value' of whatever the crafter wishes to set. Best items are only available through crafters, and using lots of ingredients - which are either expensive or time-costly to gather. So personally I don't see that the gold-xp ratio is bad at all.

In fact in the time it takes to get lets say 1000xp from crafting, and the cost of goods and crafting, the character in question (or others on their behalf) would probably have made a lot more xp and gold gathering the items/money to enable the crafting to take place.

If the city of Tharbad is serious about this commercial venture then it "may" also need to look in to protecting customers from thiefs. If thefts get out of hand the market may become a ghost market.

ooc: just something to keep in mind:) .

perhaps on market days the amount of alowed pp atempts on one char should be reduced then

Fek i've done it again!!!!
Guyror stop it!!!!!!!!
It wasnt a dig at jonalin... Grat-Shaataz has made some bows and rapiers is all, for a *lot* less than an NPC merchant sells comparable items for, but at level 11/12, his peers can ill-afford NPC prices. Please read the parenthesised statement in my last post, which refers to another thread (and then read that thread; "keeping new players" where we're on about the tokens), to perhaps better interpret the "coin-xp ratio" statement.
I feel that some items are too cheap to craft.

*hands Grat a bigger spade*

Some items maybe cheap, others are very expensive. The chucka for example cost 300 ish gold to make, and is only a single throwing axe. I do not know if this is a mistake or not. But to me that is rather expensive.

However I believe that the crafting is still not finished and I trust things will balance themselves out in the end.

I am currently working on a number of economy tweaks. It is being tightened as I have identified a number of areas of the game rewarding characters with too much gold.

It is official! The first official Market day will be tomorrow (Sunday). It will run all day, so come and go as you please. If you seek company, then Tharbad will be the place to go. Look about for PC's and NPC's selling their wares and rarities. Also look out for an auction of an unknown item at some point in the day! (We will not announce the time, but we will choose one when the market is heavily populated).

so orcs can come as long as they keep a low profile? and can they also participate in the auction?

Anyone selling juman heads should not be allowed a stall!

I must admit I was rather surprised at seeing an orc with a stall... Kira was fascinated enough to pay to have a look at the heads but then she is a barbarian.

This Sunday Naighîn is going to open a market stall at 14:00-15:00 (GMT). At a lack of customers the stall might be closed early.
"Snake bites" has to offer a wide range of self crafted weapons, some fine armours, sling ammunition and a couple of useful goods he stumbled across on his journeys.

(One of that being a medium armor+6 which i think is illegal according to the manual?)

Edit: Hmm - wrong sub-Forum probably, i did not see that..
