View Full Version : The Knights Of Gondor
Argon Balros
09-05-2005, 03:10
"At the gates of Minas-tirith there stands a statue tall and proud of Lady Jade Mordigan, the first captain of the Knights of Gondor and founder of this elite force.
After she was forced to slay her good friend Avalyn Silversword when he was possessed by a demon, she lost the will to travel the lands and her famous knightly order of Gondor was disbanded.
Several years later another of Jade's friends, Argon Balros, suggested to her that the order be reformed. As she still could not gather the will to lead the Knights, it was decided that Argon Balros would lead them and so it was that the Knights of Gondor once more rode out of the great gate of Minas-tirith to protect Gondor's borders, aid their allies and, when ever they get the chance, strike a blow to the enemy."
In this order Discipline, Honour and Loyalty are held in the highest reguard, all men are free to join the order if they can meet these three Principles.
Discipline: A Knight must keep in formation and follow orders.
Honour: A Knight by his actions must bring honour to the order and to Gondor.
Loyalty: A Knight must be loyal to the order and to Gondor.
A potential Knight would be accepted to the order as an initiate, when he has proved him self suficiently he will be given full membership and the rank of Squire and asigned to assist a Knight, it is then that Knights responsability to prepare him so that one day his Squire may become a Knight.
A Knight through great deeds may be given the honour of holding the Knights banner or be made First Knight as First Knight he shall be second in Command of the order and first in line to take over should the Knights Captain die or retire.
Acting as the eyes and ears of the order are the Falconers, these adept woodsmen use their falcons to scout and send messages.
The Knights Captain Argon Balros can be found in Minas Tirith and is always on the look out for any that can meet the three principles

Some 40-odd years ago Iorlen Swordwall was an officer in the Guard of the White Tower. In his 30th year of service, while leading a patrol near Osgilliath, he sustained a disabling wound which ended his career as well as his fighting days. Finding only pity and avoided by his former comrades, he left Minis Tirith as a wandering Bard. I am called Iorlen Slowfoot now, and I have long avoided the lands of Gondor. But hearing of your order, I am of a mind to record some of your deeds and share those worth a song with others in western lands. I would consider it an undeserved honor to be permitted to join you in an occasional adventure, though I can be of little help in the battles, and I can travel afoot only slowly. Yet am I still strong, and have some skill in lore and healing.
Respectfully,

good man.
we'll have to see what we can arrange regarding a base of operations for the knights. If our Mr Ptolomy is tied up with other matters i dont mind picking up the loose threads
I stand guilty as charged I am afraid.
I would like to help out but if you guys want to push this forward quickly it might be better if you did pick up those rather loose threads. I'll mail you both what I have so far.

