View Full Version : Middle Earth Book exploit

If you get the books from the starting OOC area and bring them to a merchant, they sell for 1 GP a piece. That's a quick way to make cash, so I thought I'd expose the problem here.
I found out when browsing through a merchant's inventory last night (the elf tailor in Bree) and saw some of the Middle Earth books of the starting area selling for 1 GP each. I was carrying 2 of them and they sold for 1 GP as well. So I sold them and bought them back.
Now, if that merchant doesn't carry these books for sale, I'm afraid someone else has been exploiting this bug.
It would certainly give a new player a small advantage, although a very extreme method to take :P
This possibility did cross my mind when I made this area (It was the first utt2 area!) But it was one of those times when I put it down to the common sense and good will of the players not to mess about with the books and leave them there as reference.
If it was a common exploit, I'd do something about it. This is the first time the issue has been brought up so im reluctant to do anything about it. Im quite happy to leave the books there for the time being.
Players will also be aware that hoarding these books and selling them off will not please the DM's :P

Yeah, probably an easy way to flag a powergamer if you see a ton of books suddenly appearing on the merchants' inventories.
Another thing to bear in mind with the books, is that they are a very very common loot drop. I know some people don't pick them up, but I pick up everything, so I'll quite often be carrying 10+ books, which I will sell for 1g each when I get back to a town.
Although if I ever manage to get myself a house with a persistant bookshelf, one of my character may set himself the aim of having a full library of books himself.
A persistent bookshelf, now that sounds like a nice idea..
*looks to Aule to add it to his long list of things to do* ;)
*grumbles profusely* It's already on the list, item number 142. :P
(Persistent storage for player-owned houses is actually quite urgent, and it won't make much of a difference if we make the storage as bookshelves or chests -- I imagine players will be able to choose.)
a bit off topic but related to books...
some books of the valar 8i cant remember which ones) are missed (

some books of the valar 8i cant remember which ones) are missed (i know of elrond's library and the hall of waitings)
i found out when yushmar wanted to take every book of the valar (relted to his story - aule knows best)
well i just dont know if they are missed or simply not in
If books on Manwe and Este were missing it may have been that I had taken them off the shelf in the Halls of Waiting to use as props for either of my two devout types.
1st: sorry for tat strange double-posting
no they arent there.. i tried it several times and manwe certainly is there.. i think either they arent there because the builders forgot to put them into the bookshelf or because they have not been created yet.
i cant remember exactly which ones were missed but i only found 10 or 11 or 12 including melkor
the most famous are definatly there
Just had a look myself.
I could find the following Valar books:
Aule, Orome, Tulkas, Ulmo, Mandos, Manwe, Morgoth, Vaire, Varda and Yavanna.
By my count this means the following books are missing:
Nienna, Vana, Nessa, Lorien and Este.
