I kind of posted about this before, but I wanted more clarification on it. I imagine this has already been discussed, but - once again - I couldn't find any other threads on the topic through the forum search feature. (Does that thing even work?)

Part of Rhyll's schtick is a wanderlust and a desire to experience the world. Thinking about this, I started envisioning in my head travelling from the Shire/Bree to other places, like Rohan and Minas Tirith and Rivendell. Quick on the heels of that thought was a concern that I would have to enter the game at Bree each time I logged on to the server and retrace a lot of my steps during each sitting.

That doesn't sound like fun, so I was wondering what the options were for entering the world once a character has been around a bit. I have seen references to other starting locations, so I am imagining that, somehow, you are able to change the options of where to enter the game at the second light portal in the starting rooms. It would be good to know how that is done in-game. ;)

Also, is there any way to be able to enter the game where you last left it. I can imagine instances with Rhyll that I will be somewhere out in the wild when I have to log off and it would be nice to be able to log back in to the same location and not have to work my way back to that location from somewhere else. I imagine this happens frequently with DM'd quests as well - that someone has to leave in the middle of something - so how do they get back to where the quest is when they log back in?

Thanks.

As you progress up levels, your number of starting places increases. As for starting where you left, that will occur as long as there is not a reset of the server inbetween.

Ah, but then that's the rub isn't it? The server resets at least once a week, so, eventually, there will come a point where I will be caught out in the wild when the server resets and I will have to retrace my steps to wherever I was. The issue obviously doesn't affect enough people to make it worthy of reconsidering, so I'm certainly not advocating that the system be changed or anything. I just want to make sure I know what is coming and don't get surprised by it. ;)

Has anybody suggested before having a small number of places around the world where a character could have his/her starting place set to instead of being limited to the predefined entry points? Other servers allow this at any inn, which makes in-game sense to me. Is this something that is already set in stone or is it still open to debate?

The server resets at least once a day, and I think I read somewhere that it now generally resets twice a day.

The main thing about this is that as you travel further from Bree, the monsters get harder. So basically, by a certain point you won't be able to get any further without dying. This kind of "pens" characters into certain areas and as you level the next "hardest" level is opened to you - i.e. the area it is judged you will have a modicum of survival opportunity just leaving the city gates...

It is for example, very easy for a brand new character to walk from the Shire, to Tharbad in one session between resets. However, once they try to leave Tharbad by any other exit, their life expectancy vanishes. What's the point of restarting at Tharbad if you can't get any further and would only have to retrace your steps from the day before?

Another thing to bear in mind is that what might take minutes or hours to travel in game might actually represent days, weeks or even months of travel in character. Factor in the time between playing and your character could have been away for a long time, and then come home for a bit before setting out again, perhaps in a nother direction...

Actually, a good- or neutral-aligned character can get pretty much anywhere on the server without any trouble as long as he does not enter knowingly hostile cities. Yes, you can walk all the way up to Minas Tirith (or even the Black Gates of Mordor) as a lvl1 human. This is as long as you stick to well-known roads and stay away from nasty places such as mountains, of course ;) The only area not otherwise accessible is Esgaroth, and even the spiders in Mirkwood should not be any problem for a party of 2-3 lvl1's (and still manageable, though risky, for a lone lvl1).

Heh. Depends on the character. Rufus was killed by those spiders as a level 6 or something