The gate guards of Minas Tirith report seeing a fat, bearded gentleman holding an axe aloft racing out of the city atop a large, horse driven cart.
The man is recorded as shouting “Don’t start without me, I’m off to the Shire for the ale and food!”
Latest whereabouts of the man are unknown.
OOC I had been hoping to try and do the following in character in the game but it has not been possible and I don’t want to delay it too much. So the following is for Nord Ashald, please take it that the information has been given to you first hand in character directly by Rofan, leader of the S & S.
"Nord, I came across one of your knights by the name of Idril in Forchol. I had a lengthy conversation with her regarding various things but all essentially focusing on why an individual would follow a chosen path, how far they would and should go to protect an innocent and such.
The lass is highly strung and harbours a desire to destroy to keep the peace through use of force bordering on madness. So much so that when I suggested she was hiding from herself and choosing to vent her anger out on others she took that as her being called a coward and chose to resolve the situation by force. Luckily after the first blow I was able to side step most of her attacks and in her anger she managed to knock herself out by crashing in to an ice wall. I am telling you this because you have in you’re midst a potentially very destructive individual who could just as easily turn on an ally or even a fellow Knight as she would an enemy. You might do well keep a very close eye on that one indeed. As for myself I will be most hesitant to participate in any joint actions if Idril is present and until such time as I am assured of her self control and discipline the S&S will not be liaising with the Knights through her, instead we will solely rely on our own contact Murky Barrows. All members of the S&S will be instructed to give your squire a wide berth and deal with her with extreme caution.”
OOC Ofcourse this is Rofan's side of the story, Idril may or may not agree with it.
S&S member delivers the following letter to Rofan:
"Rofan, let me apologize for my squire's actions and express my regret for the events that
took place in Forochel. I contacted her as soon as you told me of the events and had a
long talk with her. There is no excuse for her behaviour, but I can now understand -
mind you, not accept - her actions. As for what caused her to act the way she did is a
private matter to her, and I'd rather not put it in writing. I ask you to trust my judgement,
but if you insist on knowing more I will talk with you.
In my opinion, she is getting better, and to further help her recovery I took her to Rivendell.
The elves will take care of her, and help her to heal, both her body and her spirit. She is to
remain there for a few weeks, and I'll check on her recovery each week. I will keep you informed
of her situation.
I hope this incident has not damaged the good relations of knights of Gondor and S&S.
Respectfully yours,
Sir Nord Ashald"
“Sir Ashald,
Thank you for you’re prompt response in regard to this matter. I am glad you have taken immediate action and that you’re squire is now in good hands for aid with whatever troubles her.
As for damage to the relations of the Knights and S&S, that was never an issue as it was clear that the individual was acting at her own behest and contrary to the conduct of the Knights.
I consider the matter closed to the satisfaction of all parties.
Rofan of the S&S”
OOC allthough in the letter Rofan states the matter closed, his instruction to all S&S members is continued extreme caution in dealings with Idril.
A Rohirrim ranger arrives in Minas Tirith with a message for Captain Argon.
Captain Argon,
In the name of King Theoden I ask your attendance for a council to discuss the matters of the Uruk potion and incident involving the dragons blood. We have reason to believe that the dragons blood at least, may be in the Wold and would like it destroyed before those behind its acquisition put it to whatever evil use they have in mind. Our alchemists have also found some of the substance employed in the Uruk potion you left in my care but one component eludes them to its nature. We are also requesting attendance from the elves and hope that they will have answers for which we do not.
You may bring to attendance or send in your name any whom you trust and whose council you would except.

A member of the S&S arrives in Edoras with a message for Captain Argon to the following effect. (http://forums.wireplay.co.uk/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=71&day=2006-3-8&c=3)
A letter is delivered to Captain Balros:
---
Captain Balros, after you left the meeting Lauralea seemed to be in anguish over the decision to have the advisor killed. I agreed to convey her request that he should be spared.
In the meeting my first thought was to have the advisor killed, but properly persuaded we might get valuable information from him. I can well understand your desire to see him dead, but after all he might be more valuable to us alive.
I ask you to inform her of your decision on the matter as soon as possible.
Sir Nord Ashlad.
---
Below is a note written in untrained script, for the attention of Captain Argon Balros.
My Liege,
I have recently come across some information which I think best you should be made aware of. I was recently involved in routing out orcs and hillmen on behalf of the Lossoth. One of my companions on this task was a Gondorian by the name of Herek.
Herek was a little startled to see me with full Knights garb in Tharbad and informed me that the reason for this was that he had overheard a conspiracy against the Knights in Tharbad. He spoke of a fellow with a patch over his eye who seemed to be discussing with another the abduction or such of a lady in Rivendell and the conversation revolved much around the Knights. Herek was unable to give me further details but I hope even this small amount of information is sufficient for you to make use of.
Your humble squire,
Ribas Shibar.
A theft has taken place in Minas Tirith, the nature of the theft and circumstances surrounding it suggests grave danger for the Kingdom. Knights and allies are called forth to investigate the theft, retrieve that which was stolen and unmask the power behind the act.
OOC, more details here. (http://forums.wireplay.co.uk/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=123&day=2006-8-12&c=3)
A letter is delivered to king Theoden:
---
King Theoden,
some of those whom you have come to know and who have helped your kingdom in
the past have decided - partly to their age - to confine their duties to Minas Tirith.
Those two are captain Balros and sir Althan. As you well know, captain Balros has been
the leader of the knights of Gondor. Now that both he and sir Althan have taken up
senior commander's duties, captain Balros felt that a younger knight should take up
the captaincy. He has seen fit to promote me to captain and place me as the new
leader of the knights.
I hope this change will not affect the good relations between Rohan and Gondor. I
shall try to visit Edoras as soon as my new duties permit.
Respectfully,
captain Ashald.
(signed) Nord Ashald.

