Brought from the Quiet Server thread to keep that on topic.

I also wonder if some of the issues around Bree might be causing some players to lose heart? (for new players especially, Bree is now missing a couple of beginner quests, and the slow load/sometimes laggy first area you come to might be putting people off? - no criticism of the excellent work on the new look Bree, but it does have a few issues that could be ironed out. In some ways I prefer the old one. Eye candy is nice but playability is more important, imho)

The old Bree is gone. Im very dissapointed 2 weeks solid work has gone this way. Instead I will spend my energy on more worthwhile things.

I'm sorry you took my comment this way Kev, I did not mean to sound negative or to criticise the hard work you've put in. I was just mentioning something that came to my mind and thinking particularly of new players (or low level chars where Bree is still important). What I meant was:

1) Some players have noticed lag. I've seen a bit of of the "warping" about and rewalking the same path but nothing I can't cope with. The load times are an annoyance, especially if in a party - I have to wait around 30 seconds to load Bree and this could really get in the way of the flow of conversation/pace of RP. It's particularly annoying (for me anyway) when going in and out of shops etc. to have to wait all that time each time (new players will probably notice this more as they will be exploring these much more while I tend to only go in if a shop in Bree if I have to now).
2) Most importantly there are still several beginner quests that are "broken"/missing with the new Bree - the Harp quest (Where's the Pony Stables?), Podo's familiar quest (no cave - although I met a new char looking for the "wizard's tower" or something so maybe the quest has changed? but he couldn't find that either), and the Greyflood message post.
3) The road leading east from Bree stops halfway up the hill with a bit of a trek to find the dirt track that leads to the Great East Road. Same with the Chetwood. This is not very intuitive imo. It's okay if you know to look for them, but what if you are new? Would you know you had to wander up hill and down dale to find a couple of extra exits?
4) Harry's new post is much better I must say, although I do kind of miss his friendly face outside the Pony/Alegard's shop (the main "meeting place" in old Bree).

Yes the new Bree looks stunning, but these are the "issues" that I mentioned. Okay I admit not a major factor in the quietness of the server so probably out of place on that thread, but I do think they needed to be said.

I just tried that extracting the hak thing and noticed no difference at all (sadly).

This will be looked into as soon as possible. Expect to see a version of Bree that's easier on lower-end machines within the next few days.

*moved from the quiet server thread*

Kev remade bree to see what could be achieved with the new tileset. He had been looking at the old bree for a very long time and obviously fancied a change of scenery. liking the end result he used it.

I think it is certainly better looking and has the feel of a busy and well populated decent sized town.

With regards to the potential lag issues that bree causes. I intend to address these as soon as i can. I dont think that a lot needs to be done to fix them. possibly making more than one area out of it. Bree villiage as one and bree hill as another is one solution i am considering. I intend to keep it looking and feeling the same as Kev wanted it to. Im just trying to ease the old burden of performance issue that arises with such a detailed tileset. Consider how detailed some of the shire areas are, and they still run well enough because i kept them smallish. A little simplification ought to do it. :)

I must admit, I thought about splitting Bree as a solution myself. That sounds like the perfect solution. Each area will be about consistent with every other area in size then.

i have to say:
BREE IS ABSOLUTELY SPECTACULAR, IT'S GREAT!

thanks for providing us this new starting area!
after watching the same area about a year it feels so good to see such an nice town (is this really NWN?) and gives us a hint how other old and new areas could look like in future!

well THANKS KEV...excellent work!!

ok i had some lag problems too - with my low-end machine stolen from the paleolithicum) but first it wasnt that bad (hey this is a pretty nice town! why rushing through it.. calm down and watch it) and second i am sure it can be sorted (hope it wont cost too much time)

thank you

maybe we should rant a bit at the hak forums.. two times they fixed a problem after a was complaining :P
the green ground mixed with the brown one is the only disadvantage..would be cool if the hak creator would fix it :)

Ah, that's more like it. Kept all of the essence of Kev's lovely new Bree but fixed the problems (still didn't notice the message post, but just had a quick run around, and no idea obout the podo quest as too high to take it). The load time has been cut in half! The road links are perfect.

It did still appear a little jumpy as I walked around but nothing I haven't had in other areas from time to time, and I never really had any major lag in Bree before (only the load time).

Well done, thanks.

There appears to be no kindling (or firewood) for sale in Bree any more (now Hammerson(?) is no longer there). (Oh and Podo's familiar still gives the location of the original cave (on a hill in the centre of Bree, but no biggie.)

I expect that mr hammerson is away on business. he may soon return

Here's another one that I have no idea is a server thing or some other anomaly, but it happened in Bree and I said I would post it.

Anarial, Larrissa and Hrolf were in Bree. To Anarial it was raining, but to the other two of us it was not.

To me that sounds like graphics settings issues, rather than anything else - it may be worth the three of you camparing your settings - I could be wrong though - I usually am ;)

Steve-Law

Well it didn't seem to happen anywhere else. Once we left Bree we saw the same conditions as far as I know (when we left Tharbad it was raining, someone commented and there was no disagreement).

(Not saying it wasn't something like that, just seemed odd.)

DM_Olórin

The area has a percentage chance to be raining, having a storm, snowing etc. Once set that is a constant for that area. its not possible to make it rain on one character and not another steve :)

at least i dont think so...

I didn't think it was, was just wierd then.

Has anyone tried to close Bree's Southern gate?

[Large Wooden Door] You feel disoriented momentarily as your soul returns to it's mortal shell.

eek!

Steve-Law

Actually it also does it on the West gate (to the Shire) except you can't open that one!

Thats quite frightening, i'll have it sorted soon.

Cheers. (It was quite scary, yeah, in several senses!)