Following information is known in Minas Tirith:
- Argon Balros and Gregoire Althan have taken up senior commander posts
- Nord Ashald has been appointed the new captain of the knights

Lord Elrond is aware of the change; he'll tell to anyone he thinks it is necessary.

The following letter is delivered to Sir Nord Ashald, Captain of the Knights of Gondor
Captain Ashald,
It has come to my attention that Argon Balros has recently stepped down as a captain of Gondor, taking up more vigorous duties as a Commanding General to Steward Denethor II. In his stead, you have taken up the steadfast position as Captain of the loyal and disciplined Knights of Gondor. My friend, I wish to congradulate you! Though we are all saddened by Argon's loss, we must also congradulate him on his promotion. Gondor is ever in-need of loyal, steadfast officers. It is now two richer.
I confess, I was somewhat shocked that Sir Gregoire Althan, Argon's right-hand man was not placed in his stead, it does not truly surprise me. Though he is a good soldier and an excellent fighter, his responsibilities to higher officers would deter him from such a responsible position as Captain of the Knights of Gondor. It seems perfectly fit then for you Nord, to be put in that position. While I look back on the "Battle of the Bridge," when we and a few score soldiers took back the southern bridge leading to Harad, I witnessed your excellent skills in command and at the same time staying calm. It is a talent and courage that we are all jealous of. If all were as brave and intelligent as yourself, there would be too many next choices for a new captain! Therefore, once again I wish to congradulate you old friend. Watching you mold from a stick-wielding Troll hunter to a blade-wielding Knight captain has made me feel pride in knowing you. I wish you all the best in serving Gondor, protecting her from its enemies and serving your duty well.
As to your Knights: They are loyal soldiers, and though they remain in few, are well-enough equipped and trained to defeat Gondor's enemies. Serve them well, as they serve you. Such men are deserving of such strong loyalties. May they remain as they are now, for the better of all of Arda. If you are ever in-need of new recruits, seek out those in Tharbad. There are many young, talented men in that city who would wish to take up duties alongside Knights such as your own.
Take care Nord, mellon. I look forward to seeing you soon sometime, whether it be over a glass of the oldest Noldorin wine or a fighting alongside once again. Yavanna bless you and keep you and all of your knights well in the days to come.
Galu am ammen,
Valen De'Vir
*all knights presently in Minas Tirith are called to a meeting by captain Ashald*
"As you may know, we have a visitor in the hall, a messanger from Rivendell.
Her name is Validriel. She will be travelling back to north shortly, and two knights
are required to escort her to Rivendell. There will be a few elves escorting her as well.
I cannot stress enough how important it is that her trip back to Rivendell will be
swift and safe."

My lord,
I have returned from my sojourn in the West.
I have learned much in herb lore and the diseases of the body.
I look forward to being able to use these skills for the good of the Knights, assuming that my name yet remains on the rolls.
For now I remain in the Prancing Pony in Bree, and look forward to that time that I feel worthy to return to Gondor.

" It is my regret to inform you that Sir Ashald, the captain of the knights of Gondor is unavailable to answer to your letter at this time. Nord will be around next sunday afternoon/evening.
The following is known to Gaerfast, Tyrin, Ivan and Nord:
---
Ivan has approached Sir Nord and asked if he would be accepted as a member of the
knights. Ivan was not immediatly accepted, but not totally rejected either. There were
a few things in Ivan's past actions that seemed worrysome to Sir Nord. They will meet
again in six months time, and if what Sir Nord hears of Ivan's conduct is good Ivan will
be accpeted as a member. However, if there is single thing that is not good, Ivan
will not be accepted to the knights.
---
This is part Ivan does not know:
---
All knights were requested to watch and see how Ivan acts, and also ask from allies and
friends of the knights about Ivan.
---
This is known to Gaerfast, Tyrin and Nord:
---
Gaerfast and Tyrin were ordered to patrol in the north, looking - discreetly - for any
clues of "white hand", a symbol that the knights and elves have seen on various
occasions.
Tyrin patrols the areas near Rivendell and Gaerfast will concentrate on the southern
part of Misty Mountains. He was also ordered to visit Tharbad every now and then.
As for visiting Tharbad, all knights have been advised to visit Tharbad in disguise, and
not to identify themselves as knights. Tyrin and Gaerfast are to relay this information
to all knights they should meet.

-err, methinks not, anything else?
-hmmmm.............We have this, "Ye perfect and Correct Way of using Sworde", very popular amongst the young nobility of City.
-Yes, i have read it, it emphasises too much high guard, anything else?
-.................................We have "Seven Sords of Ithlien", quite popular at its time, if bit ribald a novel.

Captain Ashald,
I hope you are well.
I have some light to shed in these dark times. In a recent visit to The Tomb of Kings to lift a curse laid apon the guardians their i spoke to a sprit going by the name of Elendil the Tall. The name is unfamilure to me however i will look into our archives too see what i can find.
What "Elendil" told me brings great hope and dread somewhat. He or She?.....said the guardians of the city will still come to its aid in a time of need.
Elendil went on to say "Not all that was lost, shall remain broken. Not all that was broken, shall remain lost." Of this i am unsure what is meant.
"Times ahead may be dark, but keep the light shining and the way shall become clear."
But then dread filled my heart......"Draw allies from where you can, a time of great darkenss lies in the balance of a small childs hands."
That is all that was said before Elendil disappered. The curse was lifted though we were informed that it will return in time.
For the Glory of Gondor, Sir Berethor
*Nord reads the report and thinks for a good while*
"A bit cryptic to me, but if Sir Berethor is looking up references to Elendil fine, best wait for his findings"

After his interview Talestar answered a call of the king of Rohan to rescue a weapon from the deeps hall of Moria. A well made party made the job easier and as a gift the king give s spear.
Talestar Toriel returnes to the Knights hall and offer the weapon as gift to the Brotherhood.

My only Knight is too low for that quest - by a long way. However I do have characters of a more appropriate level if more company is wanted.

I recall that Grunhir was pretty fun to RP with his working class deference to Capn' Balros when he was initiated into the Knights.
(In a robust voice not disimilar to Winsor Davies in It Aint Half Hot Mum)
"Yus sah, Capn' sah! Never lerrit b'said sah tha' Grunhir, son o' Frun, don't know his place sah. An honour I sez sah! An honour and true t' serve ye and yer fine lads sah! And moved I is sah, te be made even th'umblest rank in this most ancient and noble order at my time of life sah! Me old da' be right proud iffen he werent but dead sah!"
(Then in a conspiratorial whisper)
"Only I has te ask that ye dont tell me missus. She'd skin be alive if she knew i was galavantin' about the place opressin' the forces of evil when I has her an' the bairns te provide fer an' a smithy te run an' all that..."
Like Loriens character, Grunhir, is very low level.
A little trip for materials sounds good.
As for non-knights, I would assume there'll be room for friends and allies of the knights as well.
// what would be a good time for the trip - or part of it - next weekend?

Unfortunately next weekend I'm away until sun evening, i was hoping to have a session on a weekday evening and tbh i can do the armour quest anytime, a reunion/gathering would be much more fun and levels would not be a problem.
so its either sun night or a week night for me :)
set up a time and date, im avaliable most of the time. :)
Likewise, most times good for me.
Word passes among knights and they are - as they travel - to inform allies of
Knights of Gondor that there is a new member among knights: initiate Callum.
Captain Ashald.
* a letter is sent to the commander of the Knights *
Sir Nord Ashald.
I am sad to inform you that I wish to cancel my application for possible joining to the honorable Knights.
I have had some time to think of this and I am starting to feel that I am not worthy or adequate to be a member of your glorious organization. I feel I am not ready or never will be to face the challenges the Knights have and my only place is in the City Watch of Tharbad. As you might have found out, I have many problems with my view of the world. And my joining to the Knights would simply just put chaos into the code.
Needless to say, that I will try not to say a word about these past events with the Knights to my superiors at Tharbad and I would very much appreciate it also from you that you wouldn't use any possible information obtained from me during your interviews against the city of Tharbad.
I simply cannot leave my loyalty for Tharbad. And I also feel I am not ready for this.
I sincerely apologize. I am also dissapointed to the fact that I cannot present this letter to you myself but I have to leave Minas Tirith quickly and return to my post at Tharbad.
As a token of goodwill and apology, I present with this letter a pouch containing 3000 gold pieces from my belongings for your organization to use.
Farewell..
Ashal Waynn.
Tharbad City Watch - member.
*A note reaches all members of the Knight's of Gondor*
---
To any member of the Knights of Gondor,
I hope this letter finds you in good health.
You are to return to Minas Tirith immediatly and stay in the Knights' Hall until further notice.
Captain Ashald.

It seems i will be occupied in Osgiliath for some days at the least. The Orcs are making another push but i doubt it is nothing i cant handle. Regarding the information given to us by Lance react as you see fit, i trust in your judgement. You can inform me of what i missed when i return.
For the Glory of Gondor i ride, farewell untill we meet again.

Knights Captain Berethor,
I want to thank you for your hospitality, and repeat my congratulations regarding your promotion, and that of your new knights. I regret the urgency that called you away, but alas, I must be making haste back to the North as well.
The following is to just highlight the things I reported after the fine feast your staff provided. If you have any questions, contact myself or Captain Bence.

Brother knights,
The new uniforms are ready to be used now. As before one is expected to wear one on official errands and so. Discretion dictates when to show our colours, so one is to use his judgement. Shield is free to choose after ones preference, like the gloves or gauntlets. After we have tried them on, we will see if any has preference of any particular part to be his own design. For now, you will be handed new gear at first opportunity.

My dearest friend,
I hope you are well. The desire for the road has once more overcome in me what my fellow hobbits would say is good sense. Having left the Shire now for some 2 months, I now write to you from Forchol. Here, I have come upon some strangeness which I think the Knights of Gondor should be aware of, even though the happenings are far from them. I hope you can forward this to who ever now commands those noble men and women.
In Forchol and the surrounding lands at least, it seems that the servants of ancient evil are at loose. I speak of werewolves, those that the elves call gaurhoth, and the thought of them and what I have read of them fills me with dread. I believe it important that the Knights are aware of this even if it is in a distant land; especially so because one of my companions by name of Toman mentioned to me that the library of the White City holds words which speak also of Sauron as having dealings with werewolves. If the city holds such lore then its guardians may be well placed to offer assistance to the Lossoth, perhaps not in arms but in advice. I don’t know your current standing in the Knights but hope you are at least able to convey this message.
Lastly, it has been too long since we travelled and indeed adventured together and I look forward to the day when we again travel together as we discussed not too long ago in Bree.
Ever your friend,
Frain Hairylobes.

Me dear friend Frain,
It be good to hear from ye lad! Me belly is rumbling just by reading ye words!
Captain Berethor leads the knights these days after Ashald hung up his spurs, so to speak. I have passed on ye message to him, as I have little involvement with the Knights these days. After years of trying to get recruits to use a proper weapon I’ve given up!
Ye say there be werewolves in Forochel? Bloody hell! I just remember it being so cold me beard went solid and me bits almost froze off! As me Ma used to say “Greg boy, if ye caught with ye tackle out in a cold wind and it drops off, don’t come crying to me”. I was four at the time mind, but I think the principle remains.
After all me years travelling I’ve learnt one thing lad – There’s nothing that cannot be solved with a bloody big axe! It may take some time for the Knights to get sorted, but there’s nowt stopping me coming over. I’ll be on the first boat that sails from Tharbad.
Get ye biggest cooking pot out lad and start on the stew, I’m coming to help ye!
Sir Gregoire (Greg to me mates, eh lad?)
Ps – Best make it a spicy stew to ward off the cold.
Pps – Is it werewolves that don’t like garlic? Don’t worry, I’ll bring some anyway.

Due to the invisible nature of the Knights at present I have decided to run some events for them if the interest and people are there. I have always thought the Knights were one of the sexier guilds and do not wish to see them vanish. Let me know who is still around and if and when you could make events.
Also I am inviting any Knights to attend the Dunedain event on Sunday as a show of friendship between Gondor and Rohan.
I never have gone away :)

hi its been a while since i popped by, but i was round on my old computer at my parents for christmas and found this from when i first founded the knights, so thought i'd post it
A Knights Conduct
TACTICS
A Knight moves with a dignified and ordered step. The Knights of Gondor are not a mindless rabble. That is the essence of Discipline. When the enemy is in sight or the weak and/or defenceless are in peril most Dire, then and and only then we charge into the fray.
Before a battle a Knight assesses the ground to which he is about to fight upon and plans the battle in his head utilising the terrain to his advantage and considering the role his companions will play in the upcoming battle.
A Knights actions in battle are coordinated with his companions.
OOC CLARIFICATION
(using terrain as an advantage is making monsters go round obstacles so he can fire an extra arrow at it not exploiting game mechanics and getting the moster stuck so you can fire all your arrows at it)
In this order Discipline, Honour and Loyalty are held in the highest reguard, all men are free to join the order if they can meet these three Principles.
Discipline: A Knight must keep in formation and follow orders.
Honour: A Knight by his actions must bring honour to the order and to Gondor.
Loyalty: A Knight must be loyal to the order and to Gondor.
i may soon reinstall nwn and pop by, been wanting too for a while but the install for nwn is a pain these days, got a couple of ideas for a few storylines on their return.
so i may see you soon
take care
Good reminder, the old charter of the order.
You would be wellcome as silent as the Hall has been of late.
Ivan Balros has returned from his long errand, and is reinstated as a brother-knight. His report of happenings in far places has been delivered to lord Faramir and me. He is to assume for time being lead of falconeers and foresters, untill this can be made permament by Knight-Captain and majority of brothers. Fellow knights are encouraged to wellcome a returnee brother.
By my hand in White City
Gaerfast, First Knight, acting commander
Private report to Knight-Captain Berethor.
The things Sir Ivan had to tell speak of dire happenings in world, a summary follows here.
I recommend due to his experience in working in undercover and our need for accurate information to appoint him as spymaster. He is a man of strong arm, but my perception is he would be very competent in arranging and leading any covert activity we have.
*follows a brief summary of Ivans report*
In hope this finds you with haste,

Alright, there have been some changes. Henceforth I will be taking over the Knights both IC and OOC. One last roll call, I wish to encourage everyone to think seriously before they respond. If you will not be an active knight, if you will not been seen on the server with some degree of regularity I would ask you to reconsider your membership. The trouble the knights have always suffered is apathy. Since Argon has left, the Knights have only been seen if there is an event, that defeats the purpose of being a Knight in my opinion.
It is my goal to make the Knights the number one guild on this server. My style will be different, and some things will change starting with a new knightly code. I intend to run events but what is more important is to have members that have a passion for the Knighthood, that wish to be a symbol of hope in Arda, that will RP for the sake of RP and get involved. Think about it very seriously and let me know.
To non members, soon we will be recruiting. We will want Gondorians exclusively though we may make an exception for a hobbit cook. Those that that think the Knights might be for them are encouraged to make a Gondorian and develop a reputation for courage, valor and chivalry. We will be open to most classes but personality will be most important, slimey rogues, warriors that live only to kill and loot need not apply. Gearfast will remain first knight and will be my right hand (aka vulpex). Feel free to contact him or myself about your interest or ideas. More to come in the days ahead. Brace yourselves forces of evil, your easy ride is over.
Sauron
Time is of essence as it has been of late, but i hear and obey.

Hey folks. Sorry i have not been around at all or on earlier to inform you of my situation. My life has changed dramatically over the last 6 months, i spend very little time in my room let alone on the computer these days. I do not foresee this changing. Greetings Captain Tanamir,
Since I have of late been travelling vastly about the face of Arda, I have seen and heard much the Knighthood might wish to have knowledge of and some of which I will now pass along.
I was of late on an mission lead by a Dunedain named Wanderer to track a man suspected of being responsible for the unleashing of the monsters on Tharbad that came out of the Tower of the Silverswords.
We caught him and apprehended him alive and he spoke of a woman named Ilyanna who gave him a wand promising some fools fullfilment of hopes, but that really opened a portal that allowed monsters loose into the Tower, and then the city itself.
We returned the wand to the city, and watched to be sure the portal was closed, though the man himself is being held in Rivendell by the elves hoping he will produce more information on the woman Ilyanna. They spoke of her sister Moya.
I was very disturbed that they would not return him to Tharbad to stand trial for his crimes, though the other man involved made some deal with the mayor, heard from his own mouth, that allowed him to remain free from any punishment for his part in the portal opening.
I will be available to answer any questions you may have about this incident.
Your humble servant, Roan Avon Gore.
